Next stop on our summer of Great British Golf is the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf & Spa. Located in picturesque Scottish Borders countryside, this superb 4* hotel is one of our most popular golf break destinations in the southern part of the ‘Home of Golf’.

Speaking of ‘golf’, the Macdonald Cardrona boasts one of the finest challenges of golf in the region. Designed by former Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, the par-72 parkland and woodland layout boasts large undulating greens and a distance which stretches to over 7,000 yards from the back tees.

Macdonald Cardrona

The championship course was designed by the world-renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas, who managed to create a test of golf which is challenging for the expert golfer, but also remains enjoyable for the higher handicap player.

Opening in 2001, the course has already quickly matured in rank and status; hosting the 2004 and 2007 Euro Pro Tour and the 2007 European Challenge Tour, returning once again in 2008. Its reputation as one of Scotland’s best tracks has developed over recent years, so much so that golfers travel from all over the world to take on this beautiful Scottish Borders golf course.

There are a number of fine holes, particularly those on the front-nine, which follow the meanderings of the river. However, there are two that stand out the most – the 6th and 7th. The 6th is a terrific driving hole – one where you’ll need to be slightly daring in order to avoid the burn which has made a habit of collecting balls over the years. If you manage to avoid the water, and play a reasonable second shot on this 527-yard par-5, you’ll have a straightforward approach with your third and the opportunity to make a birdie. The 7th, a 402 yard par-4, is, undoubtedly, the signature hole at the Macdonald Cardrona, it requires a spot-on drive to avoid the sand-traps to the left and the forestry on the right. Then you have the tricky approach shot into a raised and well-protected green – a really challenging, but enjoyable, golf hole.

It is a privilege for me to be associated with Macdonald Golf Hotels & Resorts because their excellent golf courses offer enjoyment for serious and social golfers.” – Sandy Lyle

The 99 guestroom hotel at Cardrona opened in 2003, two years after the golf course first opened its fairways to the general public, and it really is the perfect complement to the Dave Thomas designed golf course.

Originally from the Home of Golf, I have been lucky enough to hack my way round some of the finest courses Scotland has to offer. Previous employers include the world famous Gleneagles Hotel - where I once recommended a half pint of local lager to Gary Player.
