Our summer of Great British Golf continues with one of the finest golf destinations in the West Midlands. Hawkstone Park Hotel, Golf & Country Club is nestled amongst some 400 acres of stunning Shropshire countryside, which attracts many visitors thanks to Grade 1 English landscape, the ruins of a medieval castle and the epic cliffs of the Follies. However the main attraction, for golfers at least, is the magnificent golf experience that the area can offer.

With two championship golf courses, as well a 6 hole par-3 course, Hawkstone Park is certainly a destination to be considered for you next golf break. First off is the 18-hole Hawkstone Course, which was designed James Braid in the 1920s and renovated by the Welsh golfing legend Brian Huggett in the 1990s.  It boasts a number of excellent holes including the 12th, which has made great use of the castle’s moat to provide an extra challenge, and the 10th, which is the resort’s signature hole; named ‘The Road hole’ a par-5 which measures 518 yards and hugs the rugged cliff top of the Follies.

Hawkstone Park Hotel, Golf & Country Club boasts not one, not two but three golf courses!

Stretching to 6,487 yards from the back tees, the Hawkstone Course certainly has the length to offer a good test of golf to even the lowest of handicaps while, at the same time, it’s not overpowering for the lesser skilled players thanks to a range of tee boxes to reduce the length down.

Moving on from the Hawkstone Course, the Championship Course is Hawkstone Park’s newest layout – its addition has made this venue one of just a handful in the West Midlands to brag 36 holes of championship golf.

The Hawkstone Course was also the course where a young Sandy Lyle started off his golfing career – so why not follow in his footsteps?

Stretching 6,762 yards, from the 1st tee to the 18th green, it is considerably longer than the Hawkstone Course and certainly has that classic American feel to it – including wide fairways and vast water hazards – which help to create an exciting contrast with the gorgeous and very English surroundings.

On top of the two championship layouts there is the 6 hole Academy Course – especially helpful for beginners but it also provides a brilliant opportunity for better golfers to hone their short game or even to just have a quick game of golf should you be pressed for time. However, the golfing facilities don’t stop there! Hawkstone Park also boasts superb practise facilities, including a 20-bay driving range and a comprehensive short game area with chipping and putting greens.

Room options include the Single, Twin and Double Rooms, as well as two Suites, boasting separate lounge areas, and two Superior Rooms, each containing a lounge area within the room. All rooms are well equipped as standard with direct dial telephone and flatscreen satellite TV, and that’s without mentioning the added bonus of stunning views from a number of the rooms.

Hawkstone Park provides dining options for every occasion. Choose from the casual dining experience in The Terrace Restaurant or if you are celebrating something special, then why not head for a more elegant meal in the top-class Hawkstone Restaurant. Sunday lunches at the Hawkstone are stuff of local legend, and are thoroughly recommended should you be staying at the weekend.

Away from the golf course and hotel, a golf break at Hawkstone Park allows you to explore the 18th century Hawkstone Follies. This magical-land boasts cliffs, caves, woodland, and ancient monuments, meaning that it currently has Grade 1 certification from the English Heritage organisation! Some of our favourite highlights of the site include a vintage wooden structure across a deep gorge known as Swiss Bridge and the Monument which, from its peak, enables you to look across no less than 13 counties. This really helps to put Hawkstone Park firmly on the map for golfers and nature lovers alike.

Golf breaks to the Hawkstone Park Hotel, Golf & Country club start from just £79. For this you’ll be able to sample both of the championship courses at the resort, as well enjoy dinner, bed & breakfast!

Originally from the Home of Golf, I have been lucky enough to hack my way round some of the finest courses Scotland has to offer. Previous employers include the world famous Gleneagles Hotel - where I once recommended a half pint of local lager to Gary Player.
