Stapleford Park Hosts First European Seniors Tour Event

By May 20, 2010No Comments

Stapleford ParkStapleford Park, the luxury Leicestershire golf resort, enjoyed a successful debut as a European Seniors Tour venue with the Handa Seniors Masters from 12-14 May 2010. The resort, whose championship golf course was designed by Donald Steel, has long been championed by Sam Torrance, the 2009 Seniors Tour Order of Merit winner.

Former Ryder Cup captain and European golfing stalwart Torrance is a former club captain at Stapleford Park, and he was among the field of stars assembled to compete for the title in the £400,000 event. Torrance had to settle eventually for a tie for 24th place, as Bill Longmuir steamed home with a final round of 66 to capture the trophy and a cheque for €71,381.

The inaugural event was back by ISPS, the International Sports Promotion Society, and helped to raise awareness and funds for charitable benefactors including the International Blind Golf Association. With strong sponsorship and a well established venue, it is hoped that the Handa Masters at Stapleford Park will become one of the calendar’s main events.

Described by Sam Torrance as ‘one of England’s greatest jewels’, Stapleford Park is located close to Melton Mowbray, with the golf course, hotel and clubhouse lying at the heart of a spectacular 500-acre estate. The grounds were designed by Capability Brown, and the top end hotel and spa complex overlooks the splendid Donald Steel golf course.

Highlights at the hotel include the individual design theme and name of each room, with options like Coca-Cola and Pirelli, and the amazing spa, which is regarded as one of the country’s best.
