Set in over 200 acres of breath-taking parkland in the Vale of York, Aldwark Manor Estate makes a cracking base for a Yorkshire golf break, with a par 70 layout wrapped around a four-star hotel in a 19th century manor house. At 6,187 yards it's not an endless slog, but it asks you to think, especially if you get a bit greedy off the tee.

The course is classic parkland in feel, with mature trees, gentle movement in the ground and enough shaping to keep you interested all the way in. Better players can plot their way round properly, while mid-handicappers should find it playable if they keep it straight and stay patient. If you're after that "switch off for four hours" round, the estate setting does the job nicely.

It's also set up well for groups. With accommodation, bars and food on-site, you can keep the trip simple, roll straight from the 18th to the bar and avoid organising taxis and reservations elsewhere. I'm a sucker for a parkland course where you've got to shape one or two shots, and Aldwark gives you that without feeling gimmicky.

Who is this for?
Golfers and groups who want an easy, self-contained parkland break in Yorkshire with a quality hotel on-site.

Who is it best for?
Societies, corporate days and mixed-ability groups who want a scenic test that doesn't feel brutal from tee to green.

Aldwark Manor Golf Club

The well-conditioned parkland layout makes use of the local landscape, cutting through avenues of towering oaks and beeches, which themselves are a formidable obstacle for those who stray wide of the fairway. The River Ure winds its way gently through the estate and the golf course itself, adding to the natural beauty of the backdrop to this gorgeous layout.

While it may not be long, there is no shortage of intrigue to keep golfers interested at this stunning golf course, not least at the ‘risk/reward' holes, including the 10th, where hitting the green in two demands a quality long shot over water.

There are also excellent practice facilities at Aldwark Manor, allowing golfers to hone their skills or iron out any creases that may arise during a round.

Don't be distracted by the fountain that is the focal point of the lake that guards the green at the 15th, surely the signature hole at Aldwark Manor.

Accommodation at Aldwark Manor Estate

The hotel sits in the original 19th century Manor House, with a newer wing added to bring the total to 60 rooms. From the outside it's got that grand estate look, while inside you'll find the four-star comforts you'd expect for an easy golf weekend. Room options run from standard doubles to deluxe upgrades and suites, so it works whether you're doing a quick overnight after 36 holes or making a longer stay of it.

For golfers, the big win is the layout of the place. You're on one site, so it's simple to get from your room to breakfast, then out to the course, then straight back to the bar without any fuss. That makes it a strong pick for societies and groups who want everything in one place and a relaxed, non-stuffy base between rounds.

Food & Drink

Food and drink is spread across a few different settings. Elements restaurant is the more formal option for an evening meal, with a full menu in a traditional dining room. If you'd rather keep it casual, the Squadron bar covers cocktails and lighter options, while Bunkers is a popular choice after the round, fitted out with four big screens showing Sky and BT Sport. The menu is comfort-first, with toasted sandwiches, pizzas, burgers and familiar mains, and it opens from 8am on weekdays and weekends, handy if you've got an early tee time or fancy a late bite after your round.

Leisure Facilities

The spa and leisure facilities closed on 1 January 2024, with a new luxury spa planned for 2026. Plans include a mezzanine indoor/outdoor infinity pool, outdoor relaxation areas, state-of-the-art treatment rooms, themed relaxation rooms and a thermal suite with Finnish sauna, bio sauna, tepidarium, salt steam room and experience showers. For now, this one is primarily about golf, food and a good post-round pint.

Brett and Tony supported us throughout our visit and catered for all our needs. The rooms and Spa were great quality also. Breakfast was table service and a little slow but worth the wait for the quality of food.

We were 12 golfers staying at this lovely hotel for 2 nights DB&B with 3 rounds of golf. Our rooms were in the Bunker sports bar building and the rooms were newly refurbished and were excellent. Most over looked the 1st Tee box . The bar staff were all very good especially Brett the South African who went far and beyond to help and serve us. He was a pleasure to deal with. I used the Spa for my morning swim including using the sauna and steam room which were excellent. We are all in agreement to visit this hotel again in the near future. Thank you YGT for organising our trip.

Room was amazing. And the food was really good in the bunkers sports bar.

Rooms were very good. Dinner was served in a golfers bar and not the main hotel giving us the impression we were 2nd class citizens and the already limited menu (up to £25) was reduced further as the kitchen had ran out of steaks! Although it was kept open a little longer we were told the bar was closing at 10pm and we had only got there around 7pm after a very slow round of golf. Overall, only a moderate experience.

everything was exceptional, we will be booking again. My only criticism is the cost of drinks, £13 for a glass of wine, or £40 for a bottle.

fantastic

Main issue was that £25 allowance towards dinner did not cover even a main in the main restaurant so ate in the golf bar, where £25 just covered 2 courses but food was limited from a griddle. Quality however was good. Spa facilities yet to be completed.

Some brilliant holes and a good test for all golfers. Bunkers were not best but normal for a hotel course.

Really good course. Had to plot your way around a lot of it and some challenging holes over water. Might just be the time of year but the greens weren’t in the best condition

Lovely course with quite a number of challenging holes especially the 14th which we had to drive over the river to get to fairway. Thoroughly enjoyed playing the course and would certainly return.

Fantastic course. Unfortunately slow play from the of the group ahead lead to a longer round on the first day. But would absolutely go back again.

Sunday 19th was the worst weather in months so it was hard to assess the course which has been remodelled since our last visit about 10 years ago. Very slow first round ( 5 hours) No run on the fairways due to the heavy rain which did not help us, with our average age around 70 and all mid handicaps. Course was surprisingly firm on Monday and as we were out early we were round in just over 3.5 hours. Some long walks from green to tee and we were not sure whether the new layout worked any better. The 15th with a 170 yd carry over a lake was out of reach for most of our party in the poor conditions with the ball not travelling far so a disappointing experience overall.

there were 22 golfers in our society, with a variety of handicaps, our lowest being 5 to highest 54, some holes were tough for the high handicappers, but so many feature holes. High reviews from everyone that played
