0800 043 6644Originally a public house dating back to 1763, The Blazing Donkey opened as a hotel in the 1990’s having converted an attractive stable courtyard to provide 22 superb cosy and very comfortable guest rooms. The rooms are all en-suite with baths and showers and were opened in 1995 by Peter Alliss. The former guest list is like a who’s who in golf with the likes of Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington and Joost Luiten all having used the hotel as their base when playing Royal St. Georges.
Sitting in extensive grounds the property’s attractive main house boasts a superb bar and restaurant facilities along with some chill-out lounge space too. Think inglenooks, flagstone floors and beams for its genuinely and authentically cosy Kentish vibe. In the Winter the open fires crackle away and in Summer an elevated terrace overlooks the beautifully kept gardens where there is plenty of space for a bit of chipping practice! The reception desk even has a chipping mat for the use of guests!
The hotel is only a short drive from Sandwich Bay, home to Royal St. Georges Princes Golf Club and Royal Cinque Ports are very close by making the ‘Donkey a perfect base for golfers looking to test their skills on the Kent coast! This charming Inn truly provides a real tonic off the course and a warmth of welcome and atmosphere hard to find in hotels for golfers. It’s really a hotel in disguise as a top notch pub restaurant and that’s perhaps why its so popular.
Great food, rooms comfortable very pleasant staff. Would stay again for the golf.
Food was great and staff were friendly and professional. But I was woken on our first night at 4amish by a vibrating noise that sounded like a motorbike being run outside my room window. I couldn’t work out what it was and called the hotel who said they would investigate. The noise didn’t stop so that was my first night ruined and me knackered for a round of golf. On the second day I got moved to the room next door when in the afternoon I heard the same noise so asked to be moved again and was put in the main hotel. They told me that workmen had been up in the eaves and they suspected a fan had been left on. I went to settle the bill on the last day wondering if they’d at least suggest a free drink given the misery of my first night but no. I won’t be staying there again.
Great location and super service. Very well looked after by the staff and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend this place for a stay.
