Fifteen miles south of Glasgow above the village of Eaglesham, Bonnyton Golf Club sits on heather-clad moorland with sweeping views across Ben Lomond, the Campsies and the surrounding countryside. Designed by Alister Mackenzie, you'll spot his influence in the way the holes sit on the land and how the bunkers ask you to pick a side.
Tree-lined fairways thread through the moor, with natural burns appearing at exactly the moments you'd rather they didn't. Plateau greens put a premium on distance control and the bunkering is smartly placed, tempting you into the braver line while leaving plenty to do if you bail out. Heather frames the holes beautifully, but it has teeth, so a wayward swing is usually paid for.
You'll find a good mix of hole lengths and directions, which helps when the wind gets up, and there are some terrific vantage points where the landscape really opens out. It's an easy add-on to a Glasgow golf break if you want something with a bit more bite and character than the usual parkland option.

Augusta National designer and world-famous course architect, Dr. Alister Mackenzie oversaw course design of Bonnyton in 1923 whereby he opened the course in an exhibition match with George Duncan, Abe Mitchell, J. H. Kirkwood and multi-Major winner, Walter Hagen.
The course is not overly long in length however accurate tee shots are a must around this tight layout. With fairways designed around the contours of the rolling moorland landscape surrounded by dramatic, rolling, heather-covered moorland the course takes full advantage of mature woodland with the drama of its natural surroundings. Careful design using elevated greens, carefully positioned bunkers and mature tree lined fairways means this is a fair test for the golfer
Visitors playing the course can be sure of a friendly welcome at the Clubhouse. The Bar overlooks the 18th and offers a great choice of high quality food and drinks. Enjoy watching sporting events on the large plasma screen, or relax on the Sun Lounge patio. Meanwhile, the restaurant offers a range of traditional and modern fare, from simple snacks to a Sunday Carvery.
