Crowborough Beacon Golf Club is one of the South East's best heathland golf experiences. With Dr Alister MacKenzie and Harry Colt both linked to the design, it has proper pedigree too.
Perched up on the Sussex Weald, it's the views that hit you first, then the golf asks a few questions. Expect open, springy heathland turf, heather and gorse framing the holes and plenty of natural movement underfoot. When the breeze gets up (and it often does on high ground), you'll need to pick smart targets and keep it in play because the fairways can run and the misses are rarely friendly.
Bernard Darwin put it best: "The first thing that will strike the golfer who comes fresh to Crowborough is the wonderful view. I do not suppose there is a wider or more beautiful one in all England." The quote still rings true today and the greens are no pushovers either, with plenty of subtle contours that make you earn your up-and-downs.
If you're putting together a South East golf break, Crowborough Beacon is an easy one to include for a memorable, old-school heathland test.
