Dyke Golf Club

The Dyke Golf Club is just four miles from the centre of Brighton, sitting high on the South Downs around 200 metres above sea level. It's a classic downland course, but on a dry day it can feel surprisingly linksy underfoot, with firm turf, quick greens and a breeze that makes you think twice over club selection.

Getting here is easy from the A23 and A27, so it's a straightforward add-on to a Brighton break or a Sussex golf itinerary. Once you're on the course, elevation does a lot of the heavy lifting, both in the views and in the way holes play, and the wind is a genuine factor on the more exposed stretches.

Fairways are generally inviting off the tee, but approaches and recovery shots demand a bit of imagination when the ground is running. The putting surfaces tend to be true and on the quicker side, so it pays to keep the ball below the hole and leave yourself uphill looks where you can.

If you enjoy traditional golf on open downland with plenty of air around you and very little in the way of trees to bail you out, The Dyke is a strong shout, especially in summer when conditions get fast and fun.
