If you are planning a Galway golf break and want a course with real championship bite, Golf at The Hawthorn deserves a close look. Set on Renville Point above Galway Bay, the layout pairs big coastal views with the kind of wind-affected test that makes you think your way round every hole. Christy O'Connor Jnr. designed the course and regarded it as the jewel in his crown, which tells you plenty before you even peg it up.
Off the course, the resort has the all-on-site convenience that most groups look for. Luxury accommodation, a strong dining line-up across seven venues, a full destination spa and both indoor and outdoor pools mean there is no shortage of ways to fill the time between rounds. That makes it just as appealing for couples and mixed groups as it is for low- and mid-handicap golfers chasing a proper test.
The golf is the main event, but this is the kind of resort that also works well for couples and mixed groups, thanks to the spa, pools and strong dining line-up. Whether you are building a two-night break around a single round or putting together a longer Wild Atlantic Way itinerary, The Hawthorn gives you a strong base and a course worth travelling for.
Who is this for?
Golfers who want championship golf with luxury accommodation on site, whether for a society trip, a couples' break or a wider Wild Atlantic Way tour.
Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy strategic golf in the wind and do not mind being tested. The back tees stretch to 7,300 yards into an Atlantic breeze, so come prepared. Higher handicappers will still enjoy the setting and the challenge, but forward tees are the sensible call if you want to keep the round moving.

This is not a course where you can hit driver everywhere and hope for the best. Christy O'Connor Jnr. had a gift for designing layouts that use their landscape rather than fight it, and the course at The Hawthorn is a strong example of that approach. The par-72 stretches to 7,300 yards from the championship tees, but the yardage is almost secondary to what the Atlantic wind does to every number on the card. The iconic hawthorn trees that give the hotel its name are dotted throughout the layout, bending and twisting in directions that tell you everything you need to know about the prevailing conditions before you have reached into your bag.
The best scores here come from picking the right lines into the wind, leaving full approaches where possible and respecting the movement around the greens. The terrain rolls across the Renville Point headland in a way that constantly asks you to think about angle and position rather than simply launching it as far as you can. Fairways are generous enough to reward a well-placed tee shot, but miss them in the wrong direction and the hawthorn rough and coastal slopes will find you out quickly.
Green complexes are expansive and intricately contoured. Accurate approach play is rewarded, and anything short or wide tends to leave a tricky up-and-down. The turf is well maintained throughout, and the routing makes the most of its coastal position, with wide views across Galway Bay a constant companion and the rugged Clare hills visible across the water on a clear day.
The opening holes set the tone well, giving you a proper sense of occasion from the first tee. The closing stretch brings you back towards the bay with the kind of finish that makes you want to turn around and go again. In between, the course shifts through different moods. Some holes sit in more sheltered ground, others are fully exposed to whatever the Atlantic decides to send across. Club selection becomes a genuine art form, and the round consistently rewards those who play within themselves over those who try to overpower it.
For golfers who want local knowledge on their side, caddie services are available and worth considering, particularly if it is your first time round. Premium Titleist and TaylorMade rental clubs are on hand if you are travelling light, Motocaddy GPS trolleys take the legwork out of the walk, and the pro shop is well stocked for anything you might have forgotten to pack.

This is the type of course we were expecting to play all three times. the only complaint is there was a tournament qualifier and it took us 5 hours to play a round of golf.

It was a tad chilly but the course and facilities including getting trolleys and buggies were the best of all of them
