LaFinca Golf Madrid

If you want to add a proper championship course to a Madrid city break, LaFinca Golf Madrid is a very smart place to start. Just 15 minutes from the centre, it gives you a polished 18-hole test, top-class practice facilities and the kind of setting that feels a world away from the city without actually being far from it at all.

For golfers heading to Madrid for a short break, that convenience is a big part of the appeal. You can stay in the city, enjoy the restaurants and nightlife, then be on the first tee without losing half the day to transfers. It is a combination that works particularly well for city-break golfers, and one that very few European capitals can offer at this level.

The course is the work of Stirling & Martin Golf Course Architects. Wide Agrostis fairways invite confident driving, but the greens are quick and full of movement, so you need to be precise with your approaches and think carefully about where you leave the ball. Fescue rough frames the playing corridors without being unfairly punishing. It is playable for most handicap levels, but the better you strike it, the more you will appreciate the design.

LaFinca also has a strong sense of seclusion. Surrounded by the contemporary villas and manicured grounds of the LaFinca estate, the course feels removed from the noise of the city even though Madrid's restaurants, culture and nightlife are a short taxi ride away.

Who is this for?
Golfers combining a Madrid city trip with a round at a premium course, corporate visitors looking for a refined day's golf near the capital's business district, and international travellers who want high-quality golf without sacrificing access to one of Europe's most exciting cities.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who appreciate fast Agrostis greens, strategic bunkering and a well-presented championship layout. The multiple tee options mean higher handicappers will enjoy the round too, but this is a course that genuinely rewards those who can shape the ball and manage their approach play.

LaFinca Golf Course

Every hole at LaFinca Golf Madrid carries the name of one of the world's great lakes, from Lake Superior and Baikal to the more intimate Correntoso in Argentina. It is a nice touch, and the design backs it up. Each hole has its own character, and the variety across the 18 keeps the round interesting from start to finish.

The opener, Saint Louis, is a generous par 5 of 517 metres that runs alongside the LaFinca development with water in play on the left. It is not a threatening start, but the wide fairway and clear sightlines encourage you to commit early and set a positive tone for the round.

The front nine builds steadily from there. The 6th, Baikal, is the standout hole on the way out. A 394-metre par 4, it tightens as you approach a green protected on both sides by bunkers, with the undulations demanding precise iron play rather than brute force. The 8th, Leman, is a par 3 of 210 metres where an elevated green, complex relief and a dominant headwind make club selection the key decision. Get it wrong and the Agrostis surface will make you pay.

The back nine is where LaFinca really tightens the screws. The 15th, Bled, is the signature hole. A short par 3 at 123 metres, it plays to a near-island green with water on almost every side. It is one of the standout short holes on the card, especially when the breeze picks up, and it is the kind of hole you will be talking about on the way back to the clubhouse. The closing hole, Cráter, named after Crater Lake in Oregon, is a par 5 of 518 metres that demands careful shot-making all the way to a well-protected green. A fitting finish.

Throughout, the Agrostis stolonifera surfaces maintain a consistency that takes serious investment to achieve on the Castilian plateau. LaFinca uses an irrigation system integrated with a weather station and humidity sensor network, along with an automated fertigation system, to keep the course in shape year-round.

The clubhouse at LaFinca Golf Madrid was designed by the LaFinca A+D team and the restaurant is one of the real highlights of the visit. The kitchen delivers a polished dining experience with strong service and views back across the course that make it easy to stretch a post-round lunch well into the afternoon. Whether you are settling in properly after your round or grabbing a coffee on the terrace before heading back into the city, the quality of the food and the comfort of the space make it a genuinely enjoyable place to finish the day.

The pro shop is well stocked with leading brands and a solid range of equipment and apparel, so if you have forgotten something or want to pick up a piece of kit before your round, you will find what you need.

The academy at LaFinca is one of the best-equipped practice setups in the Madrid area. The driving range stretches over 300 metres and features four tee lines, three of which are natural Agrostis grass bays and one covered, all integrated with Trackman Range technology. There is also a full short-game area with a putting green, approach zone and bunker practice facility, so you can work on every part of your game before you head out.

The clubhouse houses a modern fitness room with up-to-date equipment, useful for warming up properly before your round or stretching out afterwards. It is a practical addition that reflects the club's broader ambition to deliver a complete day rather than just a tee time.

For those who want professional input, the academy offers private lessons, group sessions and on-course outings with an instructor, all delivered in 55-minute sessions. The on-course option, covering nine holes with a PGA professional, is particularly useful for first-time visitors who want to understand the course's strategic nuances before going it alone.

LaFinca is one of the best options for golfers who want a serious round without leaving Madrid behind. You get a well-conditioned championship layout, excellent practice facilities and a location that fits neatly into a city break. It is not trying to be a links or a heathland classic. It is a modern course, designed intelligently by Stirling & Martin and maintained to a high standard throughout the year.

If you are visiting Madrid and want to play quality golf without a long drive out of town, La Finca should be right near the top of your list. For corporate visitors and international travellers who want discretion, quality and a straightforward experience, it is a very easy recommendation.
