La Monacilla Golf Club opened in 2011 and it's quickly become a favourite for golfers who want to see a different side of Southern Spain. Designed by José María Olazábal, the course makes the most of the natural contours, so the round feels like it belongs to the land rather than being built on top of it.

From the tee, you'll find plenty of width to play with, which is great news if you're travelling with a mixed-ability group. That said, it's not a simple point-and-shoot layout. Better players will enjoy picking lines, shaping the right ball flight and deciding when to take on risk, especially when the wind gets up and the fairways are running firm.

Approaches are where La Monacilla really starts to ask questions. The greens are generous, but there's enough movement in them that leaving the ball on the wrong side can quickly turn a good shot into a tricky two-putt. Tucked pins and smart bunker placement keep you honest without making the course feel overly punishing.

If you're looking to escape the busier coastal hotspots for a day, this is a strong option. It's scenic, strategic and nicely walkable, with enough variety to make you want to come back and play it again with a bit of local knowledge in your pocket.

Who is this for?
Golfers after a well-designed inland round in Southern Spain, ideal for couples, friends and societies who want variety without a brutal test.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who enjoy course management and using the terrain, plus mixed groups who want a fair challenge and an enjoyable day out.

La Monacilla Golf Club

Boasting five sets of tees means this course can be played from anything between 7492 yards right down to a more manageable 5302 yards meaning golfers of any standard can enjoy this wonderful course. Tree lined fairways demand accuracy from the tee but the main challenge comes from the necessity to safely negotiate huge water hazards and the gentle undulations and elevation changes that make solid club selection paramount. Olazabal’s design is a fantastic option for any golfers touring the south coast of Spain.

As well as the fantastic golf course La Monacilla Golf Club boasts superb practice facilities including an impressive 300 meter driving range as well as pitching, chipping, bunker and putting areas; perfect for sharpening up before heading to the first tee.

Great layout, the condition of the course was extremely dry but enjoyable all the same.

Quite a lot of fairways were poor. The water areas were mainly empty which was probably why some fairways were burnt off.

Unfortunately the course is very dry and they were working on the greens. Very sad as they just don’t have the water to look after the course.

My score of the club which is lovely with very friendly and helpful staff is only reflective due to the lack of rain and watering of the surfaces. Beautiful course just needs some tlc and more rain. But of course as a members club not always as easy as a complex like DoubleTree. Not saying don't play it, just check condition first. Would recommend spraying up as mosquitos were present

At the end of November the fairway grass is dormant so looks pale and dried out. The fairways are therefore tight and a bit unforgiving. The greens were good in the main apart from some areas of fungal disease. I’m sure they’ll be back by spring. It’s a fair track which encourages the driver on most holes. Some nice par threes in there too. The club house

A very long course and difficult for high handicap players to reach in regulation. The course looks in poor condition with many areas needing attention. It was especially noticeable on the fringes of many of the greens which had sand around them. The design of the course is great but it looks as if it is want of some investment on the course condition. Many in the group enjoyed the course but some were very disappointed in the condition.
