Braid's design philosophy is clear here, placing a premium on positioning and course management rather than simply overpowering the holes. James Braid's design measures 6,452 yards from the back tees and provides a good test for all golfers. The dog-leg 9th, the long 17th and the elevated tee on 18 are amongst the favourites at Lancaster.
Braid has managed to create a layout that harmonises with the surrounding landscape while icorporating spectacular touches of theatre. after the front nine the course turns from a parkland layout to one of sea views, looking out towards Morecambe Bay.
Peter Alliss listed the 18th hole in his Top 10 finishing holes! Starting from a high tee you have to carry a ravine of rough, sand & water to reach the green. An oak tree guards the putting surface alongside four bunkers, one of them, built into the bank below, is perhaps the most notorious on the course.

On-site rooms are set in the 14th-century Ashton Hall, just a short walk from the Pro Shop and the 1st tee. There are 12 en-suite bedrooms sleeping up to 18 guests, mostly twins with a small number of singles, so it's a handy set-up for societies and groups. Very Clean & comfortable rooms but in keeping with the Castle the rooms were small & dated. The staff were very welcoming & we had excellent food albeit a small menu. The golf course is a James Braid course with wide open fairways & lovely greens. It was in great condition & better for playing twice.

The course was in fantastic condition for October, the greens were just like Summer greens. Just one gripe more notice would of been nice that winter wheels and mats were required an extra £85 had to be spent to be allowed on the course
