The Signatures Course is what puts Legend on the map. Rather than commissioning a single architect, the resort invited 18 Tour professionals to each design one hole. The result is a par 72 championship layout that measures 6,534 metres for daily play and stretches to 7,748 metres for tournament conditions, making it the longest golf course on the African continent.

Names linked to the course include Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington and Gary Player, and while the concept grabs the attention, the layout stands up on its own. You can feel the different personalities at work as you move through the round. Some holes open up across wide, tawny grasslands where the fairways seem to stretch towards the horizon. Others tighten into dense bush where placement matters far more than brute force and the only gallery is likely to be an impala picking its way through the rough.

The course moves through natural Waterberg terrain, so there is real variety from tee to green. Long, strategic par 4s demand precise positioning off the tee. Shorter holes close in around you, where imagination counts for more than distance and the greens are well guarded enough to make club selection a proper puzzle, particularly when the afternoon heat shimmers off the surrounding rock faces.

It is a great test, but not one that feels manufactured. Better players will find plenty to think about from the back tees, while mid-handicappers can play a more manageable length without losing any of the atmosphere.

The Tribute Course is far more than a novelty add-on. This 10-hole par 3 layout recreates some of the most famous short holes in world golf, with one original Legend hole completing the set. Walk it and you will play Augusta National's 12th, the Golden Bell, where Rae's Creek has swallowed so many Masters dreams. You will take on a recreation of the 11th at St Andrews, High In, and face Royal Troon's notorious 8th, the Postage Stamp, a hole that has ended careers and made legends in equal measure.

With the driving range, pro shop, clubhouse, restaurant and swimming pool all based here, the Tribute Course area is also the most social part of the resort. The Extreme 19th is the shot everyone comes to see. Reached by helicopter, the tee sits on the summit of Hanglip Mountain with the green some 400 metres below, shaped like the African continent. At 361 metres, this is not a gimmick. It is a serious challenge and one of the most unusual shots in golf.

The full experience is what makes it special. The helicopter transfer sets the tone before you even reach the tee, giving you a bird's-eye view of the Waterberg landscape that puts the scale of the reserve into perspective. Once you are up top, the view is something else entirely. Miles of bushveld stretch away in every direction, the air is still and the drop below is genuinely vertiginous. Then you look at the green and start doing the maths on your swing.
