The game of golf has been played in Loughrea for almost a century with the original course being built on 60 acres of hilly land beside the Kincullia road at Caheronaun.
In 1954 a new 9 holes were built at Graigue and the course was eventually expanded to 18 holes in 1992 by Eddie Hackett. Further updates were added in 2002 to produce the Par 71 course played today.
The layout runs over gently rolling hills that get steeper as the round pregresses. The fairways are lined with mature trees and water hazards come into play on several holes, including the signature par-3 8th, which requires a tee shot over a lake. The course has a good mix of short and long holes, with several doglegs and tight fairways that require accurate shot placement.
The clubhouse at Loughrea Golf Club offers a range of facilities, including a bar, restaurant, and pro shop. Overall, Loughrea Golf Course is a picturesque and enjoyable golfing experience that is popular with locals and visitors alike.
