Marcosimone Golf Club

Marcosimone Golf Club

Marcosimone Golf Club is located just 30 minutes northeast of Rome and boasts 27 glorious golf holes. The headline set of 18 holes at the club is the Championship Course and in 2022 it is set to become only the 3rd course on continental Europe to host arguably golf's biggest tournament; the Ryder Cup. The fact it is due to host the Ryder Cup is testament to how good the course is and proves it really is a gem in Italy’s golfing crown. Throughout the round golfers are treated to unrivalled views of the stunning natural landscape with the course being one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the region with beautiful lakes and the Marco Simone Castle being the backdrop to some of the holes. As well as the Championship Course, Marco Simone Golf Club also has a stunning 9 hole set up called the Resort Course and is often played back to back to make 18. Set in the same 110 hectares as the more well known Championship course guests are still treated to same magnificent views of the undulating Roman landscape that is a feature of the headline course. However, the shorter nature of the holes make it a more manageable challenge for higher handicap golfers. Arguably the best hole from the both courses in the 19th hole where guests are treated to panoramic views and is the perfect setting for a couple of post round beers.

    STATS

    Par: 72

    Designed play: Jim Fazio

    Opened for play: 1989

    TEESMen’s pro: 6,936 yards

    Men’s: 6,602 yards

    Women’s pro: 6,141 yards

    Women’s: 5,818 yards

Signature hole: 2nd hole, par 3

The signature hole is considered to bet the par 3, 2nd hole which measures in 185 yards and is arguably the most picturesque on the course. The small green is a feature of the course and is guarded by a lake at the front which awaits any errant tee shots. The 2nd provides the best views of the Marco Simone Castle as this lies behind the golf club. Another of the stand out holes on the course is the 546 yard, par 5 1st hole which plays downhill with a slight dog left to the right. For the longer hitters the green is reachable in 2 but there is plenty of risk and reward associated in doing so as the green is heavily guarded by bunkers and a lake meaning laying up is the best option.

Course designer Jim Fazio has been responsible for the creation of some of the best courses in the world having masterminded courses like Trump National in New York and Lost Lakes Golf Club, Florida both of which are widely revered as 2 of the most beautiful courses in America. The Championship Course at Marcio Simone Golf Club is the headline course and boasts 18 fantastically designed holes that weave through the stunning natural landscape. The course features undulating fairways, small greens that are often well protected and some of the best tee shots in the country. In 2022 the Ryder Cup is to be staged here on the Championship course and with the two Molinari brothers being the 2 of only the 3 Italian players to ever be picked for the Ryder Cup team they will be desperate to play on home soil.

    Resort Course

    STATSPar: 64

    Designed by: Jim Fazio

    Opened for play: 1989

    TEESMen’s: 4,505 yards

    Women’s: 4,313 yards

The resort course is by far the easier of the 2 courses at Marco Simone Golf Club and is perfect for beginners due to the simple and shorter layout of the holes. The course is only 9 holes but is typically turned into 18 by players playing the loop of 9 twice. Despite being the shorter and the less well known of the 2 courses, the resort course still provides wonderful views of the natural surroundings and contains challenging holes that even a low handicapper will enjoy.

On top of a stunning 27 holes, Marco Simone Golf Club also has an incredible driving range which is great for those looking to warm up in a beautiful setting before their round of golf. The range consists of 3 terraces allowing golfers to practice on grass throughout the year and with the length of the driving range being what it is, players can practice in complete safety from both ends meaning there is always plenty of space for everyone. After the round the clubhouse is a fantastic place to enjoy a few beers and marvel in the panoramic views of the natural landscape from the terrace.
