0800 043 6644Obstacles to be negotiated include the beautiful but fast-flowing River Pont, which interferes on more than one occasion, particularly on the long par-4s which are the most testing aspect of the course, and the dry stone ‘ha ha' wall, which runs directly across the estate.
A relatively easy walk, Matfen Hall is ideal for golf breaks, with the new 9-hole course easing the traffic over the main track, and offering a great opportunity to those still mastering the game.
At the end of an enjoyable round, the newly refurbished clubhouse, known as ‘Keeper's Lodge', guarantees a warm welcome and a relaxing environment.
At the long par-3 17th, golfers are challenged to find the putting surface, a narrow strip of green perched perilously over the river below.
Matfen Hall is a privately-owned hotel of the highest quality, with a great location in the Northumberland countryside, and also close to the centre of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The 53 guest rooms have been sympathetically restored and decorated by owners Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett, helping the hotel establish a reputation as one of the best destinations for golf and leisure breaks in the North-East. With history dating back to 1830, when the house itself was constructed by the owner's ancestors, there is a fine blend of tradition and comfort.
Today's guest rooms all boast contemporary touches like satellite television, whilst retaining the quintessential charm of a country home. For a romantic getaway, some of the opulent guest rooms are furnished with four-poster beds. Award-winning dining and a luxurious spa and leisure complex confirm Matfen's position as one of the premier 4* golf break destinations in the North.
Matfen Hall is home to one of the top spa centres in the region, with an extensive collection of treatments on offer. Specialities include massages, body wraps, facials and manicures, while the spa also has a 16-metre swimming pool, whirlpool, soothing salt grotto, crystal steam room, herb-infused sauna, tropical shower and an ice fountain. The leisure centre's fitness area is fitted with the latest Technogym equipment for a total work-out.
The Library and Print Room Restaurant is among the best eateries in the North-East, and has been awarded two AA Rosetttes for fine dining.
The magnificent Great Hall can be set up for private dining in a grandiose setting.
The Keeper's Lodge serves quality pub meals and good ale.
The hotel and room was very nice and comfortable and staff were friendly. We did have an issue with the evening meal, when we checked in we were told we didn't need to book for evening meal just to go to the conservatory bar. When we went for food we were then told that we should have gone to the clubhouse for food but it was now closed. We were able to eat in the conservatory bar but it was from a limited menu. Breakfast the following day was very good however.
No complaints about the hotel and staff, excellent location with fantastic views of the golf course from hotel and clubhouse. Would liked to have had a discount on drinks as in previous years, for a 12-player group.
You must visit Matfen Hall. It is the largest family owned spa hotel in Northumberland with 27 holes to play on the well manicured parkland golf course. Excellent practice facilities and a par 3 course too. Food is excellent. Rooms are completed to a high standard and staff are very helpful. Book it now!
My husband, myself and two friends have stayed at Matfen before but this time we asked to be upgraded and we were not disappointed. Rooms were beautiful, very well maintained and furnished. Breakfast was very good, but one comment would be that tables could maybe be larger to accommodate everything which would make the staffs life easier too. Our meals/snacks at Keepers Lodge were very good and Keith, Pam, Ian and the chefs excellent.
Well appointed hotel with attentive but not intrusive service - very comfortable.
Comfortable spacious rooms all located close to the hotel facilities All very clean and tastefully furnished. A very friendly feel to this hotel. And the staff were very helpful

Originally we had booked to stay at Marr Hall on the Clyde, a venue that we had stayed at before and would have gladly returned to had the weather forecast not been horrendous for the duration of our stay!

Luckily, YGT were able to facilitate our request for a change of venue to Matfen Hall in Northumbria.

Travelling from Edinburgh following the A68 on the sat-nav was fine and the last 4 miles were really interesting going along a single track road to the village of Matfen. We shall have to revisit that route when we return in the future!!

The hotel looks stunning and the premier room we stayed in was beautifully appointed, with a fantastic view over the golf course. After our last round of golf we decided to try out the spa facilities and we were not disappointed; very nice and just what we needed after a weekend’s golf.

Before teeing off we had a light lunch at the Keepers Lodge where the prices are sensible and the staff are very pleasant; we were off to a great start!

The course comprises of three nine hole loops and should appeal to golfers of all abilities. There are some challenging holes which I really enjoyed. Matfen Hall has a very good, free dowloadable app that does flyovers over each hole, making it slightly easier for anyone playing the course for the 1st time.

As it was an early birthday present to me, we ate at the restaurant which, while obviously costing more, boasted fine dining and very attentive staff.

We really enjoyed staying at Matfen Hall and shall definitely return. The whole experience was very enjoyable and cannot thank YGT for all of their assistance.

The set up at Matfen Hall is quite unique with there being 3, 9 hole courses that you can play, each day we were given 2 of the 3 courses to play each starting and finishing near the clubhouse. The greens were very good but the teeing areas were not of the same standard. The courses are very playable and you can score well with receptive greens. The rough however is extremely thick and it is virtually impossible to find a ball that misses the fairway or first cut.
A challenging course especially for higher handicappers but this didn't detract from the enjoyment. The course itself was in great condition in pleasant surroundings. No complaints from our group.
Wide forgiving fairways. You’ll love it
Time on course over three days was fine, fortunate with weather which was a bonus.
The course was a fairly long course with sometimes long walks from Green to the next Tee which was often poorly signposted. Provided you played reasonably straight there were few hazards. Pleasant surroundings and bird life.
Very enjoyable
Well kept course. They were trimming the edges of the greens before we had breakfast. Very forgiving fairways. Good sand in bunkers. Smooth greens all of the same pace. Marvellous
