The Old Course, founded in 1889, stands as one of the earliest golf clubs in the West of England. Since its inception, golf has thrived on this common land. It is often compared to an inland links course, devoid of sand or water hazards, instead featuring natural obstacles like the Bulwarks and quarries that tell the story of the region's past. From May to October, cows roam freely across the Common.
In a 1890 edition of the Illustrated London News, the course was characterised as "the original 'links' established in 1889, requiring a 'high' level of skill, strength, judgment, and patience; the residents of Gloucestershire are fortunate to have such a beautiful and expansive common for their golfing pursuits," a sentiment that remains true to this day.

The Avening and Cherington courses blend the original 18-hole design by F.W. Hawtree from the mid-1970s with an additional 18 holes crafted by his son, Martin Hawtree. Together, these courses showcase a unique mix of holes created by both father and son.
The course features flat parkland with minimal hazards, making it suitable for higher handicappers. The 7th hole is challenging due to fully grown trees affecting drive placement and the back nine are the most picturesque holes.

The Cherington course features a links-style layout with wide fairways and undulating greens, encouraging players to pitch short and let the ball roll to the pins. It offers 18 solid holes and the excellent winter drainage makes it ideal for year-round play.
