As you would expect, Thomas's layout takes in the natural undulations of the land, but he has used the inherent features of the landscape to create hazards. The greens are very subtle, a feature of the designer's ability to create a good challenge, whilst retaining the course's playability for golfers of all standards.
Adding to Oulton's golfing repertoire is the 9-hole Hall course, which may not be long, but it will be an enjoyable experience for all those who visit on a golf break.
The investment programme has encompassed the clubhouse, which is now a superb two-storey facility with a restaurant and excellent corporate banqueting capabilities.
Oulton Hall is the only 5* golf resort in the north of England, and is currently benefitting from a £7.5 million investment programme. This will only serve to confirm the quality on offer at Oulton Hall, whose Grade II listed mansion is a truly stunning construction.
It has been sympathetically converted to boast 152 guest rooms, including 12 deluxe, and 7 suites. The building itself may be traditional, but the fittings and furnishings of the bedrooms are contemporary, ensuring that visitors receive the best of both worlds.
The surrounding gardens are expertly trimmed and manicured, testament to the attention to detail that allows Oulton Hall to stand apart as a destination for a golf break in the north.
The newly refurbished leisure complex features a sublime swimming pool, a steam room, sauna, gymnasium and aerobics studio. For something a little more sedate, there are a number of health and beauty treatments on offer.
The excellent Brontë Restaurant has been recognised with an AA Rosette, and serves superb French and English cuisine.
The Blayds Restaurant offers diners something a little more informal throughout the day.
Large, smart hotel, friendly staff & good food
We were a party of 31 ladies playing golf for 2 days. Everything went greatness. David and histhe staff in golf restaurant/coffee shop was great. Really helpful and friendly
lovely hotel staff very friendly food was good bar on the deer side
Lovely, stylish, comfortable hotel. We felt we had a very good deal by taking a “Sunday driver” and thoroughly enjoyed our mini-break. The breakfast was wonderful and all the staff very pleasant and helpful.
Rooms excellent large and airy very clean, staff very good, food first class, drinks a little pricey.Golf course mmmmm,a few of the tee boxes were a disgrace, greens could hav been better, bunkers, they were something else.... It could be an exception course, where we're the green keepers????. Other than that we all agreed it was a very good weekend.
The course was fine holes 1 to 18 ,19 to 27 not so good .The staff at the clubhouse were very rude and miserable for the 2 days we were there ,the pro was a nice chap very helpful. The staff at the hotel were nice and the rooms were clean and comfortable, the food was very good in the hotel and the clubhouse it was just the staff in the clubhouse which got everyone's back up from the first moment we set foot in the place.
When we booked in we were told there was a £10 surcharge for eating in the hotel restaurant rather than in the club house for our evening meal. The staff told us this was a condition in the small print. However when I retrieved the email no mention of this could I find. Whereas eating in the clubhouse is fine for a group of men etc , we were a group of 4 mixed couples . We managed to get it rescindedbut thought you should know for future reference . We discussed this as a group and decided this condition might prevent us booking oulton hall again as a future venue. However we enjoyed it this time.
Hotel in parts is fantastic with good leisure facilities, but let down by tiredness of carpets, bathrooms new staff with limited training and poor restaurant service. No gin glasses available on 2 consecutive nights in bar - drinks were served in 2 half pint mugs !! With drinks costing over £10 each this is not acceptable for a hotel of this standing.
Excellent all round. Course good although tee boxes a bit ropey.rooms and food good. Breakfast top class.
There for three days two nights. Accommodation was first class, apart from a break in to one of our parties car, where two sets of clubs were taken. This obviously put a damper on the whole week end and when we found out this was a regular occurrence at this venue, it made us feel even worse.
Drinks bit expensive but otherwise ok ..yourgolftravel made mistake with tee time on sat sent me email 11.50 tee off went to play and was told tee was 7.40 but golf pro sorted us out and fitted us in also your golf didn't book us in for eve meal on Saturday but again hotel sorted it out
Had a lovely stay accommodation fabulous food great
What a beautiful hotel. The staff were so helpful and friendly and the hotel was kept spotless.
Lovely looking hotel in fantastic grounds. Staff were excellent, friendly and helpful with a smile on their face. Leisure facilities were clean and welcoming but very busy - went on a Saturday with the hotel accommodating wedding party.
Hotel was excellent, food was brilliant, staff were very helpful. Golf was well organised with great facilities. I would certainly recommend to anyone - first class.
Very welcoming staff in the Pro shop and also in the Hotel. Excellent service in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Overall a very enjoyable experience.
My only slight criticism is that we were not informed upon booking that it would be advisable to book your table in the restaurant of your choosing(Al A Carte or Clubhouse) though both dining experiences were excellent.
Good hotel with lots of facilities and comfortable rooms. Reception staff not the most helpful and seemed unaware of eating options and couldn't make booking for dinner so we had to do it ourselves. However for a golf trip such as ours its well worth considering.
The Hotel facilities and rooms are top quality - but each time I have been (this was the third time) little things seem to go wrong. This time it was double bed configurations in our three twin rooms and our booking for 20:30 for dinner didn’t seem to have been auctioned. Both of these were on our booking confirmation and acknowledged by the reception staff as being booked.
Ok food was limited and cold when served. rooms were nice and spacious

Tees & greens were rough, scruffy & bumpy. Course was wet overall with extremely wet patches.
Preferred 1-18. 19-27 more difficult I was in a 3 ball both days and was round in just under 4 hours
played all the holes over three days was good bit wet one day greens were slow but the weather wont of helped but over all great condition
Sunday was slow because there were a lot of 4 balls playing but Monday was quieter and we went round fairly quickly. The course reflected the amount of use on it and there were 27 holes to play round. Some of the holes were fairly ordinary and a few were challenging and interesting. We would go again!
Read above quotes about the courses.
Tees and greens were poor the rough was quite severe
Tees in poor condition and non existant 1st cut rough - if your ball was a couple of feet off the fairway you were struggling to find it. Greens in good condition, but no semi rough meant that play was very slow with lots of waiting for players to find balls. Better course management required. Allow at least 4.5 hours for a round !
Sunday was a disgrace. Nearly 5 hours to play 12 holes .we had enough and walked off .we were told yourgolftravel messed tee off time up .my email clearly stated 2pm tee off .they said we were booked in for 12pm .and this caused problem. Really annoying I had my relatives from Australia with me .although when we started our round they said we were 2pm tee off. Only when I complained later in day did they say yourgolftravel was at fault. Very disappointing and no apology.
good course, however on our second round the pro shop had no record of our booking. We had to play a combination of holes 19 to 27 then 1 to 9
Very relaxed round. 4 hours not bad. Greens good but flag positions tough.Ladies tees excellent but mens well worn .
The layout is fantastic and the only let down was the condition of some tee boxes and bunkers.
Played the championship course for two days, but mixed in the nine hole Hall Course with the first nine of the championship course on the Tuesday. The back nine of the championship course and the Hall Course are far superior than the 1st nine on the championship. Some tees are very, very poor and bunkers are full of stone.
Found some of the tee boxes bare and uneven and the bunkers were terrible very little sand and plenty of stones hotel and food was 1st class
Sunday was slow because massive ladies group all on buggies slowed everybody send us on a different back nine which speeded it up well done course marshal
nice course but not enough sand in the bunkers
The course was in excellent condition. I didn't have a single bad lie on the fairway. the greens were true and well looked after. My only criticism would be of the bunkers, there was too many stones and not enough sand, but that didn't spoil two really enjoyable rounds with some testing holes, but some fair ones. I will return to play again.
We went around holes 19 to 27 first and then onto 1 to 9. There was a noticeable difference between the quality of the main course and holes 19 to 27 and if you book suggest you keep to the main course.
Challenging at times, good for all handicaps. Fantastic views and picturesque scenery.
Very helpful staff in the Pro shop and in the clubhouse bar. That said the course was lacking in available buggies and/or electric caddies. The greens weren’t in great condition in comparison to some other courses played and some of the tee areas were in poor condition, but that didn’t prevent us having two enjoyable rounds.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Lay out off the 3 x 9 Hole Courses with some fantastic holes. We played here many years ago but it wont be that long again before we return.
Greens a little uneven on our first day but thereafter no problem. Pro shop staff very pleasant and helpful with a good range of products available. Fairways lacked some distinction but it was late Sept early Oct so perhaps not surprising. Bunkers vary quite a lot and could be better but overall an enjoyable three days.
For the time of year the course was in excellent condition and the greens although tricky were a good test.
Played Friday all course was open Saturday bunkers were G.U.R, greens were great
