Just a short hop north from Riga is the Ozo Golf Club, so named because it was founded by Sandis Ozolinsh, a local sporting hero who found fame in the United States playing ice hockey in the NHL.

While Ozo was off earning millions on the ice with teams including Anaheim, Florida and New York, he developed a fondness for golf, and returned home to commission the amazing golf course.
Golf architect Rob Swedberg was given the job of creating the golf complex, which opened in 2002. The resultant championship layout is amazing; the land that was once a rubbish tip is now a gleaming 7,033 yard course, carved around great lakes, and planted with beautiful trees. The course is maturing year on year, and is already the regular host of both Latvian and Baltic Opens.
Having put Latvia on the golfing map, Ozo has a burgeoning reputation, and is a certain highlight of a golfing adventure in Riga.
Don’t just take my word for it – the New York Times golf correspondent personally recommended Ozo!
