Pitreavie Golf Club

Located in the heart of Fife, Pitreavie Golf Club sits just outside Dunfermline and is a cracking option if you want a quieter round away from the St Andrews crowds. Designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the architect behind Augusta National and Cypress Point, it's a parkland course that still shows his trademark strategic touch.

The par-71 layout winds through mature woodland and gently rolling ground, with Scots pine and beech framing plenty of holes. It isn't a brute of a test by modern standards, but it asks you to think. The challenge is in positioning your tee shot to open up the right angle in, then judging approaches into greens with subtle breaks and borrowed contours, plus well-placed bunkers that can turn a lazy swing into a dropped shot.

You'll also get some lovely views across the Fife countryside from the higher parts of the course, and the club has that traditional members' feel without being stuffy. After the round, the clubhouse is comfortable, the bar is friendly and you can expect solid, no-fuss food.

If you're building a Fife itinerary, Pitreavie is an easy add-on for a parkland contrast to the big links names. Include it on your next Scotland golf break and you'll get a genuine MacKenzie experience at a more relaxed pace.
