Golf Courses at Quinta Do Lago
South course is the jewel in the crown of Quinta Do Lago and, despite its
championship status, the course presents an interest and challenge to players
of all abilities.
Following the design of William Mitchell, who introduced USGA specification greens, tees and bunkers, the course has gained a strong reputation and has become one of the favourites amongst many who frequent the Algarve. The impressive layout, which overlooks the stunning Ria Formosa National Park, is set amongst wildflowers, umbrella pines and lakes and is a supremely tranquil and enjoyable place to play golf.
While the front nine calls for more draw shots from the tee, the back nine looks for a fade, keeping golfer on their toes from the first tee to the 18th green. Although many of the fairways are fairly wide and undulating, the course is made more challenging by a variety of doglegs and strategically located hazards which golfers must plan their way around with good course management. Accurate approach shots are also essential to reach many of the well protected greens in regulation.

|Did you know?||The course record was broken at the 1989 Portuguese Open by Colin Montgomerie. In total, Monty shot a remarkable 24 under par, including a round of 63, and eventually won by 11 shots!|
|Previously hosted||Portuguese open (1976, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2001)|

Signature Hole – No. 15: Par 3, 218 yards (White Tees)
The 8th, 10th and 18th holes certainly deserve a mention, acting as testing par 4s for low handicapped players. However, the par three 15th is the signature hole. It requires a lengthy 218 yard carry over a lake onto a well guarded green surrounded by pine trees.
The South course at Quinta do Lago is ranked as one of the best courses in Portugal
The North Course is set to be the new pride of Quinta Do Lago. Following its redesign in 2014 by Beau Welling and winning Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley, the course places a firm emphasis on precision and strategy rather than brute force an ignoracne. The €9.6m investment included the rebuilding of all greens, tees, bunkers & cart paths, as well as improvement to irrigation and drainage systems using the latest state-of-the-art technology.
The North Course is now one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the Algarve and the updated design has allowed it to keep pace with modern technology and remain a relevant challenge. Cool season rough grass, and the select planting of native grasses and specimen trees have been introduced to further reduce the impact on the environment, whilst also helping to make the course more visually appealing.
|Designed by||William Mitchell, Joe Lee, Rocky Roquemore, Beau Welling, Paul McGinley|

|Yellow||6,259 yards||SSS 72|

Signature Hole – No. 12: Par 4, 2394 yards (White Tees)
The highlight of the North course is the 12th. Whilst also being the most visually appealing hole on the course, it is one of the most challenging. The hole doglegs its way around a ominous lake, and even the best of drives leaves a treacherous approach shot to a large undulating green.
Laranjal is situated just 2 km east of the resort, in the Ludo Valley, and its reputation is growing fast. The course is routed through orange groves, which is where the name Laranjal was derived. Laranjal is certainly unusual too. It contains five par 3’s, eight par 4’s and five par 5’s, as oppose to following the standard 4-10-4 format prevalent in most courses. This subtle change is a fine touch to what is simply, a quite stunning course.
Laranjal is renowned for its five beautiful lakes and its abundance of umbrella pines, corks and orange trees. The course also boasts well-defined greens, as well as some spectacular narrow fairways sown with Bermuda grass, demanding the highest level of concentration and accuracy. It is a great addition to Quinta Do Lago, and its varied layout, which provides many eye catching holes, is certainly worth a visit.

Signature Hole – No. 11: Par 3, 230 yards (Black Tees)
There are many stand-out holes at Laranjal but it’s hard to argue against the 11th being the Signature Hole. This stunning par 3 is played over a sizeable lake towards a green that is guarded at the front by a remarkable bunker which has no boundary at the front, rather disappearing into the depths of the lake. A miniature beach of you will.
The green is framed at the back by tall umbrella pines and slopes severely from front to back, meaning that any approach shot above the pin when it’s in the back portion of the green will leave a lightning fast putt down the hill.As demanding as it is beautiful, this is one of the standout par 3s in Portugal.

Marginally prefer to the North course. Some very interesting holes. Good food at clubhouse especially the Caesar salad!
Really like this. Interesting course, 5 par 5s, 5 par 3s. In great condition and greens a decent pace
Good course, challenging but playable.
A fantastic test of risk / reward with holes snaking around with water in play across several holes. Our second year of playing the course and we will be back!!
Excellent golf course in great condition
not a particularly good day.
another good round for me; a par 5 at the 2nd & par at the 4rth were the highlights.
I played the best golf here for a long time had a very satisfying par at the last.
Really liked this course with tree lined fairways and signature hole over water. Many holes where you're unaware of other groups to detact from the enjoyment.
Quite busy with Marshalls speeding you up if taking too long irrespective of group behind losing touch. Fairly open course to siuit all levels.
We enjoyed the course very much. It was in very good condition and the surrounding area was lovely. Overall it was a pleasure to play on it and so we changed the booked round at Laranjal to play it again! The food in the club house was very good as was the overall service of the staff.
This was by far the best course we played another notch up fron Vale do Lobo. Greens again were quick and difficult as you expect in Portugal but condition of the fairways was superb.
Great course, with wide fairways (mainly) and large greens. Excellent condition. Small locker room if there are a group of you.
Was looking forward to this course but found fairway conditions quite poor with the course over played, greens had been micro tined and slow compared to Laranjal. Back 9 more challenging and interesting. There are quite a few hikes between tees as it's definitely constructed for buggies. Wish we had opted for the south course now for the views .
We were placed directly behind a pro am! We walked off after 9 holes and 4 hours-crazy to allow bookings. A lot of people were unhappy. Thankfully, we were able to rebook for 2 days later and the golf manager was very amenable in providing a fresh round but other people did not have this luxury. This is a great course for mid to low handicappers, greens are fast and tricky. Practice facilities are a short walk from the course and better than the north/south course.
Great course as always, fairways and greens in fantastic condition.
Best course of the week.
Hadn't played here for a long time but will be back next year. It was a great experience from the time we arrived to when we left.
greens a bit slow some defaults on fairways and rough to much houses near fairways (even if some are very nice)
First time since course revised. Enjoyed it. Good condition.
Cut short by driving wind and rain. Gave up on 12th soaked to skin.
Course very busy. Quite demanding for 23 handicapper. Greens slower than expected.
Very playable and in very good condition. The best of the 3 quinta course. Played in 4 hours and 15 minutes which is good for playing abroad.
After playing the south course the north course took 5 hours and 10 minutes. After playing the 1st went to the par 3 2nd and found 3 groups on that hole. 4 balls going out every 8 minutes. The entire round had 3 groups on every hole. This affected the rating and would give it thought before booking here.
The course is a good layout and in okay condition with the greens being very good. We are not slow players and had all the warnings from the starter above slow play and how they would act. Took 4 hours and 40 minutes which is pretty slow and no action taken anywhere.
An amazing course and we all agreed we will be back next year to play the North and South we hope. Great set up all round.
Really great course but then we played the South Course which was a real wow to play, hence only giving four stars to Laranjal
very helpful staff, excellent facilities tough course.
Great course quite long and hilly, one of our favourites
A very slow round, wouldn’t be our favourite course to play again
Great course, quite a long way between green and tee in places so a buggy is a good idea
One of the slowest rounds of our holidays - usually 3 groups on each hole. course superb and in great condition. one of best courses in the area....A must play
QDL South was in excellent condition as usual. Down side was the speed of the round (nearly 5 hours) Quite expensive for what it is but always good to go back. some great holes.
First time there. Great course and surroundings with some amazing property’s around the course.
Greens had be treated and sand on them. We think that we should of been compensated ie. reduced buggie fee.
Good condition, greens well prepared. Staff very helpful.
Staff helpful and friendly. Course in good condition. Greens well maintained
5.5 hour round, staff were unhelpful and rude. Greens were poor as they had been hollow tuned and sanded the previous day.
Not the greatest facilities at Laranjal, but the staff more than make up for it with their pleasant and helpful attitude. Well done guys.
5 hrs 15 mins was way to slow but we all liked the course it definitely had its challenges
Fantastic course we all loved this one could have played it 3 times
Quinta do Lago's new North Course is looking radiant after the €10 million refurbishment the course has undertaken during the last 10 months.
American Architect Beau Welling and Europe's most recent Ryder Cup winning Captain Paul McGinley have done a fantastic job in redeveloping the course and making it a much fairer test for the average golfer.
removal of a fair few trees, the fairways have been slightly widened, and you
now get a clear vision of where to aim your tee shots, adding a more forgiving
feel to each hole. The undulations in the greens add to the course's defence
and provide the green staff with plenty of options when it comes to interesting
Overall, the general flow of the course has been vastly improved and has given the course the "Wow Factor" that you would expect from Quinta do Lago's top course. Booking the 3 round package including Quinta do Lago's North, South and Laranjal adds the perfect variety to your golfing holiday and will leave you wanting to come back time after time.
one could stand on the 16th tee all day long, just trying to perfect that tee
shot! An inviting short hole from an elevated tee, with an amphitheatre style
green, this is a real gem and one of many highlights."
