Great condition and a good test staff were in a different league to San Lorenzo and Pinheiros. Best we played
Quinta do Lago resort, in the Algarve region of Portugal, is one of the world’s great golf resorts and has had this reputation since it opened. Awarded ‘Europe’s Best Golf Destination’ at the World Golf Awards in 2015 and 2016 as well as Golf Digest ‘Best International Resort’ in 2016 and 2017, it’s safe to say this is as good as it gets. Having held the Algarve Open de Portugal many times, the resort is a member of the prestigious European Tour Properties group and a visit here will make it obvious why.
Less than 20 minutes from Faro airport and the perfect destination for any golf trip, from a couples golfing retreat to the annual lads trip, it is hard to find a better venue. There are three courses, the Paul McGinley Golf Academy and Southern Europe’s only TaylorMade Performance Centre. Quinta do Lago is nestled in between high pines and sand dunes giving it a feeling of seclusion and privacy. It is the perfect place for an active yet relaxing holiday, there are a number of luxury hotels to choose from, including our Signature Collection’s Magnolia Hotel.
This is the one that golfers want to play most largely in part to the course hosting the European Tour on eight occasions. The South Course is nestled perfectly in the Ria Formosa nature reserve and this brings a wonderful character to the course that is hard to beat. The course is a truly great playing experience and is well-placed inside the top 50 courses in Europe. This course is slightly longer than the North Course and will require a touch more accuracy from the tee. This is a more challenging course too but one that is enjoyable for all thanks to the various teeing options.
The par-5 17th hole is a highlight that is well worth the wait as the course builds up to the finish. An accurate tee shot round the dogleg gets you off to a good start as you avoid the rough and some fairway bunkering. Pine trees line this hole making it spectacular especially as you approach the green. Well-struck golf shots are absolutely necessary to score well on this hole stunning hole.

Signature Hole – No. 15: Par 3, 218 yards (White Tees)
The 8th, 10th and 18th holes certainly deserve a mention, acting as testing par 4s for low handicapped players. However, the par three 15th is the signature hole. It requires a lengthy 218 yard carry over a lake onto a well guarded green surrounded by pine trees.
The South course at Quinta do Lago is ranked as one of the best courses in Portugal
€9million was invested in improving this course in 2014, when Paul McGinley and Beau Welling renovated the North Course. The work was extensive and used innovative technology to make the course more environmentally friendly and even easier on the eye. This is a track that golfers of all levels can enjoy but it will still challenge you.
Wonderful trees, well-placed bunkers and water hazards adorn the course and keep you concentrating. The par-4 12th hole is one of the highlights of the round. The 395-yard dogleg makes its way around a huge water hazard and sets you up for a pressure approach into a rolling green. This is deservedly recognised as one of the top 100 courses in Europe.

|Yellow||6,259 yards||SSS 72|
|Red||5,448 yards||SSS 72|
Signature Hole – No. 12: Par 4, 2394 yards (White Tees)
The highlight of the North course is the 12th. Whilst also being the most visually appealing hole on the course, it is one of the most challenging. The hole doglegs its way around a ominous lake, and even the best of drives leaves a treacherous approach shot to a large undulating green.
The land that this course is built on used to be an orange grove and the transformation is nothing short of staggering. Sitting just 2km from the resort in the Ludo Valley, pine and orange trees play a role in the beauty of this course. Voted the best course in Portugal in 2011 this is a challenging track with well-defended greens.
The set-up of this course is unique with five par-5s, eight par-4s and five par-3s. Given that this is a standalone course away from the main resort, the Laranjal has its own clubhouse and practice facilities. These amenities are exactly what you would expect from Quinta do Lago and are of the highest quality. The 11th hole on the course is probably the signature hole, although choosing a highlight is difficult here. A 180 yard par-3 with water to the right of the hole as well as the famous ‘beach bunker’ making that tee shot a little tenser. The green is lightning fast and leaving the ball below the hole is a must to give yourself a chance at a single putt.

Signature Hole – No. 11: Par 3, 230 yards (Black Tees)
There are many stand-out holes at Laranjal but it’s hard to argue against the 11th being the Signature Hole. This stunning par 3 is played over a sizeable lake towards a green that is guarded at the front by a remarkable bunker which has no boundary at the front, rather disappearing into the depths of the lake. A miniature beach of you will.
The green is framed at the back by tall umbrella pines and slopes severely from front to back, meaning that any approach shot above the pin when it’s in the back portion of the green will leave a lightning-fast putt down the hill.
As demanding as it is beautiful, this is one of the standout par 3s in Portugal.
Amongst the practice facilities at Quinta Do Lago is the Academy, which is in partnership with Paul McGinley. Golfers are assisted in improving their technique and strategy. The academy has a strong focus on each individual’s strengths and weaknesses and believes visualisation and feedback are vital for effective learning. Technology such as video analysis and flight scope are used productively, in order to take your game to the next level.
Quinta Do Lago also boasts a state-of-the-art Taylor Made performance centre, designed to give golfers access to the latest TaylorMade equipment and technology. By using the Taylor Made Select Fit System, golfers are able to match the shape of their swing to the ideal club. The academy ensures the performance centre brings about an enjoyable experience for all golfers.
3 pro shops are also on-site in Quinta Do Lago: The North/South clubhouse, Laranjal Clubhouse and Q Boutique at the Paul McGinley Academy. As well as golf equipment, a wide selection of merchandise is on offer.
At The Clubhouse
The Quinta Do Lago clubhouse is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a varied menu to suit all tastes. A coffee dock is also available from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm.

An 18 hole miniature golf course is also available on the Quinta Do Lago resort. The course combines the best holes from around the world and provides great entertainment for both children and adults. Children under four go free, while juniors and adults are priced at €7.50 and €12 respectively.
Perfect for relaxing after a round of golf, the resorts stunning location by the beach also holds a wide range of restaurants, giving you a taste of the Mediterranean flavour that the resort has become famous for.
Quinta do Lago also offers an exclusive events calendar that is put together each year for the benefit of guests and residents. With an action-packed list including picnics in the park, outdoor concerts, beach parties, golf clinics and outdoor movie nights, there is always a new experience to be enjoyed, whatever the time of year.
Luxurious and vibrant, The Magnolia Hotel at Quinta do Lago sits at the heart of the resort with golf, the beach and luxury shopping all awaiting you. With 74 rooms and 7 lodges, there are options to suit a party of any size. The rooms are designed, almost engineered, to ensure comfort as you’ve never experienced before.
The hotel is brimming with facilities to delight including a heated outdoor pool, a gym, a tennis court and an incredible restaurant. Whether you’re having an active holiday or going all-in on relaxation, good food helps make a holiday extra-special. The elegant in-house restaurant is inspired by an American diner and is full of energy. You can also grab a delicious cocktail at the pool bar and soak in some of that summer atmosphere.
You can hire bikes and explore the Ria Formosa nature reserve or sit back and enjoy one of the movie nights put on by the hotel. If you’re part of a larger group and want everyone together, if you are travelling as a family or if you just want that extra-luxury, you should look at hiring a villa. There are also properties available for purchase if you love your Quinto do Lago experience that much, the difficulty here is coming only once.
Great condition and a good test staff were in a different league to San Lorenzo and Pinheiros. Best we played
Goidciurse in decent condition
What an absolute joy. From the courteous staff to the amazing fairways and superb greens. The course was set up beautifully with amazing views.
Quite simply stunning. An open links style course with a number of greens in reach in regulation for the average player. The greens were superb and fast with many undulations making them tricky but so enjoyable. A modest clubhouse with the biggest of welcomes with free pencils, tee pegs, logo-ed pitch mark repairers and two first drinks. A “must play “ !
The South course was newly reopened after annual maintenance. As a result it wasn’t perfect with some aprons and sections of fairways in stages of recovery. The greens were generally fine albeit slower than expected. We played as a two ball every day (3) so wasn’t overly busy. The course is quite challenging and interesting with a devilish par three over water on the back nine especially into a strong breeze !
This for us is the best out there at the moment, each hole offers an individual challenge and has something to offer as you stand on the tee. Perfect condition as usual everything is spot on. Greens never let you down.
Regularly play this course and it never lets you down, it’s a good challenge of golf. Great condition as usual, greens were great. The staff friendly and everything is sorted for you.
Great course for all handicaps
Overall, a great experience.Relatively lower grades on facilities because they are limited in scope, but basically that is needed cf Kingsbarns. As to value for money, games in the Algarve are relatively expensive, hence the grading. We were a two ball and the course was fairly busy with three and four balls, although we got round in under four hours; we did wait to play most shots. Thought course was in excellent condition, staff very helpful and clubs the latest - as usual, no senior shafted clubs - a perennial issue for me and a general one at all of these courses.
Best day of our golf break, course in great condition.
Wonderful golf course and facility's.
A long track in great condition Would always want to go back
Marginally prefer to the North course. Some very interesting holes. Good food at clubhouse especially the Caesar salad!
Really like this. Interesting course, 5 par 5s, 5 par 3s. In great condition and greens a decent pace
Good course, challenging but playable.
A fantastic test of risk / reward with holes snaking around with water in play across several holes. Our second year of playing the course and we will be back!!
Excellent golf course in great condition
not a particularly good day.
another good round for me; a par 5 at the 2nd & par at the 4rth were the highlights.
I played the best golf here for a long time had a very satisfying par at the last.
Really liked this course with tree lined fairways and signature hole over water. Many holes where you're unaware of other groups to detact from the enjoyment.
Quite busy with Marshalls speeding you up if taking too long irrespective of group behind losing touch. Fairly open course to siuit all levels.
We enjoyed the course very much. It was in very good condition and the surrounding area was lovely. Overall it was a pleasure to play on it and so we changed the booked round at Laranjal to play it again! The food in the club house was very good as was the overall service of the staff.
This was by far the best course we played another notch up fron Vale do Lobo. Greens again were quick and difficult as you expect in Portugal but condition of the fairways was superb.
Great course, with wide fairways (mainly) and large greens. Excellent condition. Small locker room if there are a group of you.
Was looking forward to this course but found fairway conditions quite poor with the course over played, greens had been micro tined and slow compared to Laranjal. Back 9 more challenging and interesting. There are quite a few hikes between tees as it's definitely constructed for buggies. Wish we had opted for the south course now for the views .
We were placed directly behind a pro am! We walked off after 9 holes and 4 hours-crazy to allow bookings. A lot of people were unhappy. Thankfully, we were able to rebook for 2 days later and the golf manager was very amenable in providing a fresh round but other people did not have this luxury. This is a great course for mid to low handicappers, greens are fast and tricky. Practice facilities are a short walk from the course and better than the north/south course.
Great course as always, fairways and greens in fantastic condition.
Best course of the week.
Hadn't played here for a long time but will be back next year. It was a great experience from the time we arrived to when we left.
greens a bit slow some defaults on fairways and rough to much houses near fairways (even if some are very nice)
First time since course revised. Enjoyed it. Good condition.
Cut short by driving wind and rain. Gave up on 12th soaked to skin.
Course very busy. Quite demanding for 23 handicapper. Greens slower than expected.
Very playable and in very good condition. The best of the 3 quinta course. Played in 4 hours and 15 minutes which is good for playing abroad.
After playing the south course the north course took 5 hours and 10 minutes. After playing the 1st went to the par 3 2nd and found 3 groups on that hole. 4 balls going out every 8 minutes. The entire round had 3 groups on every hole. This affected the rating and would give it thought before booking here.
The course is a good layout and in okay condition with the greens being very good. We are not slow players and had all the warnings from the starter above slow play and how they would act. Took 4 hours and 40 minutes which is pretty slow and no action taken anywhere.
An amazing course and we all agreed we will be back next year to play the North and South we hope. Great set up all round.
Really great course but then we played the South Course which was a real wow to play, hence only giving four stars to Laranjal
very helpful staff, excellent facilities tough course.
Great course quite long and hilly, one of our favourites
A very slow round, wouldn’t be our favourite course to play again
Great course, quite a long way between green and tee in places so a buggy is a good idea
One of the slowest rounds of our holidays - usually 3 groups on each hole. course superb and in great condition. one of best courses in the area....A must play
QDL South was in excellent condition as usual. Down side was the speed of the round (nearly 5 hours) Quite expensive for what it is but always good to go back. some great holes.
First time there. Great course and surroundings with some amazing property’s around the course.
Greens had be treated and sand on them. We think that we should of been compensated ie. reduced buggie fee.
Good condition, greens well prepared. Staff very helpful.
Staff helpful and friendly. Course in good condition. Greens well maintained
5.5 hour round, staff were unhelpful and rude. Greens were poor as they had been hollow tuned and sanded the previous day.
Not the greatest facilities at Laranjal, but the staff more than make up for it with their pleasant and helpful attitude. Well done guys.
5 hrs 15 mins was way to slow but we all liked the course it definitely had its challenges
Fantastic course we all loved this one could have played it 3 times
Quinta do Lago's new North Course is looking radiant after the €10 million refurbishment the course has undertaken during the last 10 months.
American Architect Beau Welling and Europe's most recent Ryder Cup winning Captain Paul McGinley have done a fantastic job in redeveloping the course and making it a much fairer test for the average golfer.
removal of a fair few trees, the fairways have been slightly widened, and you
now get a clear vision of where to aim your tee shots, adding a more forgiving
feel to each hole. The undulations in the greens add to the course's defence
and provide the green staff with plenty of options when it comes to interesting
Overall, the general flow of the course has been vastly improved and has given the course the "Wow Factor" that you would expect from Quinta do Lago's top course. Booking the 3 round package including Quinta do Lago's North, South and Laranjal adds the perfect variety to your golfing holiday and will leave you wanting to come back time after time.
one could stand on the 16th tee all day long, just trying to perfect that tee
shot! An inviting short hole from an elevated tee, with an amphitheatre style
green, this is a real gem and one of many highlights."
