Golf Courses at Quinta Do Lago
This is the one that golfers want to play most largely in part to the course hosting the European Tour on eight occasions. The South Course is nestled perfectly in the Ria Formosa nature reserve and this brings a wonderful character to the course that is hard to beat. The course is a truly great playing experience and is well-placed inside the top 50 courses in Europe. This course is slightly longer than the North Course and will require a touch more accuracy from the tee. This is a more challenging course too but one that is enjoyable for all thanks to the various teeing options.
The par-5 17th hole is a highlight that is well worth the wait as the course builds up to the finish. An accurate tee shot round the dogleg gets you off to a good start as you avoid the rough and some fairway bunkering. Pine trees line this hole making it spectacular especially as you approach the green. Well-struck golf shots are absolutely necessary to score well on this hole stunning hole.

Signature Hole– No. 15: Par 3, 218 yards (White Tees)
The 8th, 10th and 18th
holes certainly deserve a mention, acting as testing par 4s for low handicapped
players. However, the par three 15th is the signature hole. It
requires a lengthy 218 yard carry over a lake onto a well guarded green
surrounded by pine trees.
€9million was invested in improving this course in 2014, when Paul McGinley and Beau Welling renovated the North Course. The work was extensive and used innovative technology to make the course more environmentally friendly and even easier on the eye. This is a track that golfers of all levels can enjoy but it will still challenge you.
Wonderful trees, well-placed bunkers and water hazards adorn the course and keep you concentrating. The par-4 12th hole is one of the highlights of the round. The 395-yard dogleg makes its way around a huge water hazard and sets you up for a pressure approach into a rolling green. This is deservedly recognised as one of the top 100 courses in Europe.

Signature Hole– No. 12: Par 4, 2394 yards (White Tees)
The highlight of the North course
is the 12th. Whilst also being the most visually appealing hole on
the course, it is one of the most challenging. The hole doglegs its way around
a ominous lake, and even the best of drives leaves a treacherous approach shot to a large undulating
The land that this course is built on used to be an orange grove and the transformation is nothing short of staggering. Sitting just 2km from the resort in the Ludo Valley, pine and orange trees play a role in the beauty of this course. Voted the best course in Portugal in 2011 this is a challenging track with well-defended greens.
The set-up of this course is unique with five par-5s, eight par-4s and five par-3s. Given that this is a standalone course away from the main resort, the Laranjal has its own clubhouse and practice facilities. These amenities are exactly what you would expect from Quinta do Lago and are of the highest quality. The 11th hole on the course is probably the signature hole, although choosing a highlight is difficult here. A 180 yard par-3 with water to the right of the hole as well as the famous ‘beach bunker’ making that tee shot a little tenser. The green is lightning fast and leaving the ball below the hole is a must to give yourself a chance at a single putt.

Hole– No. 11:
Par 3, 230 yards (Black Tees)
There are many stand-out holes at Laranjal but it’s hard to argue against
the 11th being the Signature Hole. This stunning par 3 is played
over a sizeable lake towards a green that is guarded at the front by a
remarkable bunker which has no boundary at the front, rather disappearing into
the depths of the lake. A miniature beach of you will.
The green is framed at the back by tall umbrella pines and slopes severely
from front to back, meaning that any approach shot above the pin when it’s in
the back portion of the green will leave a lightning-fast putt down the hill.
As demanding as it is beautiful, this is one of the
standout par 3s in Portugal.
Amongst the practice facilities at Quinta Do Lago is the Academy, which
is in partnership with Paul McGinley. Golfers are assisted in improving their
technique and strategy. The academy has a strong focus on each
individual’s strengths and weaknesses and believes visualisation and feedback
are vital for effective learning. Technology such as video analysis and flight
scope are used productively, in order to take your game to the next level.
Quinta Do Lago also boasts a state-of-the-art Taylor Made performance
centre, designed to give golfers access to the latest TaylorMade equipment and
technology. By using the Taylor Made Select Fit System, golfers are able to match the shape of their swing to
the ideal club. The academy ensures the performance centre brings about an
enjoyable experience for all golfers.
3 pro shops are also on-site in Quinta Do Lago: The North/South clubhouse, Laranjal Clubhouse and
Q Boutique at the Paul McGinley Academy. As well as golf equipment, a wide
selection of merchandise is on offer.
At The Clubhouse
The Quinta Do Lago clubhouse is open for
breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving a varied menu to suit all tastes. A coffee
dock is also available from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm.
In the unlikely event that the golf doesn’t quite do it
for you, the resort also holds a wide collection of leisure facilities. Tennis,
cycling and water sports are some of the facilities on offer.
An 18 hole miniature golf course is also available on the
Quinta Do Lago resort. The course combines the best holes from around the world
and provides great entertainment for both children and adults. Children under
four go free, while juniors and adults are priced at €7.50 and €12
Perfect for relaxing after a round of golf, the resorts
stunning location by the beach also holds a wide range of restaurants, giving
you a taste of the Mediterranean flavour that the resort has become famous for.

calendar that is put together each year for the benefit of guests and
residents. With an action-packed list including picnics in the park, outdoor
concerts, beach parties, golf clinics and outdoor movie nights, there is always
a new experience to be enjoyed, whatever the time of year.
Accommodation at Quinta Do Lago
Luxurious and vibrant, The Magnolia Hotel at Quinta do Lago sits at the heart of the resort with golf, the beach and luxury shopping all awaiting you. With 74 rooms and 7 lodges, there are options to suit a party of any size. The rooms are designed, almost engineered, to ensure comfort as you’ve never experienced before.
The hotel is brimming with facilities to delight including a heated outdoor pool, a gym, a tennis court and an incredible restaurant. Whether you’re having an active holiday or going all-in on relaxation, good food helps make a holiday extra-special. The elegant in-house restaurant is inspired by an American diner and is full of energy. You can also grab a delicious cocktail at the pool bar and soak in some of that summer atmosphere.
You can hire bikes and explore the Ria Formosa nature reserve or sit back and enjoy one of the movie nights put on by the hotel. If you’re part of a larger group and want everyone together, if you are travelling as a family or if you just want that extra-luxury, you should look at hiring a villa. There are also properties available for purchase if you love your Quinto do Lago experience that much, the difficulty here is coming only once.
A disappointment compared to the South and Larangal courses. The first five and last four holes are interesting, but the intermediate ones are dull, ugly, and separated by long walks through unattractive areas. You have to play the North as part of any package, but I'd avoid it if you can. Not a bad course, but well below the standards of the other two.
A fine course with several tricky and interesting holes. Only the first and last holes were a little bland, the others being challenging and/or thought-provoking. Lovely surroundings and fine views on almost every hole.
We played it twice...started both on back 9 where some of tougher holes. Not sure that is best. We had smaller groups( 2/3 balls) who had started front 9 catch us because of slow play ahead and the Marshall advised not to let them through but was not ideal having players behind waiting and players ahead slow!
Didn’t like the bleached grass on fairways.
It's a few years since we last played this course and we were amazed at how much it has improved. It was in excellent condition and had a very well cared for appearance. The free drink was a welcome touch.
Amazing golf course on an amazing resort. Loved every minute. Although Your golf travel messed up our tee times with them, so we were double booked (not golf course’s fault). They managed to organise very quickly, ended up playing back 9 first. Highly recommend this course, will definitely be back.
Great golf course. Was presented with a free drinks token on arrival which was a nice touch. Had to pay for the range, which I think could be included given the money spent to play. Would definitely play here again
Quite simply stunning. An open links style course with a number of greens in reach in regulation for the average player. The greens were superb and fast with many undulations making them tricky but so enjoyable. A modest clubhouse with the biggest of welcomes with free pencils, tee pegs, logo-ed pitch mark repairers and two first drinks. A “must play “ !
The South course was newly reopened after annual maintenance. As a result it wasn’t perfect with some aprons and sections of fairways in stages of recovery. The greens were generally fine albeit slower than expected. We played as a two ball every day (3) so wasn’t overly busy. The course is quite challenging and interesting with a devilish par three over water on the back nine especially into a strong breeze !
This for us is the best out there at the moment, each hole offers an individual challenge and has something to offer as you stand on the tee. Perfect condition as usual everything is spot on. Greens never let you down.
Overall, a great experience.Relatively lower grades on facilities because they are limited in scope, but basically that is needed cf Kingsbarns. As to value for money, games in the Algarve are relatively expensive, hence the grading. We were a two ball and the course was fairly busy with three and four balls, although we got round in under four hours; we did wait to play most shots. Thought course was in excellent condition, staff very helpful and clubs the latest - as usual, no senior shafted clubs - a perennial issue for me and a general one at all of these courses.
We enjoyed the course very much. It was in very good condition and the surrounding area was lovely. Overall it was a pleasure to play on it and so we changed the booked round at Laranjal to play it again! The food in the club house was very good as was the overall service of the staff.
Was looking forward to this course but found fairway conditions quite poor with the course over played, greens had been micro tined and slow compared to Laranjal. Back 9 more challenging and interesting. There are quite a few hikes between tees as it's definitely constructed for buggies. Wish we had opted for the south course now for the views .
We were placed directly behind a pro am! We walked off after 9 holes and 4 hours-crazy to allow bookings. A lot of people were unhappy. Thankfully, we were able to rebook for 2 days later and the golf manager was very amenable in providing a fresh round but other people did not have this luxury. This is a great course for mid to low handicappers, greens are fast and tricky. Practice facilities are a short walk from the course and better than the north/south course.
After playing the south course the north course took 5 hours and 10 minutes. After playing the 1st went to the par 3 2nd and found 3 groups on that hole. 4 balls going out every 8 minutes. The entire round had 3 groups on every hole. This affected the rating and would give it thought before booking here.
The course is a good layout and in okay condition with the greens being very good. We are not slow players and had all the warnings from the starter above slow play and how they would act. Took 4 hours and 40 minutes which is pretty slow and no action taken anywhere.

Lago's new North Course is looking radiant after the €10 million refurbishment

much fairer test for the average golfer.
removal of a fair few trees, the fairways have been slightly widened, and you
now get a clear vision of where to aim your tee shots, adding a more forgiving
feel to each hole. The undulations in the greens add to the course's defence

the general flow of the course has been vastly improved and has given the

top course. Booking the 3 round package including Quinta do Lago's North, South
and Laranjal adds the perfect variety to your golfing holiday and will leave
you wanting to come back time after time.
one could stand on the 16th tee all day long, just trying to perfect that tee
shot! An inviting short hole from an elevated tee, with an amphitheatre style
green, this is a real gem and one of many highlights."
Just back from a 4 round golf trip and have to say that Laranjal and the South were the best. The South was absolutely perfect, only slight niggle was that the greens were a little slower than expected but simply would play this course again and again, the verandah for a drink afterwards is really nice with the price of a pint a little high around 5 euros. Laranjal for us was the best of the lot. The layout of the course is great and felt the service from the staff excellent, we decided that we could easily play here every day on holiday.
Just returned from our holiday playing the South and Laranjal at Quinta do Lago and really look forward to returning. Laranjal is a slightly wider more modern layout which requires length off the tee, the large greens ensure that you'll have some long putts on some of the best greens I've ever played on. The South is easily one of the best I've ever played, we play here every year and just wish I could play it every day. The course is always in great nick and the undulations make the course a very enjoyable test. Would give these courses 5 stars each.
