Rio Real Golf Club

Measuring 6,741 yards from the championship markers, Rio Real was designed by Javier Arana, and provides a great test of golf for even highly skilled players, without ever overwhelming the average golfer. The front nine holes are certainly the tougher, with the tight fairways bordered by banks of beautiful trees.

Patience and accuracy are crucial here, but on the closing stretch you can open your shoulders and be aggressive with the driver from the tee. The stunning landscape makes Rio Real a memorable place to play, especially the 4th and 5th holes, which run adjacent to the famous Costa del Sol, affording amazing views of the coastline.

Signature Hole: Hole 4, Par 4, 386 metres, SI 4
This hole turns into a real challenge when the Marbellan sea breeze picks up. A beautiful hole too, and the golfer is greeted with a spectacular sea view when reaching the green. However, there is much to do until then, with a slight dogleg left from the drive, followed by a lengthy approach shot to a well protected green, with bunkers to the sides and rear. A visually stunning hole, and a draw from the tee would suit this hole well, setting up a less lengthy approach shot.

Favourite hole: "Really nice par 4, elevated tee and a brook to cross to reach green, this was followed by a lovely par 3 with lake to left of green."


My caddy tip: "It would be easier to play second time round, but would advise caution off most tees as narrow fairways and on par 3 most greens well surrounded with trouble."

This is one of our favourite courses and we’ve played it every year since 2007. Last year the condition of the course was fantastic however this year May 2026 was a big disappointment. Some tees were poor in terms of condition and repair, others weren’t level, run off areas were worn out. Greens full of pitch marks but putted okay however every green was ringed (300mm) of a different type of course grass - completely different from the green and apron. The 10th green was particularly bad, in fact the hole location was ridiculous. Not sure if we will return.

O.K. but not happy with the marshal who decided to push us along in an aggressive manner. We were first out on the course and he decided to chase us up on the 14th! One 4 ball behind followed by a three ball and four two balls! Our finish time was 4hrs 45 minutes which from experience is about average for Spanish courses particularly as one group had never played the course before.

Watch out for the storm water levees they are sometimes invisible when playing but are a straight lost ball as strict no go zones and thread through entire course. Nice warm up course.
