Golf Courses at Slaley Hall
The Hunting Course is the superior layout at Slaley, and has been recognised for many years as an official PGA Tour venue, having hosted the Great North Open. Dave Thomas' design measures over 7,000 yards from the championship markers, and has some formidable holes. The course winds its way through towering trees and banks of beautiful rhododendrons, and golfers will be faced with many different challenges, where shaping the ball and being creative is certainly an advantage.
The signature hole of the resort is the Hunting's 9th, a tough par-4 where you must thread your drive between the monstrous trees on the right, and the meandering stream that skirts the left of the fairway. After a good tee shot, golfers are still left facing a long uphill approach shot to a severely sloping green, on what is one of the best par-4s around.

The Priestman is the second course at Slaley Hall, but it should not suffer an inferiority complex. Designed by PGA Chairman Neil Coles, this is a great addition to the resort, making it one of the few to have two genuine championship courses. Opened in 1989, the Priestman has matured into a tournament venue, with some superb holes, and also fantastic panoramic views across the Tyneside Valley.
Slaley Hall's extensive practice facilities offer visiting golfers the perfect chance for some tuition to sharpen up their skills.

Fantastic..only downside no real ale....
From arrival onwards, staff were helpful and attentive. The rooms were well appointed and comfortable in every way. The facilities catered for everyone's needs and offered lots of variety. The only criticism would be that the furnishings and the food in the Claret Jug, where we ate left a lot to be desired and could easily be brought up to a standard worthy of the rest of the hotel.
Booked 3 weeks prior to trip and requested 2 buggies for both rounds as my father in law has 2 hip replacements and struggles to walk course . Upon arriving at pro shop 45 minutes prior to tee off was told no buggies available as there was a corporate day and I quote “it’s been booked months and there’s nothing I can do” to cut a long story short was told in an abrupt tone that it’s up to my agent to request buggies and they hadn’t and if I wanted to wait until 11:00 am (it was 9:15 am at the time) there might be some available. For a 4 star hotel the staff both in pro shop and clubhouse could do with some customer service training . Hotel, rooms, food and golf courses lovely but staff not great unless your a big corporate booking I guess .
The hotel is a 3* not 4*, Very worn ok for a boys golfing weekend.
Hotel lacks character for me and has a corporate feel
rooms were OK, standard hotel rooms. food was only adequate not up to 4 star quality.
Value was good as this was a golf deal. Hotel in parts looks a bit tired especially the seating in the golf bar. Food good, staff friendly but service average at best.
Drinks expensive. Better with discount applied, but don't give you it unless you ask.
Lovely hotel, courses were in great shape.
Hotel is a bit dated and in need of updating. Service from staff was dissapointing. Food is very expensive for what you get. Room view was excellent
Top hotel with lovely staff, made us feel very welcome.
definately return again
Hotel fantastic rooms etc the 20% discount on drinks had to ask for it every time we went to bar it wasn’t done automatically drinks were very expensive overall we had a great time.
Fantastic break for all of us.
This location ticks every box great facility excellent food fantastic golf or for less than £100 unbelievable value.
Hotel accommodation and staff service very good - well deserve a 4 star rating and good value for money. Free use of their Spa facilities is a real bonus - best Spa ever used.
We particularly liked the separate snug rooms (between Hadrian's Brasserie and the bar) where you could sit quietly with a drink. We believe a games room somewhere in the hotel would be a good addition with a snooker and/or pool table and a table tennis table perhaps. We found all the food and drink of a high quality, however we would like to see a wider selection of beers available. There was a choice of just 3 lagers and 2 ales across all the restaurants and bars.

Great course with challenging holes. Bunkers were very disappointing with little hard packed sand
Interesting course with a few nice holes. Bunkers were very disappointing with little hard packed sand
Another great course...
Again a great course in superb condition which was only surpassed by the amazing views. Very different to the Hunting which made the weekend even more enjoyable. Again a lack of toilets for the ladies would be the only criticism. The round was slow due to a group in front of us who were late off and not moving as fast as they could until the course marshall intervened and they sped up.
Whilst I was unable to play, I walked with all groups taking photographs. Everyone whilst finding the course a real test found it extremely enjoyable. They all complimented the conditions, from tee to green which were impeccable. Only downside for the ladies was a lack of toilet facilities.
good test of golf
Course has matured well since my previous visit
see comments re Priestman course. buggies are expensive, we paid £35 and were then forced to play another £15 to play 9 holes in the afternoon.
course was fine, but the greens were not up to standard yet - being this far north and 1000 ft high the greens were not at their best. if visiting this course suggest end of May before a visit.
Another almost great course. Hilly with some longer walks between green to tee. As per my huntings review greens not their best , so with totally grassless areas with grooves yet the green keeper puts the hole next to it when there’s a massive green part empty. Again all bunkers need at least 3 inches of soft sand applying to them.
Great location and weather always helps. Course could be amazing just let down by grooves in the greens after treating leaving them gritty and very bumpy in parts and sand in all bunkers solid with no give.
Greens better than priestman
Greens had recently been scarified and were slow and a little unpredictable.
Greens were poor
Beautiful course Excellent condition Very testing
Very hard course for me.
My round was not good, that was my foult
Not just as pretty as the Hunting but quite a nice course. Greens had been hollow tined but were still more than acceptable. Very long course but quite open fairways.
Absolutely stunning course in fantastic condition, greens perfect fairways tight and to say we arrived 2 days after storm Gareth no standing water or debris anywhere to be seen.
Unfortunately a 4 ball infront of us were not experienced golfers and really shouldnt have been allowed on this championship course! We were a visiting party from Otley GC of 7 a 3 ball and 4 ball playing in a group comp consisting of mixed handicaps 8-22 The group infront did wave us through and we were left waiting on every tee and approach shots .
Played off yellow this time a bit hilly but not too bad
Played off back tees quite long
An outstanding golf course with varying degrees of difficulty it offers high reward for risk, good Bertie opportunities combined with very difficult long path falls. Situated in stunning surroundings it was a real pleasure to play a course in such good condition in the middle of October.
The course layout is above average with the fairways tea boxes and general length of grass from fairway second cut to rough or on point. However the greens in particular were very poor and were probably suffering as a consequence of a very long hot summer however there were too many bare patches with long grass making the ball jumping around. The bunkers were not in very good condition either with very inconsistent amounts of sand. But all in all playing with five friends it was fun And we would most certainly play the course again.
Excellent course for regular golfers in very good condition. Wonderful views all around.
A very good test of golf for regular golfers with good layout and picturesque scenery and views.
very challenging course. for many holes you have to hit very big and quite accurate off the tee to give yourself any chance of making the green in regulation. The course definitely got the better of my friends and I, but we enjoyed the challenge of playing it all the same.
Fantastic course. We found some holes quite sheltered and others very exposed to the wind. Good range of challenges to contend with across the 18 holes. good variety of length of holes.
