Designed by Donald Ross, the man behind Oakland Hills and nearby Pinehurst No. 2, Southern Pines is one of those courses that looks straightforward on the card then keeps asking questions as you go. It began life as a nine-hole layout before becoming a full 18 in the early 20th century and it's now widely regarded as one of the standout tracks in the Carolinas.
The routing makes the most of the Sandhills terrain, with springy fairways that can run for miles on a warm, breezy day and greens that sit up proudly above their surrounds. Ross's trademark crowned putting surfaces mean you cannot just aim at the middle and hope, you'll want to find the right section of the green or you're suddenly negotiating a testing two-putt. Bunkers are positioned with purpose, more about tempting you into the wrong line or leaving a poor angle than simply punishing a miss.
If you enjoy proper, old-school golf architecture where placement matters as much as power, Southern Pines fits the bill nicely. It still feels like a classic Ross test, with strategy and angles at the heart of the challenge. The course rewards tidy ball-striking and smart course management, especially when the wind picks up on the more exposed holes.
Who is this for?
Golfers who want to experience a genuine Donald Ross design in the heart of North Carolina's Sandhills, combining strategic challenge with classic architecture and a relaxed, traditional club atmosphere.
Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who value course design and strategic play over length alone, plus anyone planning a Pinehurst-area golf trip who wants to add a top-quality Ross layout to their itinerary.

Measuring a little over 6,300 yards from the tips, Southern Pines is by no means a long golf course but that certainly doesn’t detract from the enjoyment and challenge experienced during a round here.
Tight, undulating fairways are lined by towering pines and dogwoods which demand accuracy from the tee. Greens are small, devilishly tricky and are well protected by bunkers meaning precision is also called for from the fairways. The layout here bears the marks of a bygone era, where the holes are short but wonderfully crafted, allowing for a great range of shots to be played.
This is not target golf like many modern American courses but a course that demands the golfer to be creative and use their full repertoire of shots; a truly enjoyable round of golf awaits any golfer embarking on a golf holiday in North Carolina.
