Tucked into the Oxfordshire countryside just outside Wallingford, The Springs Resort & Golf Club is an easy-switch-off kind of place, golf at the core but with enough around it to keep everyone happy. You've got an 18-hole parkland course, strong practice areas and a proper spa for the post-round reset. If you're travelling with non-golfers, or you fancy a change of pace between rounds, Oxford is close enough for a simple day trip, think museum stops, riverside walks and a wander around the colleges.

The resort itself feels calm and countryside-led rather than flashy. Golfers will like the fact you can actually work on your game here, not just turn up and play, thanks to the indoor swing studio with GC Quad, indoor putting studio and the outdoor range and short game area. Add in the 1893 Spa and you've got a solid UK golf break option for couples, small groups and societies who want golf plus a bit of comfort. The spa is popular, so it's worth booking your slot early, especially at weekends.

Who is this for?
Golfers after a countryside break that combines a solid parkland test with genuine resort facilities, couples looking to pair golf with spa time, and groups who want quality accommodation, good food and a base for exploring Oxfordshire.

Who is it best for?
Mid-handicappers who enjoy a strategic, tree-lined parkland course, anyone valuing strong practice facilities and post-round relaxation options, and visitors wanting easy access to Oxford's culture and history alongside their golf.

The Springs Golf Club

The original design of the par 72 golf course was by former Ryder Cup captain Brian Huggett in 1998. Darwin Escapes put significant investment into updating the golf course by hiring leading course architect Tim Lobb to work in consultation with Huggett. The work concentrated on the bunkers and lakes, improving their placement, appearance, and aesthetic appeal.

The course now features well-manicured fairways, strategically placed bunkers and water hazards plus large, undulating greens. It also offers a mix of holes that are both challenging and forgiving, making it enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels.

The signature hole is the 8th. A par 3 over water, which often has varying wind conditions to consider. Golfers will require anything from a mid-iron to a wood to reach a green that is not only surrounded by water, but also has bunkers covering any bail out.

Accommodation at The Springs Resort & Golf Club

Accommodation at The Springs Resort & Golf Club spans luxury guest rooms and suites through to self-catering apartments and lodges, giving you flexibility depending on group size and how you like to travel. The rooms and suites suit short stays and couples' weekends, especially if you want everything on-site with minimal faff. They're smartly turned out, modern without being clinical, with flat-screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi as standard. Several rooms feature balconies or terraces, some looking out over the golf course, others taking in the surrounding countryside, which is particularly nice if you're an early riser who likes a coffee before heading to the first tee.

If you're travelling as a family or a larger group, the self-catering apartments and lodges make more sense. These come with full kitchens, separate living areas and multiple bedrooms, so you've got space to spread out and the option to cook for yourselves if you'd rather not eat out every night. For societies or groups who want a bit more privacy and the ability to sit together after dinner without taking over a hotel lounge, the lodges work well. You can sort your own breakfast before heading out, keep your own schedule, and generally have a bit more control over the trip.

The rooms with golf course views are worth requesting if you're booking early, particularly if you're the sort who likes to watch the first groups go out in the morning while you're getting ready. The countryside views are equally pleasant, just a different vibe, more about the rolling Oxfordshire landscape than the immediate action on the fairways. Either way, you're in a quiet, rural setting that feels properly away from it all, which is half the point of a golf break like this.

For groups, the mix of accommodation types means you can keep everyone together on-site even if some want hotel-style service and others prefer the self-catering route. It's a practical setup that works for golf societies, extended family trips, or a mix of golfers and non-golfers who want their own space but still want to be part of the same trip.

Guests can dine at The Ridgeway Restaurant, the clubhouse hub for food, with golf nods in the décor and a terrace that's well worth grabbing in summer. The menu focuses on quality ingredients, well-executed dishes that suit golfers who've worked up an appetite without straying into overly fussy territory. In the warmer months, the terrace becomes the natural choice, letting you sit outside with views across the course and countryside while you eat. It's the kind of setting that turns a good meal into a proper occasion, especially after a satisfying round.

The 1893 Spa is the post-round treat, with a relaxation pool featuring underwater ceramic beds and a small seating area that lets you properly unwind. Trained therapists are on hand for a full range of treatments, though availability can be tight so booking ahead is essential. The spa adds a layer of luxury that lifts the resort beyond a straightforward golf break, making it a genuine retreat for couples or groups who want more than just 18 holes and a pint. There's also a fitness centre if you want to keep active, but most guests are here to slow down rather than speed up.

Location-wise, you're well placed. Wallingford is a charming village, worth a wander if you've got time, and Oxford is close enough for an afternoon or evening visit. The university city offers world-class museums, stunning architecture, riverside walks and enough history to fill several days if you're inclined. It's an easy add-on to a golf break, giving non-golfers in your group something substantial to do or providing a cultural counterpoint to your time on the course.

The hotel bar and restaurant were good. However our accommodation in the chalets were very hot, we did not have aircon, and we happened to stay there over a very hot weekend. A fridge in the room would also have been to to keep our drinks cold. Saying that the room was very clean and the shower was great.

Nice stay in separate lodges near the course and near the bar

Great first visit here for the RRGS Society Course in top nick, staff were excellent and an easy recommendation!!

The facilities were really good but the staff didn’t appear to want you there which was disappointing. It was the final day of the PGA championship but the spikes bar was closed in the afternoon and no access to any TVs to watch it, there was a sign placed on the bar at around 20:00 saying “last orders 21:45, time at 22:00 and doors will be locked at 22:15” and ordering drinks appeared to be an inconvenience to the bar staff

Had a wonderful stay at The Springs. Buffet breakfast was ok, evening meal was great. Nice bar/restaurant and the staff were excellent. Rooms were fine, had everything we required. Would recommend.

Nice accommodation in the lodges, modern and clean. The only issue we had was the lack of booking in information. Our keys were in the bar! Not the reception so a lot of confusion.

It was perfect, helped by the weather, staff were friendly & accommodation was just what was required on a golf trip

We had 14 stay here for our society trip. We were well looked after from start to finish. The lodges were great for our needs, comfy and clean. The food and drink was decent too.

Staff were great. Accommodation was nice, comfortable. Bar hours on a Sunday was early at 10.30 and when we finished our round on Monday at 4, there was no hot food available

the rooms and clubhouse were very nice and in great condition but the staff were unhelpful (especially the man in the office) and quite grumpy. Breakfast was nice and the bar choice was good.

It was quite a slow round, but like I said above, we stayed there over a very hot weekend, so we expected the play to be slower than usual. There was a marshall on course who offered cold drinks, which we appreciated.

There was a seniors match in front of us which was comprised of 3 x 4-balls and they must have been playing for a very prestigious trophy as they were so slow and the first group ended up being 3 holes behind the tee time in front of them, but no Marshall was out to speed play

Some very interesting holes. Good length course. Greens were true and quick. Will be back next year.

Well laid out course in nice condition. The only gripe is with the trees on the fairways on holes 1 & 18, just couldn’t see the point on them and found it a little annoying.

Nice course, not too demanding, lots of water. Perfect for a golf tour. I definitely recommend it.

The course was not long off the yellows but had some interesting holes and plenty of OB which made us question the low slope index. We all enjoyed the layout and would definitely come back again.

Good

Course was reasonable. A bit short off the yellow tees. Teeing areas were not in good condition, mainly sand Greens were good and true.

Poor
2.0

We wanted to play from the White tees but we told in a very rude manner (the booking did not state this and we chose the course on these as the yellows were quite short) that they were for members competitions only. Tee boxes were awful in most cases fairways were poor and greens were very bumpy, unkempt and unplayable to a good level in most cases. Driving range was for irons only and chipping areas were as poor as the on course facilities
