Set in beautiful rural woodland close to the Derbyshire and Cheshire border, Stockport is an 18-hole parkland course that plays to a par of 71. Originally designed by 1902 Open Champion, Alex "Sandy" Herd, the layout was later extensively renovated and improved by the legendary Harry Colt, contributing to its enduring quality.

The course is gently undulating and free of deep rough or significant water hazards, allowing golfers to focus on strategic play. However, the terrain is far from flat, featuring a few slopes, subtle dips, craters, and a pronounced "gulley" on the opening hole, which adds unique interest to the round.

The fairways are of good width, but precise approach shots are demanded by the attractively bunkered and well-presented holes, particularly the signature par-3 8th, which is stoutly defended and warrants special attention. The challenging 463-yard par-4 1st hole sets a formidable tone, requiring a precisely placed drive to avoid the steep bank and big dip that run across the fairway.
