This Suffolk gem is heathland in style, and though not long - measuring 6,432 from the tips - is a fantastic test. Visiting golfers will be charmed as the layout winds its way through silver birch and pine, gorse and heather, in a fashion reminiscent of the world-renowned courses at Sunningdale and Woodhall Spa. The sandy soil gives Thorpeness a superb links accent, while the course's quality has been recognised with the award of a number of regional, national and international tournaments.
The charming Suffolk landscape makes for a delightful setting, while on the course itself Braid has created a great variety of holes. Some of the best are the signature 3rd, where a good drive is the key to negotiating the sharp dog-leg right, the short 7th, where a poorly-struck iron will disturb the lilies that cruise the lake, and the terrific closing hole, which demands two great shots to find the green, under the watchful gaze of the famous windmill.

Just ten minutes' walk from the beach, Thorpeness Hotel keeps things traditional in the best way: friendly service, comfortable rooms and an easy, relaxed feel after your round. There are 30 guest rooms, each with views over either the Meare or the golf course, so it's a lovely place to wake up on a golf weekend.
Rooms are comfortably furnished rather than flashy, with en-suite bathrooms and tea and coffee facilities. When it's cold outside, the lounge is the place to head, with open fires and plenty of space to settle in with a drink. Staff are friendly and helpful and the food is excellent. Accommodation possibly feels a little old and tatty but is clean and comfortable and as the overall location is so charming it all has a nice feel. I might not choose to stay here purely for the hotel if I wasn't also golfing but putting the two together is an experience I have enjoyed more than once and hope to do so again in the future

A group of 8 stayed for 2 rounds with an overnight stay. All the party praised the facilities within the hotel. The choice we had for the evening meal was superb with options for all tastes.The food was fab witn no one complaining !The staff serving were super with nothing a problem. The bar area was very good along with the serving staff, again nothing a problem. Breakfast was great, also with a great choice on offer. The rooms were comfortable and spacious with space to store golf clubs etc.

Due to a couple of dropouts we ended up being a 2-ball but the pro shop manager got us off early and we had 2 rounds where we had no hold ups and no pressure from behind, in fact on Sunday we got around in 3 hours (unheard of these days). Considering the recent heatwaves the course was playing well, greens were excellent and it was nice to play a course without huge undulations, so didn't feel too exhausted after each round

Book your buggy early if uou need one . We played Saturday and sunday and the speed of play was good . Greens are great fairways having same issues as rest of country due to no rain . That said We played in torrential rain on Saturday.. hahaha

The thick gorse bushes that line almost the entirety of every hole make recovering lost balls from a bad hook or slice nigh on impossible, and bunkers are strategically placed to offer maximum inconvenience in a number of cases but its a lovely course that's enjoyable to play with an interesting layout. I would suggest that 12-14 on the back nine have a slightly same-y feel but other than that the course is varied, characterful and interesting. If, like me you're not a good golfer (36HP) then as long as you come prepared to lose a few balls and don't expect to get your best score ever you will enjoy yourself

At the time of our visit as with alot of the country there had not been any significant rain so the fairways were running very fast and hard . The greens were in good condition considering the lack of rain recently but were being irrigated regularly. The wind was blowing quite hard which made for some interesting shot selections! Staff in the pro shop were friendly and accommodating allowing the group to tee off slightly earlier than booked. Overall a great experience on a great course. I rated the course hard due to the conditions at the time of our visit.
