Golf Courses at Trump Turnberry, a Luxury Collection Resort 5*
With views across the dramatic West Coast of Scotland and out to the Ailsa Craig, both golf courses at Turnberry are rightly considered to be amongst the most picturesque in the world. Firm, fast-running links turf, cavernous pot bunkers, penal rough and treacherous gorse bushes are the hallmarks of seaside golf in Scotland and the experience at Turnberry is about as natural and Scottish as it comes; you’ll even be serenaded by a lone bagpiper if you time your tee times just right.
As a host of 4 Open Championships and countless other prestigious golf events, the Ailsa Course is rightly seen the jewel in Turnberry’s crown and following the unveiling of dramatic design changes around the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse, one of the world’s best has just got even better. The newly opened King Robert the Bruce might sit in the shadow of the mighty Ailsa, but it’s a top class and equally challenging layout in its own right, boasting just as spectacular views and challenging golf.
Throw in some of the best and most comprehensive practice facilities in the UK, and all the ingredients for an unforgettable weekend of links golf are in place.
Ailsa Course - Par 70/69 - 7,357 Yards
The Ailsa Course at Turnberry has hosted 4 Open Championships, a couple of which are among the most memorable in the tournament’s long and exalted history. Who could forget Tom Watson coming so close to lifting the Claret Jug at the age of 59 in 2009, or his legendary “Duel in The Sun” against Jack Nicklaus at the 1977 Open, which many believe to be the finest major championship ever staged?
Turnberry’s star attraction has long been recognised as one of the world’s most spectacular courses and while nobody of sound mind has ever doubted its quality, there were some who felt that it wasn’t quite reaching its full potential; until now that is.
Following recent changes to a number of holes on the Ailsa, most notably from the 4th onwards, the Ailsa now makes full use of its stunning location, with the most significant change coming in the form of the new 9th & 10th holes. Formerly a solid pair of par 4s; recent changes have seen this famous duo which sit in the shadow of the Turnberry Lighthouse transform into 2 of the most spectacular holes in the world. The 9th now plays as a par 3, where the tee shot must be struck over the bay towards a newly sited green beneath the Lighthouse, while the 10th now plays as a par 5, sweeping around Castle Port Bay towards a green perched precariously closer to the water’s edge.
With subsequent changes to the 11th in place too, creating yet another awe-inspiring par 3 along the rugged coastline, the most famous stretch of the Ailsa Course has finally had its full potential realised, both from a design and aesthetic standpoint.
Having caught your breath after such a spectacular stretch of holes from the 4th to the 11th, the Ailsa begins to take you back towards the magnificent Turnberry Hotel which sits perched high on a hill overlooking the links. You’re not done yet though, with the final four holes presenting as demanding a test as any.
The 15th now plays from an elevated tee offering panoramic views of Turnberry Bay, while the 17th, formerly a par 5, now plays as a par 4 before the final hole with its dramatic new tees located on the beachside dunes takes golfers back to the solitude of the clubhouse. Whether you’re planning your first trip to Turnberry or you’re a seasoned guest, one thing is for certain; the Ailsa Course in its newly improved guise must be seen to be believed.
Par: 70 (Championship), 69 (White & Yellow) & 75
Designed by: James Miller (redesigned by Mackenzie Ross and most recently by Mackenzie & Ebert)
Opened for play: 1902 and reopened after Mackenzie & Ebert redesign in 2016
Previously hosted: The Open (1977 Tom Watson, 1986 Greg Norman, 1994 Nick Price, 2009 Stewart Cink),The Senior Open Championship (7 times) and the Women's British Open (2002 & 2015)
Awards: #1 golf course 2011 - Going for Golf Magazine, #1 UK golf course 2010 - Today’s Golfer & Golf World Magazine
Championship Tees: 7,357 yards
White Tees: 6,663 yards
Yellow Tees: 6,250 yards
Red Tees: 5,769 yards
Signature Hole: Hole 9, Par 3, 235 yards (Championship Tees)
The 9th tee has always been one of the most famous points on the Ailsa Course but that was largely due to it being a photo opportunity beneath the Turnberry Lighthouse, with Turnberry Bay in the background, rather than it being a world class golf hole. That has all changed thanks to the recent Mackenzie & Ebert redesign.
The 9th now plays as a par 3, which measures 235 yards from the Championship Tees – further tee positions allow less skilled players to play from more manageable positions closer to the green – and with the green set adjacent to the Turnberry Lighthouse on the far side of a rocky bay, this stunning corner of the Ailsa Course has finally fulfilled its amazing potential. After completing the 9th, golfers can take a breather and enjoy a cup of coffee in the Turnberry Lighthouse which has been transformed into arguably the finest halfway house in the world, before taking to the new par 5 10th, which certainly gives the 9th a run for its money in the race to be the Ailsa's Signature Hole.
King Robert the Bruce - Par 72 - 7,203 Yards
While the Ailsa is undoubtedly the star turn at Turnberry, the newly opened King Robert the Bruce is set to rival it, providing visitors of Trump Turnberry with yet another incredible golfing experience at one of the world's most iconic destinations for golf.
A series of key features are evident in the new design including the par 5 1st hole with its split fairway divided by central bunkers, distinctive with marram grass eyebrows in contrast with the perfectly manicured revetted greenside bunkers found across the course.
Completely new holes have been created at holes 8 and 11, now transformed into brilliant par 5's with an unforgettable view out to sea as well as the iconic Turnberry Lighthouse, the focus for the 11th tee shot.
The closing hole, a demanding par 5 with a well protected green and approach located beside the Clubhouse.
Black Tees: 7,203 yards
White Tees: 6,594 yards
Yellow Tees: 6,299 yards
Red tees: 5,767 yards

Trump Turnberry, a Luxury Collection Resort 5* Reviews
I would just like to say a big thank you for arranging our stay at the Turnberry Golf Resort; it was everything that I could have imagined.
The food was excellent and the service impeccable throughout the hotel. Our upgraded room was stunning with beautiful views out to the sea and over the golf courses.
Sam loved the golf so much and while he said he found Ailsa course really challenging, he was in heaven all the same.
The spa facilities were amazing and I really enjoyed my time to relax.
It was well worth the money and just what a 5 star hotel should be with something for more than just golfers.
Truly first class.
Just returned from a break at the Turnberry Resort and have to say it is the best golfing break we have ever had. We played both the Ailsa and Kintyre courses on a Your Golf Travel special offer including bed and breakfast which was excellent value for money.
The golf courses are brilliant (they can get a bit tough in the 30mph winds we played in!) and it really is a great experience to play the famous holes we've seen at The Open in past years.
The hotel was also amazing with incredible views across the golf course, out to the sea and beyond. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful either and could not do enough for us.
There’s a good choice of restaurants so you could have an
affordable meal or really splash out on something special in the 1906. We’d
definitely go again!
There is no point in trying to describe experiencing Turnberry to the full over a couple of sunny spring days. This place is beyond words.
On the way back home, we tried to capture the pleasure of playing golf on two superb links courses, the relaxed hospitality, the iconic landscape, and I feel I must stop here or this will become a very long list of superlatives!
We can’t wait to arrange a return and we’d whole heartedly recommend this place to anyone who loves golf.
Turnberry’s location was great and the booking process was simple, with all our needs catered for efficiently by YGT.
Both golf courses were amazing and while Dundonald Links was also good, it’s not quite of the same standard.
The hotel at Turnberry is also excellent with the only gripe
would be the price of food and drinks. However this is still a must play venue
for all golf lovers.
We enjoyed our trip to Turnberry very much. The Ailsa Course was superb and although The Kintyre course was good and certainly worth playing once, I would not be overly bothered about playing it again and would rather pay more and play two rounds at The Ailsa as it’s one of the best courses I have played.
We also played at Prestwick which was excellent and vastly different from anything I have played before. Thanks again to yourgolftravel.com for all the assistance with the trip.
I can honestly say that my group of 8 from all over England had an unforgettable break last week at Trump Turnberry. It was a break of contrasts.
The first day we all drove or flew up, then on the second day we played on the Ailsa Course in beautiful weather - shirtsleeves in November which we couldn’t quite believe! The course was in good condition, except for 3 temporary greens which were in place due to course modification for next year’s Women’s British Open. The weather was kind but the course was playing long due to earlier heavy rain. Despite this, scoring was pretty good, with several birdies enjoyed by all.
We also played the Kintyre Course which was in great condition, but the weather was the foulest most of us had ever played in, with high winds and pouring rain throughout. Obviously that made it a real test for us and for our waterproofs, most of which failed the test! I think we were the only people on the course but despite the weather, the course held up remarkably well.
The hotel was excellent as always. The rooms were fine, the staff were all very helpful, particularly in helping us deal with the bad weather, and the meal on the first night was exceptional, if a little expensive. The bar was also pricy, but that's what you expect from a top class hotel.
On the last two nights we ate at Wildings Restaurant in nearby Maidens – a 2 minute taxi ride – and we’d recommend this whole heartedly for anyone looking to save a bit of money on dinner and drinks.
Thanks for the package put together by everyone at yourgolftravel. We felt that overall the break represented very good value for money.
Turnberry is now probably my favourite overall venue in the UK.
Overall I would give the break 8 out of 10, spoilt only by
the dreadful weather on one day.
Breathtaking and stunning were the words used by all 7 of us having breakfast in the Turnberry Hotel while overlooking the Ailsa course, Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. Our tour concluded at this amazing resort having played Prestwick previously.
The Ailsa and Kintyre courses could be played time and time again thanks to their truly spectacular views, stunning layouts and a great clubhouse. The members of staff were superb throughout the resort and the hotel was undoubtedly 5 star. Use the Spa as it’s one of the best I have seen and great place to wind down after a day on the links.
The only criticism of the Hotel would be the high prices of
the food and drink. Whilst not too over the top, it did mean we went out
for supper on the last night.
I would like to thank YGT for the superb golf break at Turnberry, the Alisia is probably the best course we have ever had the pleasure to play and this was when it was wet and windy; a true golfing test with breathtaking views. The Kintyre is also a credit to the resort however a number of bunkers were GUR while we were there which was a shame.
As someone who arranges a number of golfing events for my company I will certainly use Your Golf Travel again. Everything was well organised from the moment we booked.
First of all I would like to thank Your Golf Travel for organising a truly memorable golf break at the Turnberry Resort. Both the Kintyre & Ailsa courses were in great condition for the time of year & luckily the weather gods were with us as we had two days of sunshine and hardly any wind! Even though we played the course in gentle conditions the higher handicappers in the group struggled on the Ailsa thanks in large part to those devilish pot bunkers!
We found the prices in the clubhouse very reasonable considering the value for money you get on the break as a whole, and seeing as we were at one of the top venues in the world...the view from the terrace was one of the best we had ever seen!
The staff in the pro shop were great and made us feel really relaxed prior to tee off...always nice when you’re heading out onto such a demanding golf course! They supplied us with course planners free of charge & told us where to pick up our free range balls. All in all the golf side of Turnberry is top class...a well oiled machine to say the least!
The hotel is fantastic too, and with food to match! All the lads said that the beds were the most comfortable they have slept in. In fact...this was probably the best hotel any of us had ever stayed in!
Thanks again for booking our golf break...we can’t wait to book next year’s trip and will certainly be doing so with Your Golf Travel. Carnoustie here we come!
We had a fantastic time on our long awaited Turnberry golf break. The weather was brilliant on both days which was not expected! Two days of sunshine in Scotland in November = amazing!
Both the Ailsa and Kintyre course are great layouts and were in mint condition, even this late in the year. Although it may have been a different story if the weather had been less kind, neither was overly difficult and would be manageable, or at least enjoyable, for the majority of golfers.
Free use of the driving range for a warm up, complimentary course planners and goodie bags were all very nice touches indeed and added to the overall experience.
Golf courses aside, the resort is simply stunning and we were very well looked after during our golf break. The hotel is splendid, food impeccable (best cooked breakfast I've had), rooms were big and spacious, and all staff members were extremely efficient and welcoming. My overall verdict would have to be 10 out of 10 as this was probably best hotel I have ever stayed in and the Ailsa Course was certainly the best golf course I have ever played!
I think the views just give it the edge over Gleneagles which is also pretty special. Your Golf Travel’s service was perfect, as is the norm. The speed of response and efficiency have always been excellent and this golf break was no different.
I have recommended YGT to many of my friends already and will continue to do so as I can’t see your product or service being topped by anyone else! Thanks again for a great memory...I'll always remember my 330yd, wind assisted drive on the 7th!
Turnberry proved to be the perfect location for a special 40th birthday golf break. There was a kilted Scotsman on the doors of the elegant hotel to take our bags and the fire in reception was very welcoming. We were upgraded to a sea view room which overlooked the golf course and we could watch the green keepers going out at first light whilst snuggled up with a cuppa in the enormous super sized bed!
The comfortable room was eclipsed by the bathroom with its stand alone bath, heated floor and fantastic overhead rain shower. Each evening a Piper played at the front of the hotel while we enjoyed a pre dinner drink. Dining was pricey but not prohibitively so and having got a great deal on the accommodation we didn’t begrudge this one bit, especially as the staff were so friendly. The food was top class as well so actually the food was good value for money.
We were paired with another couple on the Ailsa Course which was not only a sociable way to play the round but also provided the chance to reminisce about the great golf course we had just played. The goodie bag on the first tee with a course planner and metal bag tag was a nice touch too!
We had no wind to contend with so the course was manageable even for a higher handicapper like me, although I would recommend staying out of the bunkers! The best views were on the Kintyre Course. The light house and rocky outcrops along the coast were as picture perfect as any promotional literature we’d seen and all in all our Turnberry golf break was one of the very best we have ever been on. Turnberry certainly lived up to its mighty reputation.
The hotel at Turnberry is excellent and makes for a great base for a weekend of golf in Scotland. The clubhouse grill in particular has a great atmospehere – and really good steaks!
As for the golf; the Ailsa was fabulous from start to finish and everyone agreed it was one of the best we have played. We were lucky to get to play it on a lovely afternoon without a breath of wind which was fantastic. This is a truly great course and its little brother, the Kintyre was no push over either!
What a weekend!
Thankfully I played some of my best ever golf around the Kintyre and shot 5 over gross. I wasn't so great the next day on the Ailsa but a comparitively poor score still couldn't detract from what is an amazing golf course...what a day!
There wasn't a breath of wind in the air nor a cloud in the sky the whole time we were there so we count ourselves very lucky indeed to have been able to enjoy such a special place in such blissful conditions.
Will be with you again as usual when booking our next trip and would recommend a trip to Turnberry for anyone with a love for the game of golf.
I would like to thank you and everybody at yourgolftravel.com for the great golf break at Turnberry. We just got back it was brillant. The Kintyre Course is lovely and as for the Ailsa, it's everything it's cracked up to be and more. Thank you again. We will be back!
Just a quick one to tell you that we had an absolutely fantastic time at Turnberry. The two days we spent there were awesome, with excellent weather adding a bit of gloss to an already incredible pair of golf courses. The hospitality from the staff and the quality of the hotel and its facilities were all much more than any off us could have wished for and as we left we immediately started thinking of next year and how we would like to visit this fantastic resort again.
My husband and I had a fab time time at Turnberry so thanks to YGT for all the help with the arrangements. Luckily the weather was perfect - very cold but sunny almost the whole time - so we really got to appreciate the amazing scenery up here in all its glory. There were two showers which lasted about 5 mins each (one was hail stones though and it hurt!!!) but I suupose we can't hold you guys responsible for that!
The hotel is fabulous and the golf courses are top class. So he tells me anyway...I was in the spa in full relaxation mode so couldn’t care less!
Thanks again for being such a great company to book through – I will definitely use Your Golf Travel again and would certainly recommend Turnberry for golfers and non-golfers alike.
Everything on our golf break to Turnberry went very much to plan - no problems at all! The weather was fantastic for the time of year and as many golfers will know, Turnberry is one of the best venues in the world for a golf break. The Ailsa Course speaks for itself but the Kintyre is a great golf course in its own right and the perfect warm up for the main event!
Both golf courses are perfectly complemented by the fantastic hotel and, if you haven't already tried some, a pint or two of St Mungo is highly recommended.
Thanks go to Your Golf Travel for all the arrangements and please keep me informed of any good offers you have going forward, particularly for golf in Scotland.
