West Hill Golf Club sits in Surrey's heathland belt near Woking and it's exactly the sort of place golf fans mean when they talk about "proper" Surrey golf. Expect springy heathland turf, heather that will punish anything loose, and corridors of pine and silver birch framing rolling fairways. It's peaceful out there, but don't mistake that for forgiving.
The club has been here for well over a century and you feel it as soon as you walk into the clubhouse, a handsome period building with that old-school members' club atmosphere, minus the intimidation factor. The course has naturally evolved over time, but the identity hasn't shifted. It's still a strategic heathland test that rewards placement and a bit of patience.
West Hill is a cracking choice if you want heathland golf that's scenic, strategic and taken seriously. If you're planning a Surrey or London-area break, it works brilliantly for groups and societies who want tradition and a serious round, with the reassurance of a well-run club. Just go in expecting classic heathland golf rather than target-golf heroics. Keep it in play and you'll enjoy it far more.

West Hill is a classic heathland course which has regularly ranked within the Top 100 lists in the UK and Ireland. The layout was designed by Cuthbert Butchart in 1907 with Hunstanton and West Byfleet being among his other designs.
Towering pines line the course which is routed in an out and back fashion with the Brookwood brook coming in to play on six of the holes. The heather has been allowed to flourish on the course which coupled with many strategically placed bunkers provides a good challenge to all levels of golfering abilities. Strategic play is key to playing well here while the greens have some of the most difficult natural undulations you will ever play.
West Hill has a range of excellent facilities for golfers, including a well-stocked pro shop, practice range, and putting green. The clubhouse also features a bar and restaurant where golfers can relax and socialize after their round.

Probably the prettiest course I’ve played. Can thoroughly recommend it. A real treat to play striking the balance between risk and reward. Very friendly clubhouse and would revisit anytime. Only slightly odd thing was that the green staff were watering some of the greens in the middle of our round. Not seen that before!!
