Ardglass Golf Club sits on the north-east coast of County Down, less than 30 minutes from Belfast and handy for Slieve Donard, Newcastle and Royal County Down. Established in 1896, it's a true clifftop links that clings to a dramatic stretch of shoreline, with the Irish Sea visible all the way round and very much in play on eight holes.

Expect firm, running fairways, plenty of natural movement underfoot and a steady coastal breeze that can shift club selection by a couple of clubs on a blustery day. The greens tend to run true and quick, with subtle breaks that reward a confident stroke. Miss in the wrong spot and the wind can turn a simple up-and-down into a scramble.

The standout feature is the clubhouse, set in a historic stone building widely regarded as one of the oldest clubhouses still in use. Add in clifftop tees, rugged rock edges and constantly changing views across the water and you've got a County Down links experience without the crowds of the headline names. It's an ideal half-day trip from Belfast and a cracking warm-up or wind-down round on a Royal County Down itinerary.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want authentic Irish links golf, big sea views and a course that feels traditional from the first tee to the post-round pint.

Who is it best for?
Single-figure and mid-handicap golfers who enjoy playing in the wind, plus societies and groups wanting a brilliant add-on round alongside Royal County Down.

Ardglass Golf Club

Golfers are totally at mercy of the elements as the layout straddles the rugged cliffs above the churning waters of the Irish Sea. The opening five holes make up the most amazing start to a round; resisting the wind and the incredible views are the main challenges of the cliff-top layout.

Founded in 1896, Ardglass is unfussy and traditional, where the emphasis remains on the quality of the golf course, not pandering to wealthy visitors. A warm welcome is assured, and there are a number of holes that will live long in the memory - the short 2nd and the par-5 11th are amazing, while the views from the 12th tee are extraordinary.

Ardglass is a simple concept, where the golf course merely reflects the remarkable character of the land. If you are making the pilgrimage to the golfing landscape of County Down, make sure you include the remarkable links at Ardglass, one of the best layouts in Northern Ireland.

Saw Ardglass on YouTube and wanted to play the course. I had very high expectations and I wasn’t disappointed. Simply stunning course and location. Opening holes along the sea, and holes 9,10 and 11 were awesome. I had a great round with 3 guys from Northern Ireland, who were welcoming and good fun. Food after our round was high quality as well. In summary, brilliant.

An amazing golf course, the opening holes along the cliffs and the 11th along the beach are incredible. The tee shot on the 2nd hole (the swirling ocean mists descended just at that moment) will live long in the memory. Everyone needs to play Ardglass nce.
