South Ireland Golf Tour

We recently headed to Cork and the south of Ireland to review the golf properly, not just tick off a few headline names. Over a few days we played the courses, tested the practice facilities, stayed in the hotels and sized the whole trip up from a golf group's point of view. We went out to do the legwork properly: play the courses, stay at the properties and see what actually works for golf groups on the ground. That means better advice for you, with none of the brochure gloss.
What we found was a destination with real variety, from polished resort golf to one of the most dramatic rounds anywhere in Europe. A couple of stops are absolute must-plays, while others are better suited to the right type of group. The result is a destination we would happily recommend for anything from a society tour to a mixed-ability break, with Old Head delivering the wow factor, Fota Island offering the easiest all-round package and Cork Golf Club standing out as the sleeper pick of the trip.
Who Is This For?
This itinerary suits golfers who want variety in a short space of time: a bucket-list round at Old Head, a polished resort option at Fota and the flexibility to stay either in the countryside or right in Cork city. It works especially well for society groups, captains' trips and mixed-ability groups who want one marquee round without making every day a slog.
If your group wants dramatic golf, easy logistics and good food and drink off the course, Cork is one of the most compelling tour bases in Ireland. Stronger players will love Old Head and Cork Golf Club, while Fota Island gives the trip balance for mixed handicaps.
Type: Parkland
Holes: 27
Best for: Suits all abilities
Buggies: Electric but no sat-nav fitted
Fota Island makes an immediate impression. The clubhouse is a substantial building with a well-stocked pro shop carrying all the major brands and an outdoor pizza oven that tells you this place caters for more than just golf. The 18th green finishes into a pond behind the clubhouse, which makes for a brilliant spot to sit and watch groups come through after your round.
On the course itself, Fota Island is a parkland layout that suits all abilities. A wide range of tee markers means players at every level can find a comfortable game, and while the tree lines tighten on a couple of holes, the course never becomes punishing. The par 3s with water add a welcome edge of drama without turning the round into a card-wrecker. Our pick for the signature hole was the 10th, a long par 5 that drops downhill with water providing a striking backdrop. It is the kind of hole that looks intimidating from the tee but rewards a sensible line off the fairway.
What makes Fota work so well for group trips is the balance it strikes. It is challenging enough to keep better players interested but forgiving enough that higher handicappers will not spend the afternoon searching for balls. For a society trip or a mixed-ability group looking for a course everyone can enjoy, this is about as well-suited as it gets in the south of Ireland.

The practice facilities here are impressive. The driving range is set up as a full academy and the putting green is enormous. If you want to arrive sharp and shake off any travel stiffness, build in 30 minutes of range time before your tee time. It is well worth it.
For groups staying on site, the communal areas in the lodges are a real bonus. There is no need to head into Cork city every evening if you do not want to. The resort has enough going on to keep everyone happy, and Cork city is only around 20 minutes away when you do fancy a change of scene.
Practical Notes
Buggies are electric and available but carry no sat-nav, so pick up a course planner from the pro shop before you head out. The bar offers a solid selection of drinks on tap for post-round, and the outdoor pizza oven near the clubhouse is a nice touch for groups who want something casual after 18 holes.
Drive times from Fota to Old Head are around 45 minutes and Cork Golf Club is roughly 15 minutes away. For a 3-night or 4-night tour using Fota as a base, you can comfortably fit in all three courses without any difficult logistics.
The lodge accommodation at Fota Island is excellent and one of the better group setups we have seen at an Irish resort. Entry is through a gated community with key card access, and the quality of the lodges themselves is high throughout. Each lodge sleeps four golfers across a single, a twin and a double room, and the downstairs communal area is a real asset for groups who want to spend time together after the round rather than retreating to separate hotel rooms.
Dinner on site was relaxed and enjoyable rather than formal, and breakfast was a real highlight of the stay, among the best we had all trip. The food operation here is better than you might expect from a resort of this type, and it shows.
For non-golfers, the resort offers an indoor pool, outdoor pool, hydrotherapy pool, spa and gym, making it one of the more well-rounded options for mixed groups and families. If someone in your party is not playing every day, they will not be short of things to do.
For golf groups, Fota works best as a full resort base rather than a one-night stop. The lodges, the facilities and the course all reward a longer stay, and the proximity to Cork city means you are never stuck for evening options.
Type: Parkland
Par / length: 72 | 6,192 yards
Best for: Mid to Low Handicap
Signature hole: 5th hole - 578 yard par 5
First impressions at Cork Golf Club do not give the game away. Walk around the clubhouse to the pro shop, however, and the quality of the course becomes clear immediately. The stripped fairways are a visual statement of intent. This is a parkland layout with real character and quirk, and it quickly became one of the team's favourite rounds of the trip.
Mid-handicappers and lower will have a great time here, though confident higher handicappers will still enjoy the challenge if they are prepared for a proper test. The course has enough variety to keep better players fully engaged from the first hole to the last. Fairways are tight in places, the bunkering is well-positioned and the routing makes clever use of the land in a way that keeps you thinking throughout.
Cork Golf Club is the sleeper pick of this itinerary. It does not have the profile of Old Head or the resort infrastructure of Fota, but it is a better course than many visitors expect and the kind of place that rewards those who seek it out. If you are building a Cork tour and want one course that feels like a proper insider recommendation, this is it.

Do not let the members club setting put you off. The atmosphere in the clubhouse is warm and entirely unpretentious and the food here is well regarded locally, among the better options we came across in Cork. It is well worth staying for lunch or dinner after your round rather than heading straight back to your accommodation.
If you are combining Cork Golf Club with Fota Island on the same trip, play Cork Golf Club first. It sets the tone for the kind of variety this destination offers and gives you a proper test before the more resort-friendly experience at Fota.
Signature Hole
The 5th hole is the pick of the card, a demanding par 5 with water running all along the left-hand side that drew a comparison from one of our team to a flipped version of the 12th at Kingsbarns. It is the kind of hole you talk about in the bar afterwards, which is exactly what you want from a course like this.
Practical Notes
The practice facility is located at the back of the course and tops out at around 150 yards, so it is not a full driving range. Manage expectations on the warm-up and use the putting green to get your eye in instead. The course is a relatively easy walk despite some uneven ground on certain holes, and walkers will find it manageable across 18.
Cork Golf Club sits around 15 minutes from Fota Island and is easily combined with either accommodation option reviewed here. For groups staying at the Imperial Hotel in the city, it is even closer and makes a natural first-day round before heading further afield.
Type: Cliff top links
Par / length: 72 | 7,150 yards
Buggies: Available on cart paths only
Signature hole: 12th hole - 564 yard par 5
Old Head is in a category of its own, and nothing quite prepares you for it. The drive up to the clubhouse, with cliff drops on either side of the approach road, sets the tone before you have even seen the first tee. The clubhouse itself is tucked into a hillside, meaning the first thing you see on arrival is the golf course and the lighthouse beyond it. The views are simply stunning, and that is before you have hit a shot.
Old Head is not a traditional inland parkland course in any real-world sense. It plays as a dramatic clifftop links-style experience, with constant sea views, exposed holes and the kind of setting you remember long after the score has gone. Wind is a factor on almost every hole, and the routing takes full advantage of the headland, sending you out along cliff edges and back through exposed stretches where club selection becomes a genuine conversation.
This is a tough course best targeted at mid-handicappers and better, but our team's view is clear: no golfer of any ability should pass up the chance to play here if it is within reach.
Buggies are available but restricted to cart paths only, which is worth knowing before you arrive. The course is a serious walk in places, particularly in wind, so factor that in when planning your day. That said, walking it adds to the experience. You feel the exposure more on foot, and the views from certain stretches of the course are worth every step.

Signature Hole
The 12th hole is the signature moment, a huge par 5 running along a cliff edge with a small green tucked close to the drop. It was one of the most memorable holes of the trip, and one our team will be talking about for a long time.
Practical Notes
Build extra time into your arrival. The journey up to the course and the setting around the clubhouse deserve to be absorbed properly, not rushed. Give yourself at least 30 minutes before your tee time to take it all in, use the practice facilities and get your head into the right place for what is coming.
Check the forecast before you go. Old Head in a stiff south-westerly is a very different experience to Old Head on a calm day, and both are worth playing. If you have flexibility on timing, a morning tee time often gives you the best of the light and slightly more settled conditions before the afternoon wind picks up.
From Fota Island, Old Head is around 45 minutes by car. From the Imperial Hotel in Cork city, allow closer to an hour. Either way, it is a straightforward drive and well worth the journey.
Castlemartyr Resort is a smart, higher-end base for the area and a good fit for groups who want a proper resort feel without being in the middle of Cork city. The suite we stayed in was well laid out, with a bedroom containing two double beds, a large TV and a desk, plus a separate dressing room and bathroom off the main corridor. Standard rooms are more than comfortable for golfers and well set up for those travelling with full kit.
The resort offers a whiskey room, a casual dining bar, a main restaurant and relaxed food in the clubhouse. The quality across all of them is solid, and the variety means you are not eating in the same room every night. For evenings when you want something different, the hotel owns a pub at the bottom of the grounds and the concierge team can arrange transport there and back. Given that the hotel is fairly remote, that in-house option matters more than it might at a city property.
Non-golfers are well catered for with an indoor pool, spa, wellness facilities and a gym, making Castlemartyr a workable option for mixed groups where not everyone is playing every day.
For golf groups, Castlemartyr works best as a quieter, higher-end base rather than somewhere for late nights. If your priority is a smart resort feel, good food and an easy drive to multiple courses, it does the job well. It is not the right fit for groups who want to be in the thick of the city after golf, but for those who want to decompress in comfortable surroundings, it is a well-suited option.
Drive times from Castlemartyr to the courses reviewed here are manageable. Fota Island is around 20 minutes, Cork Golf Club is around 25 minutes and Old Head is roughly an hour. It works well as a base for a 3-night tour covering all three courses.

The Imperial Hotel is the pick for groups who want to be in the city. Located just 15 minutes from Cork Airport, it puts you in the heart of Cork with restaurants, bars and everything else within easy walking distance. For groups who want to make the most of the city after golf, this is the more natural fit than a countryside resort.
Rooms feel smart and spacious, with high ceilings that give the space a sense of occasion. The deluxe rooms are worth the upgrade, particularly if you are travelling with full luggage and golf bags to manage. Two single beds are standard for golfers sharing, which works well for most group setups. The restaurant and café on site cover everything from a full sit-down dinner to a quick sandwich before an early tee time, and there is even a private area where groups can gather for a presentation or a debrief from the day's golf.
The one practical note is parking. The hotel has no on-site parking, but an NCP car park is a five-minute walk away. For groups arriving by car with golf bags, factor that into your arrival plan.
If your group wants bars, restaurants and a proper city atmosphere after golf, the Imperial is the better fit than a countryside resort. It is especially handy for short tours where you want to stay central and keep logistics simple. Cork Golf Club is around 15 minutes away, Fota Island is around 20 minutes and Old Head is roughly an hour, so you are not giving up much in terms of drive times by staying in the city.
