Founded in 1888 and later redesigned by the legendary Dr. Alister MacKenzie, Cork Golf Club delivers old-school golf in a superb coastal setting. You can see MacKenzie's fingerprints in the way the hazards ask questions rather than simply punish, with clever bunkering, natural movement in the land and greens that reward a committed strike and a sharp read.

It's a regular host of national amateur events, which tells you plenty about the standard of the test. Being on the coast, wind often plays its part, so bring a knockdown shot and a flexible mindset. The routing makes the most of the elevated ground, serving up big sea views and a handful of holes where the breeze will have a say in your scorecard.

What you'll notice is the variety, each hole asking a different question without feeling tricked up. Expect greens that can be quick when conditions are up, with subtle breaks that make pace control key. Play to the right side of the fairway, leave yourself the best angle in and you'll get your chances. Get greedy in the wrong breeze and you'll be scrambling.

Add a welcoming clubhouse and that relaxed Irish post-round feel, and Cork is well worth building into a south coast itinerary.

Who is this for?
Golfers who enjoy classic design, sea air and a course that rewards plotting your way round rather than swinging out of your shoes.

Who is it best for?
Confident mid to low handicappers, golf societies and history-minded golfers putting together a Cork or south coast itinerary who are happy to take on breezy conditions.

Arrived with a group of 16 wanting breakfast. But the Kitchen was closed. But the Chef made us bacon butties. Brilliant. The course is one of the best I’ve played. The Clubhouse classy and clean. The members and staff were so friendly and helpful. Will be returning.

A real hidden gem, we arrived early before the clubhouse and kitchen opens, in typical "Irish Hospitality" style the club secretary jumped behind the bar to serve us coffees and some other black stuff that's quite popular out there and arranged for the kitchen to be opened early so we could eat, all this during a midweek club competition for the members.

An superbe old fasioned golf designed by the great Allister MaKenzie. The whole club is full of history. Unfortunately the weather was very bad and we had to stop our round. There is a renovation of the course ongoing and the new bunkering is excelend. I hope to come banck and play the course in normal conditions. Then the spectacular vieuws along the river and the stonegraves will come to life.
