Broadstone Golf Club sits on heathland just east of Bournemouth and it's been putting golfers through their paces since 1898. Founded by Lord Wimborne as the Dorset Golf Club, the course was originally laid out by Tom Dunn on land beside the old Somerset and Dorset railway line.
The big moment in Broadstone's story came in 1914 when Harry S. Colt arrived to revise Dunn's routing. Colt's touch is still the headline today: strategic angles, clever bunkering and greens that ask you to think rather than simply hit it hard.
Out on the course you'll find a proper blend of heath and parkland, with pine, gorse and heather shaping the look and feel of each hole. It's not a brute, but it is exacting. Miss too many fairways and you'll spend the day negotiating sandy lies, awkward stances and recovery shots that quickly turn a good card into a scramble. If the wind gets up across the more open stretches, you'll need to flight the ball and pick smart targets.
When you're done, the modern clubhouse is an easy place to unwind and replay the round. Broadstone is also a strong addition to a golf tour of the Bournemouth area if you want variety without lots of driving.
Who is this for? Golfers staying in or around Bournemouth who want a classic heathland test without travelling far, plus groups building a Dorset itinerary with a mix of styles.
Who is it best for? Golfers who enjoy strategic golf and want to see Colt's design principles up close. Confident mid-handicappers will get the most out of it, but higher handicappers will still enjoy the day if they're happy to play sensibly and take what the course gives you.

Broadstone is at its best when you treat it as a thinking player's course. From the tee, the priority is positioning. Fairways are framed by heather and gorse in places, so the sensible line often beats the heroic one. Approach play is where Colt's influence really shows, with greens that reward the right angle and punish lazy targets with tricky chips and putts.
The course is a charming blend of parkland and heathland, shaped by Harry S. Colt's 1914 revision of Tom Dunn's original routing. What Colt delivered is a strategic test that has matured superbly over more than a century, earning its place as a course with a strong competitive pedigree at county and regional level.
The layout threads through pine, gorse and heather, with fairways that demand accuracy and greens that require careful reading and a confident putting stroke. Colt's trademark bunkering and green contouring are evident throughout, rewarding golfers who think their way around the course and punishing those who rely solely on power. When the wind picks up, the heathland stretches become particularly demanding, exposing any weakness in your long game.
If you're planning the trip for a mixed-ability group, it's a good shout because the test is mostly strategic. Longer hitters still have chances to be aggressive, but everyone has to keep it in play. In breezy conditions it becomes a different proposition, so pack a couple of extra balls and be ready to club up.
Finish up in the clubhouse for a well-earned drink and, if you're building a multi-course itinerary, pair Broadstone with other local styles to keep the week fresh.

Round was very tough with the wind as well as the slow play. Course was in good condition but again the pace of play was slow. We teed off about 25 minutes late and were always waiting on tee boxes. I’d play this course again but maybe not on a weekend.

Great course and challenge! Early Spring so expected maintenance, therefore greens didn’t run as smoothly as I’m sure they will come April/May. Would definitely return, it beat us up a bit but my daughter off 30+ had a tidy round, so playable for all levels.

Friendly members, immaculate course and excellent halfway house. Despite an explanation from the pro the notorious 7th hole fooled us all with the blind slopes - definitely need to play it several times to get its measure. Very new Clubhouse with good facilities and catering

This was a delight and all we thought it would be. Tight parkland course with lots of gorse and heather. We were also given a free lunch as well as they had done some course maintenance that day and said the greens were not up to their standards......well apart from one hole where there was a light dusting of sand and others that they had lightly pricked, the greens were lovely and of no problem. Great customer service almost for no reason. I would suggest a buggy or an electric trolley if that could be an issue for you as there are some long uphill areas to get to tees and on fairways, but just go. Its one of those courses to tick off your list to play.

Slow front 9 not helped by 7th hole which had a traffic light system but unless you were using the buggy path easy to miss the button to inform folk behind to tee off. Faster back 9 and very pleasant staff

Unfortunately due to weather the green works were delayed however the club were extremely apologetic and as a apology we were offered a free lunch. The green works did not detract from our experience, this is a quaintly course well worth a visit, we will return this summer.

Interestingly there is an underlying rivalry between the membership here and Parkstone, which is noticeable when in conversation with Broadstone members. This does not detract from the challenge that it provides, and again all 6 players expressed their enjoyment of the layout, condition and experience at Broadstone and again our welcome and service was excellent. Another course we all want to return to.

Highly recommend the course and we would play again. Unfortunately the course wasnt booked on the day or tee time originally requested as was changed by Your Golf Travel. It didnt fit with our journey plan or the restaurants we had booked, vital to ensure we could eat as a group. We were greatly inconvenienced and had to change restaurants booked, some we couldnt re-arrange.

Nice course but found it a bit tatty in place's. It's very much a rough and ready course. Not the easiest of walks. The greens were immaculate. Some of the holes were stunning, around five or six of them were very average looking holes. Some of our group really enjoyed it and some didn't. We all have different views I would say give it a go and see.

Beautiful heathland layout and the views were amazing. Some work in progress but that's acceptable at this time of year. Clubhouse was a bit sparse but delicious lunch menu. Very warmly welcomed by all.
