Golf has been played at Crail since 1786 and it's often cited as one of the oldest golf clubs anywhere. The place really started to look like today's Crail Golfing Society when Old Tom Morris laid out the first nine holes in 1895.
What does that mean for your trip? Two contrasting links courses on the same stretch of Fife coastline, with proper sea air, firm running turf and enough wind to keep you honest.
Balcomie Links is the classic out-and-back along the clifftops. It's tight in places, the greens are small, and the gorse is exactly where you don't want it. Craighead Links sits next door and, while it's the newer of the two (designed in the late 1990s and opened around 2000), it absolutely holds its own. It's a touch more forgiving from the tee but asks plenty of questions on the approach and around the greens.
Crail makes a cracking stop on a St Andrews tour. It's close enough for an easy day out, the welcome is refreshingly low-key and you get genuine links golf without the fanfare or price tag of some of the bigger neighbours. If you want variety, you can even double up and play both courses in a day.
Who is this for?
Anyone building a St Andrews itinerary who wants authentic links golf with a relaxed welcome and two courses to choose from.
Who is it best for?
Golfers who enjoy strategy in the wind and don't mind being nudged into the ground game. Great for societies and mixed-ability groups because Balcomie is the traditional test while Craighead is a little more forgiving off the tee.

The Balcomie Course is the original track, and is one of the purest, most traditional around. Located at the tip of Fife's hallowed East Neuk, there is no shelter from the elements at Crail, and the inevitable gales make negotiating the tricky Balcomie a genuine test of skill.
Many holes skirt the golden sandy beaches and rocky outcrops of the Forth's shoreline, and finding them off the tee is a genuine possibility. Negotiating these perils and the devilish pot bunkers littered around the excellent greens will leave a lasting memory on any visitor.

In 1998, Crail was proud to open its second golf course, the Craighead Links. Designed by American Gil Hanse, the Craighead may not yet have the heritage of its illustrious neighbour, but it is a great test, with no two holes facing the same direction. As it matures year on year, its reputation will only grow, and cement Crail Golfing Society's position as a world-class golfing destination.
Pluck up some courage at ‘Hell's Hole', the fifth on the Balcomie, and have a go at carrying the corner where the sea encroaches.

A fantastic course (helped by playing it on a day that wasn't 'too' windy!) and the back 9 in particular was superb in terms of the scenery and the variety of holes, with a lot of thought needed and a lot of different tee and approach shot-making required. Definitely one that goes under the radar a bit, but hugely enjoyable and would thoroughly recommend for anyone who enjoys links golf but also likes something a bit different in terms of layout.

5 hour round due to the 4 ball in front despite them having a caddie.

First time playing Links golf. A great experience. The members said Balcomie Links (closer to the ocean) is even better. Very happy! They have a very nice range!

Match up with 3 players. The holes overlap and balls crossing over to our fairway. At one par four tee off hole, one player tee off from par three hole behind almost hit us.
