It's smart, bright and properly comfortable, the sort of place you're happy to come back to after a tough 18. You're here for the golf, but the restaurants alone are worth the trip, serving some of the finest food in the region. Add in direct beach access, plenty of space to switch off and the level of service you'd expect from a five-star hotel, and you've got a base that works whether you're chasing birdies or just chasing the sun.

Who is it best for?

A serious contender for best course in Portugal, San Lorenzo is a thrilling 18 holes of golf, as it works past lakes, pines and villas en route to the infamous Ria Formosa lagoon.
There are countless spectacular holes, like the third, a par-5 towards the ocean which gets the juices flowing, before the course builds up to a magnificent crescendo with the closing stretch; the 17th is a daunting test, while the closing hole is a the classic ‘risk/reward' hole, where the intrepid golfer must strike a good approach shot to reach the spectacular semi-island green.
The five-star Dona Filipa sits on the edge of the Vale do Lobo estate, right where the manicured grounds meet the golden Algarve coastline. It's been a fixture here for years, and for good reason: the location is superb, the standard is consistently high and the whole operation feels polished without being stuffy.
There are 154 rooms in total, each decorated in a traditional Portuguese style that leans into warm earth tones and natural light. The look is elegant without feeling fussy, classic without being dated. Every room comes with satellite TV, full air conditioning, a safe and a mini-bar. The layout is sensible, the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are well appointed. It's the kind of accommodation that gets out of the way and lets you focus on the golf and the surroundings.
The hotel's main restaurant, Kamal, has quickly become a highlight since opening. Breakfast is a generous daily buffet with everything you'd want before a morning round, while dinner shifts to themed buffets that showcase local and international flavours. The quality is high, the variety is strong and the setting is relaxed enough that you can turn up straight from the course without feeling underdressed.
For drinks, the Duques Lounge Bar is the go-to spot. It's ideal for an afternoon cocktail or a post-round debrief, with a laid-back atmosphere that suits both quiet evenings and livelier group conversations. If you're venturing into Vilamoura, Casa del Forno does excellent Italian, while Ostra d'Ouro Grill at the marina is the place for seafood. Primavera is a handy option for a buffet-style meal and it also does Italian à la carte at lunch and dinner.
Beyond golf, the hotel has two floodlit tennis courts, a swimming pool, a children's splash pool and a range of sports facilities. There are dedicated programmes for kids if you're travelling as a family, and the beach is close enough that water sports and deep-sea fishing are both within easy reach. The Algarve coastline here is genuinely beautiful and the hotel makes the most of it.
Vale do Lobo is 25 minutes west of Faro Airport, making transfers quick and straightforward. The hotel's position, tucked between the estate and the beach, gives you the best of both worlds: access to world-class golf and a shoreline that's worth the trip on its own.

Having stayed in this hotel a number of years ago my friends and I knew exactly what to expect . Whilst some of the areas including the bedrooms we stayed in could be described as being a bit tired or dated they provided everything that we needed. The staff were excellent , most of whom looked like they had worked there for many years were very professional and knew their jobs inside out . The area surrounding the hotel also hits the right note with great places to eat and relax . All in all our experience of the Dona Filipa was very positive and I would be happy to stay there again

All good except bedroom which needed upgrading with no plugs by the beds and a poor shower in the bath with the water not hot.

Hotel Don Filipa was a great option. Very comfortable rooms and the staff are very polite and professional. Breakfast was incredible. Not sure why but dinner was only ok. This isn’t a problem as there are a lot of places to eat nearby and it’s good Vale Do Lobo is a great area!

This hotel has 2 distinctive types of room inrwfurbished(called classic!!) and refurbished. The refurbished rooms are fine(we got upgraded into one)the classic rooms are terrible,me and my wife were originally in one of these with what effectively were 2 very small single beds(old as well) No better than a 2 star hotel, shower in the bath etc no separate shower.Horrible.The hotel bar is dull and badly designed breakfast was ok. I recommend staying at the Conrad as there is more to do outside the hotel and facilities are better,
Check-in is 2pm and check-out is at 12 noon
