Henllys Hall Golf Club

Henllys Hall Golf Club sits on the Isle of Anglesey in North West Wales, with the course wrapped around the historic Henllys Hall. The old monastery buildings give the place real character and when you turn south you're treated to big views towards Snowdonia, with the Menai Strait glinting in the foreground.

This is a course that asks you to think, particularly if the breeze gets up off the water. Tee shots are welcoming enough for a relaxed round, but the best scores come from placing your ball on the right side of the fairway to open up the angles in. Miss your line and you'll be scrambling, with bunkers and slopes ready to kick the ball into awkward spots. The greens tend to roll true and there's enough movement in them to keep you honest without turning it into a putting contest.

After your round, head into the clubhouse for a drink and something to eat, then make the short trip into Beaumaris to round out the day. It's a lovely little town with a famous castle, independent shops, cafés and traditional pubs, ideal if you're building a North Wales break around golf, scenery and a bit of local history.
