Holiday Inn Dumfries

Right, if you're after a straightforward base that lets you rack up proper links and parkland golf without resort prices, Holiday Inn Dumfries does the job nicely. Set in the Crichton Estate on the edge of town, it's a handy launchpad for a Dumfries & Galloway Golf Tour that takes in some of Scotland's best-value golf. Southerness, Powfoot and Silloth are all a short drive away, and they're exactly the sort of honest links tests that reward good ball-striking and a tidy short game. With over thirty courses within easy reach, you can build a week-long itinerary without repeating a layout, and you'll rarely see the crowds that pile onto the more famous names further north.

The hotel sits in mature parkland with views across the estate, offers free on-site parking, and has plenty of twin rooms for golf groups. All guests get discounted access to Neuro's Spa, a two-minute walk away in the estate grounds, where you can soak tired legs in the pool, sauna or steam room for just £3.50. Off the course, you're well placed to explore the region's medieval heritage, from the moated fortress at Caerlaverock Castle to the red-sandstone ruins of Sweetheart Abbey, or take the family to Mabie Farm Park and the 7Stanes mountain biking trails at Drumlanrig.

Expect exposed stretches on the coast and plenty of wind-dependent days, so packing a couple of knockdown shots in the bag is no bad thing. The hotel is around 10 to 25 minutes from most of the local courses, which makes planning your day straightforward, and the bar stays open late enough to let you linger over a pint and a proper debrief once the cards are signed.

Who is this for?
Golfers and groups looking for a comfortable, well-located base to explore the links and parkland courses of southwest Scotland without the premium price tag of resort hotels.

Who is it best for?
Societies, small groups and couples who want variety in their golf, easy access to uncrowded championship courses, and the option to mix rounds with local history, spa time and traditional Scottish hospitality.

Accommodation at Holiday Inn Dumfries

The Holiday Inn Dumfries offers 71 modern, spacious rooms across single, double and twin configurations, all fitted with king-size beds and flatscreen TVs. Twin rooms are plentiful, making group bookings straightforward, and every room is designed with comfort and a good night's sleep in mind, exactly what you need after a long day battling the wind at Southerness or walking the dunes at Powfoot. Many rooms look out over the Crichton Estate, and the whole place has a quiet, parkland feel that suits golfers who want to switch off after 18 or 36 holes.

The Bankend Restaurant & Bar is your hub for fuel and post-round debrief. Mornings start with a full Scottish breakfast, eggs, bacon, sausage, black pudding and all the trimmings, while evenings bring a menu built around local ingredients, including steaks sourced from nearby farms. The restaurant stays open until 10pm, giving you plenty of time to linger over dinner and a pint, and if you want to stretch the evening a little further, the spacious lounge and Bar 59 are ideal for a quiet whisky or two. The vibe is relaxed and golfer-friendly, with enough space for groups to spread out and enough choice on the menu to keep everyone happy.

There's no spa inside the hotel itself, but all guests receive discounted access to Neuro's Spa in the Crichton Estate, just a two-minute stroll across the grounds. For £3.50, you can use the indoor pool, sauna and steam room, a small investment that pays dividends when your legs are heavy after 36 holes. It's a proper facility, not a token add-on, and the walk over gives you a chance to stretch out before you settle in for the evening.

Beyond golf, the hotel is well positioned for exploring Dumfries and Galloway's rich heritage. Caerlaverock Castle, a striking triangular fortress surrounded by a moat, is a short drive south, while Sweetheart Abbey, a beautifully preserved Cistercian monastery, sits just outside town. Families travelling with non-golfers will find plenty to do at Mabie Farm Park, and mountain bikers can tackle the trails at Drumlanrig Castle and the 7Stanes network. In short, it's a comfortable base for serious golf by day, with enough nearby to keep the rest of the group happy once the cards are signed.

Nice breakfast but the drinks are pricey

Hotel location was ideal for our courses. Clean and tidy, staff friendly overall and an excellent choice at breakfast. Only issue was with payment from YGT as I had the receptionist stopping me as we were going out to dinner on the first night demanding to see my confirmation email, that was quite embarrassing hence the lower score.
