Dumfries and County is a private members' club just outside Dumfries that opened in 1912 to a Willie Fernie design. It's a proper Scottish parkland course, tree-lined, gently rolling and more about plotting your way round than trying to smash driver on every tee.

You'll see plenty of mature woodland framing the holes, so it often feels like you're playing into natural corridors. Keep it straight, pick sensible targets and you'll give yourself chances. Miss your lines and the bunkering and subtle slopes around the greens can make up-and-downs awkward.

It isn't long by modern standards, but don't let that fool you. A few doglegs and well-placed hazards mean you'll be hitting plenty of "get it in play" clubs rather than automatically reaching for the big stick. The greens have enough movement to punish loose approaches, so you'll need to think about where you're leaving yourself for the next shot.

After the round, expect a friendly welcome, a well-stocked bar and an excellent restaurant that's ideal for a post-golf pint and a bite before heading back into Dumfries. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuinely welcoming, with none of the stuffiness that can sometimes accompany private clubs.

The club recently hosted the British Senior Ladies Amateur Championship, which tells you it can stand up to a proper test when the pressure's on.

I would describe this course as one you'd need to play again at least once to get the full experience. The first hole sums up the quirkiness of this course perfectly. The course was in fabulous condition though, with excellent greens and the club staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. An enjoyable day, and where it's certainly not the best course you can play in the area, it's different and enjoyable.

Heavy rain the night before made for quite heavy conditions underfoot but the greens were still very good given the time of year. We received a friendly reception in the Pro Shop and bar afterwards.

Dumfries and County was lovely and sedate after our weather affected first 2 days. The facilities were very good, the reception in the pro shop and by the pro himself was very good. The course was in great condition, Parkland with some interesting holes and several testing par 3's. Great greens and lots of sunshine made this a very popular venue. The choice of food was also very good and again the staff were very welcoming.

Front 9 green were superb, the back 9 were being sanded and scored in the morning meaning they were not as the Professional wanted them for us. He did try to contact Your Golf Travel to explain this before our arrival but didn't get a response from. Luckily I contacted them a few days before asking about the bar and food offering, and this point the Professional explained the situation and explained this before our arrival. Slightly disappointed that Your Golf Travel didn't reply back to the Professional but he was superb with us is explaining the situation and what we could expect.
