Lukimbi Safari Lodge

Deep within the southern reaches of Kruger National Park, Lukimbi Safari Lodge sits on the banks of the Lwakahle River. Built across 15,000 hectares of exclusive concession, this is safari at its most intimate, with elephants wandering past your private deck and the Big Five roaming freely across vast, uncrowded terrain. The lodge's position offers immediate, unfiltered access to the African bush, with 123 kilometres of private roads ensuring your game drives feel personal and unhurried.

For golfers, Lukimbi is a bit of a unicorn. You can do the dawn drive, grab breakfast then head to Leopard Creek Country Club for a round on a Gary Player-designed layout that sits right on the edge of the park. Not many trips let you talk birdies at lunch and Big Five sightings at sundowners. The course is close enough to combine with your safari stay without turning it into a full-day mission, with tee times and transfers best arranged in advance.

The lodge itself is small by design, with just sixteen suites accommodating a maximum of 32 guests. That intimacy is part of the appeal. Raised wooden walkways connect the suites to the main lodge, keeping you safe while maintaining that thrilling sense of being deep in the wild. Lukimbi welcomes families with open arms, one of the few lodges in the region to do so, and it's equally well suited to couples seeking a romantic escape.

Accommodation at Lukimbi Safari Lodge

Lukimbi's sixteen suites are spread across two categories, each designed to immerse you in the landscape while keeping comfort front and centre. The fourteen Classic Suites are spacious, open-plan retreats with a split-level layout that separates the lounge from the sleeping area. Swazi-inspired decor runs throughout, warm and elegant without feeling overdone, and every suite opens onto a private deck where you can sit with a drink and watch the river below. The bathrooms are a highlight, with a large soaking tub, an indoor shower and an outdoor shower that frames views of the bush and the Lwakahle River. Fair warning: the outdoor shower has a habit of turning a quick rinse into a full reset.

Air conditioning, pure cotton linen, a well-stocked minibar and all the usual luxuries are standard, but what really sets these suites apart is the sense of space and privacy. Raised walkways connect each suite to the main lodge, giving you safe passage while maintaining that thrilling proximity to the wild. You're never far from the action, whether that's an elephant browsing nearby or a troop of baboons making their way along the riverbank.

For those marking a special occasion, the two Premier Suites, Giant Eagle Owl and King Cheetah, take things up a level. These ultra-luxury suites feature a separate bedroom, a spacious lounge and a private dining area, perfect for an intimate meal away from the main lodge. The bathroom includes a tub built for two, and outside on your deck you'll find a private splash pool, an indulgent way to cool off while gazing out over the African plains. Give yourself a non-driving afternoon here and you'll understand why people barely leave the deck.

Lukimbi is one of the few lodges in the area that genuinely welcomes families, with tailored kids' activities and a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere that makes it easy to travel with children. For couples, the romance is built in, from private dinners in the wine cellar to sunrise game drives where you'll often have the bush entirely to yourselves. Golfers will appreciate the lodge's proximity to Leopard Creek, meaning you can fit in a round without sacrificing time on safari.

Dining at Lukimbi is an experience in itself, with three full meals per day plus all teas and coffees included in your stay. Meals are served in a variety of settings, from the main dining room and open-air deck to the atmospheric boma, where dinner is often accompanied by the sounds of the bush at night. The cuisine showcases local flavours and fresh ingredients, with every dish crafted to make the most of what's in season. For couples, a private dinner in the lodge's wine cellar can be arranged, creating a memorable evening that feels both intimate and indulgent.

Beyond the game drives, the lodge offers plenty of ways to unwind. The main swimming pool overlooks the river and regularly attracts visiting wildlife, making it one of the more exciting places to take a dip. In-room spa treatments can be arranged, allowing you to enjoy a massage with the sounds of the bush as your soundtrack. There's also a well-equipped gym, a library for quieter moments and for families, a programme of kids' activities designed to keep younger guests entertained and engaged with the environment.

The real draw is the safari. With exclusive access to 123 kilometres of private roads, your twice-daily game drives in open Land Rovers feel personal and uncrowded, guided by expert trackers who know the concession intimately. For a different perspective, guided bush walks offer an up-close encounter with the smaller details of the Kruger, from tracks and plants to the intricate workings of the ecosystem. The sheer size and privacy of the concession mean your wildlife sightings are yours alone, a genuine luxury in the world of safari.
