Just across the River Severn in the Monmouthshire countryside, Delta Hotels by Marriott St. Pierre Country Club delivers the full UK golf resort package: two parkland courses on site, a historic manor house setting and enough off-course kit to keep non-golfers happy too. Set across 400 acres, it's a proper escape once you arrive, yet still an easy run for most groups coming from the South West, the Midlands or South Wales.

The golf is the main pull. You get two contrasting layouts, so a weekend here doesn't feel like rinse and repeat. The Old Course is the big name, a strong championship test and former host of the 1996 Solheim Cup. The Mathern is the friendlier option, ideal for a looser afternoon match or anyone in the group who'd rather keep the card intact. Both are classic tree-lined parkland, the sort of golf that rewards good driving and sensible club selection into the greens without asking you to carry forced carries or navigate water on every hole.

Off the course, expect comfortable four-star facilities: an indoor pool and spa area, a well-equipped gym and floodlit tennis courts. When the golf's done, the Cast Iron Bar & Grill is an easy shout for a relaxed dinner, while the Trophy Bar is the natural spot for a post-round pint with views over the Old Course finishing hole. The hotel itself is housed in a striking 14th-century manor, so there's genuine character to the place without it feeling stuffy or overly formal.

Location is one of St Pierre's strongest cards. You're only 25 minutes from Newport and 40 minutes from Cardiff, with easy motorway access from the M4, M5 and M50, making it one of the most accessible parkland resorts in South Wales. The estate's 400 acres mean you're surrounded by countryside once you arrive, but you're never far from a decent meal, a spa treatment or a comfortable room when the golf's done for the day.

Who is this for?
A convenient UK resort break where you can play 36 holes, eat well on site and recover in the spa without overthinking the logistics.

Who is it best for?
Mixed-ability societies, couples mixing golf with spa time, and anyone who wants to tick off a genuine Solheim Cup venue.

Golf Courses at Delta Hotels by Marriott St. Pierre Country Club

Old Course

St. Pierre's Old Course is one of the best parkland layouts in the country, and is a recognised tournament host, having welcomed the top LPGA professionals for the Solheim Cup in 1996. The course has now matured nicely into a genuine challenge for even the best golfers, with some particularly memorable holes.

A round on the old reaches a crescendo with the superb closing two, where visitors must negotiate the 17th green, almost surrounded by an expansive water hazard, and the final hole's difficult elevated green.

Red 5,860 yards SSS 75

Mathern Course

The neighbouring Mathern Course, although considerably shorter than the Old, is an extremely enjoyable layout. It is parkland in style, but players must also tackle the mature trees that provide obstacles on many holes. Opened in 1975, the Mathern continues to delight visitors with some very good golf, and even better views of the surrounding Monmouthshire countryside.

If you fancy a flutter, the race course at Chepstow has regular meetings, and is within a short drive of the resort.

Accommodation at Delta Hotels by Marriott St. Pierre Country Club

Set within a beautifully restored 14th-century manor house, the accommodation at Delta Hotels by Marriott St. Pierre Country Club strikes an impressive balance between period charm and modern four-star comfort. The building's original stonework, high ceilings and classic architecture give the place real character, while inside you'll find spacious, well-furnished guest rooms fitted with everything you'd expect from a Marriott property: quality bedding, work desks and flat-screen TVs.

Rooms are designed with space and comfort in mind, ideal after a long day walking 36 holes across the estate's two courses. Standard doubles and twins are generous in size, while upgraded options include larger executive rooms and suites with separate seating areas, perfect for groups or families who want a bit more room to spread out. Many rooms offer views across the surrounding parkland or towards the courses themselves, a nice touch if you're the sort who likes to study tomorrow's round over breakfast.

Food & Drink

Dining is handled across two main venues. The Cast Iron Bar & Grill serves relaxed, quality meals in a laid-back setting, ideal for groups who want good food without the formality. For something more casual, the Trophy Bar overlooks the Old Course's 18th green and is a popular choice for a post-round drink thanks to the views over the finishing hole. Both venues are geared towards easy, crowd-pleasing resort dining that works well for golf groups, with the Trophy Bar in particular offering big windows that frame the action as groups finish their rounds.

Leisure Facilities

The hotel's leisure facilities are a genuine highlight. The on-site spa, The Beauty Rooms, offers a full menu of treatments including massages, facials, body scrubs, manicures and pedicures, making it easy to recover from a tough round or simply unwind mid-trip. There's also an indoor swimming pool, spa bath, sauna and steam room, plus a well-equipped gym and floodlit tennis courts if you're after something more active between tee times.

For golfers, it's an easy set-up: comfortable rooms, plenty of on-site facilities and two courses that let you build a weekend without jumping in the car between rounds.

Very warm, friendly and attentive staff, without being overbearing or pushy. Very welcoming and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. Whilst it was busy during our stay, I never felt rushed or like I was an inconvenience. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, not snooty or pretentious, which suited our group down to the ground. This was reflected in the guests' demeanour, who all seemee happy and comfortable. I didn't witness any cross words or uncomfortable conversations all weekend. The room was fine - comfortable, clean bed, warm shower, nice and quiet. Perfect to crash after golf and dinner. The food was cooked well to specifications, served in a timely manner and collected in good time too. Exemplary service, keeping the drinks flowing. Breakfast the following morning was the same, well drilled staff keeping the hot food well stocked. I have been to other places where breakfast feels rushed and stressful. My breakfast experience here was calm, spacious and pleasant, with plenty to choose from and something for everyone.

The staff were all friendly and attentive. Although well appointed, the rooms were small and not really big for two sets of golf cluvs and trolleys. It took 20 minutes to get served a drink after our round on the Friday.

No conditioning made the room virtually inhabitable. The water pressure was do low that it didn't reach your body. The drinks are very over-priced, which is standard but still feels like opportunistic profiteering. The food was OK, but a limited menu, clearly designed to be easily reproduced with little expertise.

A lovely hotel and the staff were wonderful. However the room was starting to show some signs of wear and tear which did not detract from the overall stay but was noticeable.

Absolutely brilliant. The resort has everything a group of golfers needs for their trip. Two great Courses, rooms were lovely & clean, good food & bar area great for a few beers. Only disappointing thing was it poured down on Tuesday so we got soaked. Better on Wednesday & Thursday was nice & sunny. Can't blame anyone for the weather though. If only we'd booked for this week. My group have been several times to St Pierre & its a great resort. We will return in the future. And we'd recommend to any golfers. Thanks to YGT for arranging.

As a mid handicap golfer this was a challenging course. Not massively long, but very cleverly designed. Fairways mostly look wide and inviting, but usually have strategically placed fairway bunkers that require careful consideration to either play short of or go big and bomb over. You are usually rewarded for bravery, if you pull it off, with an easier second shot in to the green. However, going off line is often punished with low hanging trees blocking direct routes to the green, requiring big hooks or low punches under the branches to get back into position. Greenside bunkers are excellently kept, deep and challenging. Then, the greens. Soft enough to hold your ball from distance if you play a good shot, but firm enough when putting to be fast and true. Completely opposite to the mathern course which were slow, these greens require an excellent judge of distance. All of our group hit several putts that felt good off the club and ended up ten feet past the hole! Once you get the hang of them they are enormous fun, the best greens I've played on. The holes have different challenges and plenty of variety. It felt less busy and the holes are more spaced out that the mathern, so it feels more private. The 18th tee shot is a big challenge after a long day, but it adds to the drama and fun of an excellent course. Looking forward to playing this course again. Would highly recommend.

It was very busy so we took over five hours to get around which, for a relatively short course, is too long. There are some bottleneck points on the course, short par fours and long par threes, where groups were backed up a little and we had to wait. But, overall, this didn't detract from a good day. The course is well protected by strategically placed trees, making position off the tee very important. I liked the variety, not needing driver off every tee and playing for position, making the course a mental challenge as well as a physical one. It's a course you can't really bully unless you are long and very straight. The greens were quite slow, completely opposite to the old course! I think they could have been a bit firmer and the grass a bit shorter, but the standard of the greens was fine. If you hit good putts you'll get rewarded. I would like to see more yardage markers on the course, and the hole signposting could be better as the course does weave in and out of itself quite a lot, which means it can be challenging to find the next hole! Two groups in front of us accidentally skipped from the seventh to the twelfth, causing a bit of an issue. Some better placed signage would solve this. The fairways are well kept and the drainage is mostly good - there were a few damp parts of some greens but nothing that caused an issue. Overall, this course was a nice starter before the old course. An enjoyable round.

The course is poorly maintained Tee boxes are a mess. The fairways on some holes were not mown. There is not enough sand in the bunkers, the sand that is there has seetled in the bottom of the bunkers. Some of the greens are needing attention, particularly the 9th.

We played 2 roubds on the Old course and were not held up at any stage. The bunkers did not have enough sand, in some instances the matting/linning underneath could be seen. The bunkers are not raked before the start of each day.
