St. Pierre's Old Course is one of the best parkland layouts in the country, and is a recognised tournament host, having welcomed the top LPGA professionals for the Solheim Cup in 1996. The course has now matured nicely into a genuine challenge for even the best golfers, with some particularly memorable holes.
A round on the old reaches a crescendo with the superb closing two, where visitors must negotiate the 17th green, almost surrounded by an expansive water hazard, and the final hole's difficult elevated green.
|Designed by||C.K. Cotton, Ross McMurray|
|Opened for play||1962|
|Previously hosted||Solheim Cup (1996), Curtis Cup (1986),
British Masters (8 times between 1971-83)
|White||7,028 yards||SSS 73|
|Yellow||6,514 yards||SSS 72|
|Red||5,860 yards||SSS 75|
The neighbouring Mathern Course, although considerably shorter than the Old, is an extremely enjoyable layout. It is parkland in style, but players must also tackle the mature trees that provide obstacles on many holes. Opened in 1975, the Mathern continues to delight visitors with some very good golf, and even better views of the surrounding Monmouthshire countryside.
If you fancy a flutter, the race course at Chepstow has regular meetings, and is within a short drive of the resort.

Very good, nice comfortable feel about the place
The dinners was awful & the drinks very expensive - we were very surprised that they keep the same menu all the year round - difficult when there is so little choice and nothing you like on it, breakfast very good
Our room was awful. Down three flights of stairs without lift. Like being down in a dungeon. As a party of six we expected better.
Hotel is old castle so rooms are abit spread out but Nice views out window overlooking course n good selection on the tv. My room sink didn't drain very well
Great stay staff good could do with sorting food menu out better but overall looked after well.
Only thing wrong same menu both days
staff were friendly, accommodating, room was great and facilities were really good. in the context of the package it was extremely good value and would highly recommend for any occasion, not just golf.
Beautiful hotel with very obliging staff and excellent food
Ideal location and great friendly staff.
Hotel and golf beautiful only let down was the restaurant, slow service and food was bland
excellent great staff ideal for golfers and none golfers food great
Set in a lovely location, in its own grounds, with a long history surrounding the old part of the hotel, very welcoming staff. Excellent rooms, serviced each day. Good restaurant the set menu a bit basic and satisfactory. Good facilities pool,sauna,steam room and gym. An enjoyable 4 nights.
Excellent location of hotel. Clean and helpful staff especially in the bars. The restaurant service was a little slow. As we were asked to pre-order dinner for 8pm. We waited until 8.45 to order drinks this was after asking the staff to serve us. Then dinner arrived after 9. Rooms a little dated but clean and comfortable.
excellent accommodation helped by polite and respectful staff
Interesting Checked in ok long walk to room and key did not work!! Walked all the way back with bags and waited to get my key sorted. Long walk back to room. Opened door to find my room occupied!!!! Long walk back to reception and waited to get a new room sorted All in all a total disaster This happened to 3 of our party The Hotel gave a £100 bar tab for our trouble which was appreciated. Other than that a great stay in a great location
The weather was kind to us we had a fantastic round of golf a fabulous meal afterwards and a sound sleep after
THE ACCOMMODATION AND PRESENTATION WERE EXCELLENT BUT THE ONE THING THAT LET IT DOWN WERE FOR ME WAS BEDS WERE LIKE SLEEPING ON CONCRETE.
Couldn’t fault it

Course was in good condition. Hadn’t played it in 30 years and it was really good to play again. Saturday pace was fine unfortunately Sunday I heard they double booked and the front 9 was painfully slow.
It was raining - so very wet. There could be better signage on the course -we fund it difficult to know where we were going - we got lost once!
Condition of a Championship course was not good. Tees full of weeds and daisies. Expected much better conditions from this course.
Expected a better course.
A small course at 5500..yet took 4 1/2 hrs to get round due to society in front. They were very poor n no marshal to get them moving. Not a tough course at all but decent layout...greens much slower than old course.wouldve been more enjoyable if pace of play was better.
Marshall on first tee then nowt on course, after only 3 holes there was one slow group holding up all behind. So slow round. Nice holes are towards the end of back nine.
The course was fabulous And the greens where great quite quick really pleased with course.
Course was ok but a lot storm damage but the lads enjoyed it
Would never want to play it again
Could be very good with a bit of t.l.c
What helped fantastic weather
Good second course
it was a Monday, we didn't play great but better than the day before and the weather was good, saw some sunshine! I wasn't expecting a great deal from the course from what i had heard but i was really pleasantly surprised. the greens although small were true and good, the par 3's were long and a test, the short par 4's have cleverly placed hazard, a couple played very long and overall, despite not scoring great, i thought this was a really good course and would go back. It clearly helped that we had no waiting to do and the pace of play was perfect. The staff in the club house could do with having some lessons from the hotel staff, but the chap who saw us of the first was good fun.
it was a Sunday, we didn't play great and the weather was playable but not fantastic, but unfortunately any round where you have to wait every tee shot and every shot on the course doesn't make for an enjoyable round. the back 9 were really good holes and the greens were superb but in my vies the front 9 has too many holes that are nothing holes and over all it didn't live up to the hype. not sure i'd bother it again over the other course of those near by. The staff in the club house could do with having some lessons from the hotel staff, but the chap who saw us of the first was good fun.
Torrential on last day so did not play
Played from the yellows so although still challenging was a pleasure to play. Outside our own club the best greens in UK
A great challenge and a good contrast to the old course.
Very challenging course.
We played this course twice with 0930 and 0830 starts, nice steady rounds and no waiting at any time, nice course the greens were much better than the old course. A very pleasant place to play.
We played this course 3 times, the first round at 1230 was very very long 5.3/4 hours, this was because we were behind a large group of ladies, 8 x 4 balls, the steward did say it would be slow at the start but not that slow, the other 2 rounds were the opposite starting at 0930 and finished in 3.1/4 hours each time no waiting . We found the greens very slow and bumpy,the fairways needed a cut, talking to a local member he said the standard of the course had suffered due he thought to management cut backs. This 20 handicapper on a first visit to a championship course was able to achieve 35 and 38 points with 2 blobs in each round.
Would not play this course again. It was challenging as it’s a figure 8 and the ditches are almost on every hole which was very frustrating. Never lost so many balls in our lives.
Excellent long course in great condition with fantastic scenery.
great staff in the pro shop. lovely course but greens were very disappointing, too may pot marks that needed repairing. played many championship course and the greens on the two course were well below par, spoilt the trip slightly.
great staff in the pro shop. lovely course but greens were very disappointing, too may pot marks that needed repairing. played many championship course and the greens on the two course were well below par, spoilt the trip slightly. would haver got a much rating if the greens had been in half decent condition.
Good fun but very tight and challenging we all lost ammo but again had a good golf experience
The course was not in the best of condition but we all enjoyed the experience
The weather was misty and cold but that did not matter. We followed a group of 4 lady members off the first tee, which turned out to be a disaster. There was no group that we could see from the 1st tee in front of them, but they still took 2½ hours to do the front 9 without once attempting to call us through. They were a little quicker on the back 9 but the whole round still took 2¾ hours to complete the round. Two of our party were so fed up with waiting for every shot that they walked off on the 10th tee. We did not see a course Marshall all day. We tried not to let it spoil our trip but it was a bit of a pain to say the least.
WE HAVE PLAYED THIS COURSE MANY TIMES BEFORE AND IT NEVER LETS US DOWN FANTASTIC GOLF COURSE WE WILL GO BACK AGAIN.
WE ENJOYED THE COURSE YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT YOUR SHOTS BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT OF TROUBLE ABOUT BUT ON THE WHOLE AND AS A SECOND COURSE ITS GOOD TEST.
Round was slow but that was down to the group in front of us which were part of our party
