Martin's Red

Martin's Red Hotel is in Walloon Brabant and, golfing geek aside, it's a pretty fun place to base yourself if you like your trips with a bit of sporting theatre. The hotel sits on the same site as the Belgian Football Centre, so you're effectively staying at the national team's training HQ. It's widely seen as the Red Devils' home base when the squad is in camp, and if they're around you'll feel it throughout the building, with training pitches in view and a nice sports-set-up vibe from the moment you arrive.

For a golf break, it works because it's straightforward and well geared for groups. You've got modern rooms, on-site dining and a solid leisure set-up, plus you're within easy reach of a good spread of courses across the region. It's also a handy option if you're mixing golf with a bit of Brussels time, or squeezing in a couple of rounds around a work trip. The capital is only a short drive away, making it practical for anyone combining business with a few tee times.

Rooms are contemporary and practical, with smart TVs, USB plugs and air con with individual thermostat control. The hotel's guest gym comes with a sauna and steam room, which is exactly what you want after 36 holes or a long travel day. The Red Sports Bar & Grill overlooks the training facilities and keeps things relaxed, with burgers and Belgian favourites on the menu. Chef Stephan Pivato, a Liege Hotel School graduate with more than 35 years in the business, runs the kitchen and knows what he's doing.

Here are some of our top recommendations: Pairi Daiza - An animal theme park located in Brugelette! So much more than just a zoo!Bois De Halle - Known as the Blue Forest, this is a spectacular place for a walk which looks just like a carpet of blue flowers. Accommodation at Martin's Red

Martin's Red Hotel has six room types, from the Charming Double to the Exceptional Duplex. Across the board you're getting modern, golfer-friendly basics like a flat-screen smart TV, Bluetooth, USB plugs and air conditioning with individual thermostat control.

If you're on a longer stay, travelling as a pair or you just like having a space to spread out, the Exceptional Duplex is the standout upgrade. It's split over two floors and includes a large sleeping area, walk-in wardrobe, study desk, generous lounge area and a full bathroom with shower. It feels closer to a serviced apartment than a standard hotel room, which is handy if you're back late from dinner or you've got an early tee time and someone else is still asleep.

The sporting side isn't just a theme here, it's the setting. With the Belgian Football Centre on site, you'll often see the training pitches from the hotel, and depending on the schedule it's not unusual to spot players, coaches or media around the place. There are two fitness suites, one used by teams and one dedicated to hotel guests. The guest facility is well equipped for a session and also includes a sauna, steam room and relaxation area, ideal for loosening up after a round.

Food and drink is centred on The Red Sports Bar & Grill, which overlooks the training facilities and keeps the atmosphere informal. Expect American sports-bar staples done properly, alongside Belgian dishes such as "Tache Noire" steak and mi-cuit salmon fillet with butter, lime and white chocolate. The kitchen is led by Chef Stephan Pivato, whose CV includes roles at well-regarded Belgian restaurants such as L'Amaranderie and Le Clos Saint Jacques.

If you're not playing 36, there's plenty nearby. Pairi Daiza in Brugelette is a great shout if you fancy something different from a standard zoo, Bois de Halle is stunning in bluebell season and looks like a carpet of blue flowers, and Oud Beersel, founded in 1882 and just 10 km from Brussels city centre, is a top stop for lambic fans and one of Belgium's last authentic lambic breweries.
