Montecastillo Resort is one of those Spanish venues with proper tour pedigree. Jack Nicklaus shaped the course across the rolling hills of Andalucía and it feels like it belongs there, with big-sky views and holes that ask you to think your way round rather than just lash driver on repeat. It's often compared to Wentworth for good reason: Montecastillo hosted the European Tour's Volvo Masters from 1997 to 2001, so you're playing a track that's tested the very best.
It's also an easy win logistically. You're around 15 minutes from Jerez Airport, roughly half an hour from Cádiz and about 15 miles from the Atlantic coast, which makes it ideal for a long weekend or a week of winter sun golf. On-site, the 5-star Barceló Montecastillo keeps everything simple in the best way: comfortable rooms, attentive service and plenty to do when you're not on the course. If you want maximum ease, going all inclusive takes care of meals and drinks so you can focus on tee times and downtime.
If you're travelling with non-golfers or you fancy a day off, the Jerez circuit is close by and the sherry scene in town is well worth a look. All in, this is one of Spain's great golf resorts for golfers who want a bit of history with their holiday.
Who is this for?
Golfers who want a proper Nicklaus championship course and a five-star base that makes a long weekend feel effortless.
Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers up for a tour-venue test, couples who want golf plus spa time and groups who like everything on-site, with Cádiz and the sherry bodegas as a bonus day out.

The highlight of the whole experience at Barceló Montecastillo Resort is the Jack Nicklaus-designed championship golf course. The par-72 is just over 7000-yards from the back tees but with many different teeing options, you’re sure to find a length of course that suits your game so that you can just enjoy your round.
This course is consistently rated in the top ten courses of mainland Europe, a title that is absolutely deserved. One of the reasons this course always ranks so highly is the meticulous attention to detail in the way the course is kept. You will find this course in nothing other than immaculate condition.
The large and inviting greens are fast and consistent with subtle borrows. Water plays a big role in this course and can give you extra-trouble on the closing three holes. You need to keep your wits about you right until the end of the round.
Every hole on this course is special but the highlight is arguably the 16th. It is a classic modern championship hole, it is stunning on the eye. A fader’s hole, this hole gently curves to the right and features fairway bunkers, pine and olive trees on the left and a perfectly-placed water hazard awaiting errant approach shots. Whilst visually pleasing, this is a challenging hole and requires well-struck shots from tee to green.
With a championship course of such pedigree, you would expect the practice facilities to match and they do. The practice area is a great place to warm-up before you head out onto the course or to work on your swing. The short game area gives you everything you need to work on the part of your game that really matters, especially on a course like this that can have such fast greens in the summer months.
The resort also has a pitch and putt facility which has recently been expanded. If you’re travelling with children or new golfers, this is a great place to pique their interest in golf or you could just spend some time here as the sun goes down.
As you would expect at such a venue, buggies are available and are mandatory before 11am. The pro-shop is well-stocked and worth a visit for some souvenirs of your trip to the famous course. This is a world-renowned resort for a reason and its reputation precedes it. It will live up to this reputation though and it will almost certainly exceed it. Don’t miss this golfing experience.
Past winners at Montecastillo include Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood and Miguel Angel Jimenez during the times it was a regular venue on The European Tour.

The five-star Barceló Montecastillo Resort has built its reputation on two things: Nicklaus golf and genuinely golfer-friendly hospitality. The hotel is elegant without feeling stuffy and it's set up well for couples, societies and groups who want everything in one place.
You've got 124 rooms and 20 villas, all finished in a traditional Andalusian style. Room categories include 41 superior standard rooms, 63 superior golf-view rooms, 15 deluxe rooms, three junior suites and two full suites. Air conditioning and satellite TV come as standard. If you can, the golf-view rooms are worth it for that first-coffee look across the course.
The villas are a strong option for groups or families who want more space and privacy. Suites are ideal if you're celebrating or just fancy upgrading the comfort level for the week. The traditional styling, warm tones and careful furnishings give the whole property an authentic Andalusian feel. You're very much in southern Spain.
Food and drink is a big part of staying here. El Lagar focuses on local produce and it would be rude not to sample a bit of Jerez sherry while you're in the region. The breakfast service can include tailored options if you're into wellness or have specific dietary preferences, which is a nice touch if you're serious about performance or just curious about what fuels a good round.
For post-round downtime, the AKADAMA pool bar is the obvious shout. Grab a drink, cool off in the water and swap scorecard stories. When you're ready to properly unwind, the U-Spa offers treatments and a well-equipped fitness area, so you can either recover or keep the routine ticking over between rounds. The spa has been refurbished recently and the facility itself is designed for pure indulgence.
This is a resort that understands golfers. The service is attentive without being intrusive, the facilities are comprehensive and the whole experience is built around letting you enjoy your golf and your downtime in equal measure. It's the kind of place you'll want to return to.

My 10th trip to Montecastillo and once again, service and restaurant fabulous. We took the fully all-inclusive option for additional €22 per night. Some rooms a little tired and air con struggled to handle the temperature.

The best Golf Resort I’ve played in. The facilities so close to each other. The course amazing and a buggy needed for sure. Food was lovely. Highly recommend and we will be back. Amazing value for what we paid 💚

Disastrous! Our tee times were bumped back by 30 minutes and it after that it was the slowest round we have ever played. 6 hours in buggies! Consequently we had no time to stay after as coach driver’s time was up. Some of the course was very scruffy although the layout is good (a buggy is a must though) and greens were good.
