Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is one of those places that makes planning a golf trip almost too easy. You've got a proper resort set-up on Hilton Head Island, three miles of Atlantic beachfront, and three championship courses all in the same 2,000-acre footprint. If you're the kind of golfer who wants to play, eat, sleep and do it all again without spending half your holiday in the car, this is a very strong shout.

The headline for golfers is variety. You can rotate between the Robert Trent Jones, Fazio and Hills layouts and get a different feel each day, which is ideal for a long weekend or a week-long golf escape. Conditions are typically strong here, especially in peak season, and the overall set-up suits groups who want a smooth trip with simple logistics.

Off the course, there's plenty going on for the rest of the group too, with tennis, beach time, fishing and easy access to the island's restaurants and shops. This is exactly the sort of resort I'd pick for a mixed group where some of you want 36 holes and the others want sunshine and a good lunch spot.

Who is this for?

Golfers and golf groups looking for a beach-and-golf combination in the southern United States, with enough course variety to play multiple rounds without repetition. Families and couples who want quality golf alongside resort amenities, plus anyone seeking a warm-weather escape with reliable conditions and easy logistics.

Who is it best for?

Mid-to-low handicappers who want to test themselves on three distinct championship layouts in a single location, and groups or societies who value having everything (golf, accommodation, dining, beach access) within one resort rather than driving between venues each day.

Golf Courses at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

The three legendary championship courses at the Palmetto Dunes Resort have ensured that it is firmly established among South Carolina’s elite golf holiday venues.

Fazio Course

Water hazards and great swathes of sand are littered around the George Fazio course at Palmetto Dunes, but their positioning is far from haphazard; the outstanding design has led many to assert that the Fazio layout is the most demanding test of championship golf on the island.

The course measures 6,873 yards, and is characterised by long and difficult par 4s – the layout is bookended by holes that top the 450 yard mark, so be sure to on your mettle for the entire duration. Fazio’s creation is a joy to behold, and is an integral component of a good golf holiday to the popular resort area of Hilton Head.

Hills Course

The Arthur Hills course is regardedby many to be the finest at Palmetto Dunes, where the designer achieved anadmirable blend of difficulty and aesthetic beauty. Despite being relativelyshort from the championship tees – 6,651 yards – the par 72 is still a goodtest.

Accuracy from the tee and astute club selection are required for goodscoring, while the natural beauty of the surroundings makes it truly memorable. This balanced test is as beautiful as it is enjoyable, which is why it is a firm Hilton Head favourite.

No less than 11 holes are affected by the network of lagoons that is intertwined in the Trent Jones Course, which comes highly recommended by regular golfing visitors to Hilton Head Island. This spectacular course is among the very best in South Carolina, and is guaranteed to be a highlight of your Hilton Head golf holiday.

Accommodation at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

Accommodation at Palmetto Dunes is mainly villas and apartments in one to four-bedroom options, so it works whether you're travelling as a couple, a fourball or a bigger society group. Most units give you far more breathing room than standard hotel rooms, with separate living areas and a kitchen, which is ideal if you like flexible mornings before golf and relaxed evenings back at the villa.

Location varies across the resort, so it's worth choosing based on your priorities. Some properties are closer to the beach, others sit nearer the courses, and plenty are well placed for a bit of both. Depending on where you stay, you can be a short walk or quick drive from the first tee and the beach. The big win is convenience. You're staying inside the same resort footprint as all three courses, so early tee times are straightforward and you're not organising daily transfers just to get to the first tee.

The self-catering setup suits groups who prefer to control their own schedule and budget rather than being tied to hotel dining times. Kitchens are fully equipped, and the layout of multi-bedroom units means you get proper living space rather than everyone crammed into hotel rooms. It's a practical setup for golf trips where you want to grab breakfast early, head out for 36 holes, then come back and sort your own dinner without fuss.

If you've got non-golfers in the group, they won't be short of options. There's beach access, tennis and plenty of ways to fill a day on Hilton Head, plus dining and shopping close by when you fancy heading out. The resort also has convenience shops nearby for basics when you need them.

If you prefer full board and hotel service, self-catering may not be your first choice. For golf groups who want space, flexibility and an easy base for multiple rounds, it's a very practical set-up.
