Tucked into the rolling hills of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Penha Longa Resort sits where 5-star luxury meets centuries of history. This Ritz-Carlton property wraps around a magnificent 14th-century monastery, creating an elegant estate that feels worlds away from everyday life yet remains just a short drive from Lisbon's vibrant streets.

The Atlântico Course is the headline act here, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that's regularly rated among Portugal's best and it's a proper test from the back tees. Off the course, the resort delivers exactly what you'd expect from the Ritz-Carlton name: Michelin-starred dining, a world-class spa nestled in historic gardens, and service that's slick without being stuffy, which is exactly what you want on a golf break when tee times, bags and dinner plans all need to run on rails.

The location is hard to beat. You're positioned perfectly to explore Sintra's fairy-tale palaces, the charming coastal town of Cascais, and Lisbon's culture and nightlife, all while returning each evening to your own private sanctuary in the mountains. From the airport it's an easy hop, which makes it ideal for a long weekend, or a 4 to 7-night trip if you want to mix rounds with a proper look at Sintra, Cascais and Lisbon.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want a 5-star resort base near Lisbon, couples doing a golf-and-city split, and societies who like their afternoons to include a spa, a pool and a serious dinner plan.

Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy a championship-style test and want everything on-site: top rooms, standout restaurants and enough facilities to keep the non-golfers happy too.

Golf Courses at Penha Longa Resort

Atlantic Course

The Atlantic Course is Penha Longa's main attraction, and was designed by the esteemed Robert Trent Jones Junior, the man responsible for so many of the world's top courses. The 6,786 yard course is now ranked as one of the top 30 golf courses in continental Europe, and features many dramatic holes that are cut through the resort's amazing sloping landscape.

The course is divided into two distinct sections, with six holes running through a valley and the remainder straddling the hillside. Penha Longa is consistently regarded as one of the country's top five courses, and was the host for the Portuguese Open twice in the mid-1990s, and the Estoril Open in 1999.

Signature Hole: Hole 6, Par 5, 404 metres (442 yards), SI 18

Penha Longa’s signature hole is listed in the top 500 holes in the world. This beautiful par 5 has a Roman Aqueduct as part of its surroundings. There are many spacious bunkers throughout the hole, and a large lake awaits peacefully towards the left of the green.

Monastery Course

The Atlantic Course may be the star attraction at Penha Longa, but its sister, the 9-hole Monastery Course is well worth a game. The layout is less undulating than the Atlantic, and is certainly not as challenging, but the views of the Sintra mountains are awe-inspiring, and are worth the trip alone.

Accommodation at Penha Longa Resort

The 204 rooms, apartments and luxury suites at Penha Longa reflect everything the Ritz-Carlton brand stands for: understated elegance, exceptional comfort, and service that never misses a beat. Each room is designed as a private retreat, decorated in a sophisticated style that lets the views do the talking.

Step onto your private balcony and you'll look out over either the immaculate fairways of the championship course or the mystical peaks of the Sintra mountains. The attention to detail is evident throughout, from the quality of the linens to the thoughtful touches that make a room feel like home, whether you're here as a couple or part of a larger golf group.

The rooms provide everything needed for a comfortable stay: spacious layouts, modern amenities, and that crucial sense of peace after a long day on the course or exploring the surrounding area. The suites take things further, offering additional space and upgraded facilities for those wanting an extra layer of luxury. Many feature separate living areas, walk-in wardrobes and marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, which is exactly what you need after 36 holes in the Portuguese sun.

What sets the accommodation apart is how seamlessly it fits into the wider resort experience. You're not just booking a room, you're securing access to a complete luxury estate where every element, from the spa to the restaurants to the golf, has been designed to work together. The staff know the course, they know the local area, and they're genuinely helpful when it comes to planning your days, whether that's booking a tee time, arranging transport to Sintra, or securing a table at one of the Michelin-starred restaurants.

The resort's collection of eight restaurants turns every meal into an occasion. Two Michelin stars shine here: LAB by Sergi Arola, where inventive contemporary cuisine pushes boundaries, and Midori, one of Portugal's oldest and most respected Japanese restaurants, delivering precision and authenticity in equal measure.

Beyond the starred dining, Spices brings Pan-Asian flavours to the table with bold, vibrant dishes, whilst Aqua offers relaxed poolside dining perfect for a post-round bite in the sunshine. Whether you're after a multi-course tasting menu, a casual lunch, or a craft cocktail at the bar, the breadth of choice means you'll never eat the same meal twice. For groups, it's a real bonus because everyone can find something they fancy without having to leave the resort.

The 1,500 square metre spa is carved into the resort's historic gardens, creating a space that feels both ancient and utterly contemporary. Inspired by Asian wellness traditions, it features nine treatment rooms, a garden jacuzzi, and a serene plunge pool where you can let the day's tension dissolve.

Indoor and outdoor swimming pools give you options whatever the weather, whilst tennis courts and a fully equipped fitness centre ensure you can stay active between rounds. The resort's position within the natural park makes it an ideal base for exploration, with Sintra's palaces, Cascais' coastline, and Lisbon's culture all within easy reach. If you're here for a week, you'll want to dedicate at least one full day to Sintra itself, the town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the palaces are genuinely spectacular, particularly Pena Palace perched high on the hillside with views that stretch all the way to the Atlantic.

The hotel was fantastic. The gym excellent with lots of machines and space for a work-out. The bedroom was spacious with a lovely balcony. Restaurants (Spices and Arolla) were outstanding - great selection of Portuguese wines although a big mark-up, so expensive. Breakfast - outstanding selection. Outside pool area had stunning views of the surrounding hills however €18 for a cocktail was a lot however not unexpected. Staff were attentive, friendly, helpful and efficient. The hotel itself is set in gorgeous surroundings and wished we had a bit more time to explore.

Because we were a party of 8 we had to pre order our food in the restaurants which was not ideal. The quality of the food was excellent but speed of delivery to the table was an issue which detracted from the experience. The management handled our complaint very well which was appreciated.

Absolutely charming staff couldn’t do enough for us . We were offered an upgrade to a junior suite for a reasonable sum . It was very spacious . Of course brits are finding everything expensive outside the UK but the buffet breakfast would get you through to dinner .

Top quality, large bedroom and lovely public spaces. Staff were very attentive and helpful. The location is superb - except when races are happening at nearby Estoril track.

A lovely, luxurious hotel with really wonderful attentive staff. They are a complete joy. It is set amongst woodland and hills and has delightful walks. Food at the Hotel is excellent though both food and drink are expensive.

Great course in the mountains Unfortunately nowhere to have a drink afterwards for a big group Worst thing overall though was the poor quality of the transfer vehicles for all the courses. This needs to be addressed

Disappointed to play a ‘mixed round’ on 2 occasions. This meant holes 19-27 were pressed into service and although they are fine, it did not reflect the good experience we had the year before when we played 1-18

Good

Overall a disappointing experience - especially when the facilities & service at the hotel are superb. It felt as if the golf course has been left to suffer as the conditions on the course, buggy paths, pro-shop are poor. The staff although friendly seemed to be new to their jobs and struggled to answer our questions. It was hard to find a space on the driving range which did not have divots. There were no markers on the range. The gps software on the buggy was continuously malfunctioning and when we mentioned this to a member of staff we were told that it often does this on a few holes. The speed of play was quick which was probably one of the only redeeming features. The course clearly has a mole infestation as there are holes and raised turf throughout the course.

We couldn’t rent buggies which was quite disappointing but the course is fabulous

Very nice course . Needed buggies. Greens were excellent. Very high summer winds made course very testing.

Course conditions were good, good greens and fairways. Tee boxes a bit battered. No bar for after the round though. Nice posh restaurant that served good, if pricey, food but no space outside to accommodate our group

lovely golf course with great scenery, surrounded by the mountains and some very interesting holes. again, could have been better maintained - they clearly had a mole problem as lots of piles of mud everywhere!
