Prestbury Golf Club

Prestbury Golf Club is one of those places that serious golfers rate highly for good reason. Just 15 miles south of Manchester, this Harry Colt design packs Top 100 pedigree, excellent year-round playability and a warm members' club welcome into a layout that works brilliantly for societies, travelling groups and golfers building a north-west itinerary.

Founded in 1920 on free-draining sandy ground, Prestbury has long been known for its conditioning and strategic quality. It is a course that rewards smart golf rather than just power, with rolling terrain, fast greens and a routing that keeps you thinking from the 1st tee to the last putt. The sandy subsoil Colt identified as an asset back in 1920 remains one of the course's great practical strengths, keeping it open and playable when neighbouring clubs are pulling up the welcome mat.

Golf World and National Club Golfer have both ranked Prestbury in England's Top 100. European Tour player David Horsey visited in 2016 and described it as "virtually tour standard." Rob Smith of Golf Monthly called it "an excellent course with that perfect mix of challenge and physical beauty." Add in standout food, first-class practice facilities and easy access from Manchester Airport, and Prestbury becomes a very strong option for a day visit or as part of a wider Cheshire golf break.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want to play a genuinely great course with serious pedigree, without the corporate resort atmosphere. It suits societies, visiting groups and individual visitors who appreciate proper golf in a proper club setting.

Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers will get the most from the strategic depth of the Colt layout, but multiple tee options from Championship down to Orange mean players of all abilities can find a fair and enjoyable test. If you care about course condition, history and a clubhouse that actually delivers on food, Prestbury belongs on your itinerary.

Prestbury Golf Course

Playing Prestbury for the first time, the thing that strikes you most is how cleverly Colt used such a compact piece of land. The course occupies roughly 90 acres, which is modest by any measure, yet there is no sense of repetition or crowding as you move through the round. Each hole has its own character, its own sight lines, its own demand.

The terrain is hilly, and the elevation changes are a constant presence throughout. From the first tee, a par-five that drops away invitingly at 496 yards from the tips, the course sets its tone early: generous enough to reward a good drive, but with enough going on around the green to punish lazy thinking on the approach. The fairways have a liveliness underfoot that you associate more with links golf than inland parkland. In summer, well-struck tee shots chase on and the course plays with real pace.

The front nine winds through the lower reaches of the property before the back nine climbs to its highest point at the 10th tee, a short par-three at 143 yards that demands precision rather than power. From there the routing descends to the lowest point at the 12th green, then builds back up to the clubhouse with a sequence of holes that tighten the pressure as the round develops. The 9th, stroke index one at 448 yards from the championship tees, is the front nine's sternest examination. The 13th, a long par-four at 433 yards, is one of the toughest holes on the back nine and a good example of how Prestbury asks for control as much as length.

The greens are the feature visitors mention most consistently. Fast, contoured and carefully maintained, they require confident putting and careful reading. Mackenzie and Ebert, appointed as course architects in 2016, have overseen a bunker refurbishment that has been widely praised. The bunkering now looks and plays exactly as Colt would have intended, positioned to catch the imprecise rather than the merely unlucky.
