Sheringham Golf Club sits on the Norfolk coast, about 25 miles north of Norwich. It's a proper links perched on the cliff-tops above the town's western edge. Tom Dunn laid out the original nine holes in 1891, with the course extended to a full eighteen by 1898.

Sir Henry Cotton called Sheringham "one of the best kept secrets in golf" and you can see why. The routing hugs the cliffs in places and threads through gorse-lined fairways, with sea views popping up as you go. Expect firm, running turf and a breeze that rarely takes a day off, so it's very much a thinking golfer's round. If you enjoy flighting the ball, shaping shots and taking your medicine when the wind turns, you'll have a lot of fun here.

Off the course, the clubhouse is relaxed and welcoming, ideal for a post-round pint without any fuss. It's an easy place to linger, with plenty of space and cracking coastal views from the terrace.

It also fits neatly into a Norfolk itinerary. Combine it with Royal Cromer, Royal Norwich, Hunstanton Golf Club and Royal West Norfolk and you've got a cracking mix of coastal tests within easy reach. If you're planning a golf tour in Norfolk, Sheringham is a brilliant "hidden gem" day.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want traditional links golf without the stiffness. Great for couples, mates' trips and societies building a golf tour in Norfolk.

Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy firm conditions, wind and using their heads. Mid-handicappers upwards will enjoy it too, but bring your bump-and-run and accept you won't hit the same shot twice.

Sheringham Golf Club

Sheringham Golf Club is wedged between the cliffs and the preserved North Norfolk Railway Line, and is a golfing institution where little has changed over the past century.

The 6,558 yard layout has a demanding par of 70 and is known particularly for the ferocity of its par 4s. These holes are the key to manufacturing a good score, but with the wind invariably blowing hard, that is easier said than done.

The holes that run adjacent to the cliff edge are the most scenic at Sheringham with the North Sea waiting to catch any wayward shot. The attractive 6th hole's elevated tee provides glorious views but the ever changing sea breezes can mean clubs ranging from a mid-iron to driver are required to find the putting surface.

As well as the tricky bunkering and abundant gorse you are confronted with yet another hazard on the closing stretch of holes, the "Poppy Line" steam railway. A puffing steam train could be a distraction when trying to tee off but they are also rather picturesque.

The clubhouse at Sheringham dates back to 1912, giving off a sense of historical charm with photographs and other historical artefacts lining the walls. The 19th Hole Lounge Bar and dining room serves a varied selection of local, regional and national beverages as well as a range of food to satisfy any hungry golfer. The menu ranges from bar snacks such as homemade sausage rolls, seasonal vegetables, locally reared meats and poultry to freshly caught dishes of crabs and lobster.

This welcoming club is arguably one of the most satisfying and endearing options that can be included in a golf tour along the rugged Norfolk coastline.

Not worth the money they seem to charge. Hard to get a smile or conversation out of the guy in pro shop and facilities generally poor. When paying £140+ for a round of golf I’d expect the experience from start to finish to be much stronger. Course is lovely, some really great holes and enjoyable but really hard to justify the green fee they are charging when Cromer is 15 minutes down the road at £100!

Sherrinham was fabulous, our group agreed it was the best links course we have played in terms of the prettiness of the course, the variation of the holes, the setting between sea and steam train line, just terrific. Course was in really good condition given how dry it’s been. Clubhouse was pleasant with a very traditional feel. Staff were helpful and beer was good. We did not sample food.

Great course, friendly staff amazing views. We were there on a day when there was not much wind. I expect it would be much more challenging on a day when the weather was less kind.
