When I look back on my career, the memories that stand out most vividly aren’t always the trophies or the individual performances.
They’re the moments where golf became something bigger than myself – where I was part of a team, fighting for something collective. For me, that’s what makes the Solheim Cup so special. I played in nine Solheims and captained the team twice and I can tell you there’s nothing else in golf that compares.
The passion, the noise, the sense of responsibility. It’s unique.
When you hear the roars echoing across the course, you know something big has happened, even if you don’t know what yet. The energy of the crowd pushes you to focus harder, play braver, and give more than you thought you had.
It’s electric. And the best part?
You don’t have to be a professional to experience team golf.
Whenever I meet golf groups on my travels, I love hearing how they’ve created their own Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup. They split into teams, print team shirts, and play formats like foursomes or fourballs.
The pride and bragging rights mean just as much as they do at professional level! I’ve always believed team golf brings out the best in us.
In foursomes, you’re literally playing every other shot with your partner. You have to trust each other, laugh at the mistakes, and celebrate the good ones together. In fourball, you learn to back each other up – one player attacks, the other plays safe. Suddenly golf becomes about strategy, communication, and friendship.
And golf is one of the few sports where you can share those moments across generations and abilities.

I’ve played golf with my grandmother and laughed the whole way round, and I’ve had fierce matches against my brother where neither of us wanted to give an inch. That’s the magic of the game: it connects us, no matter our age, gender, or handicap.

One of the things I love most about golf is how it brings people together. Whether it’s the Solheim Cup, the Ryder Cup, or a group of friends heading away for their annual trip, the spirit is the same – team golf creates memories you’ll never forget.
If you and your friends are planning your own Ryder Cup or Solheim-style trip, Your Golf Travel’s September History Makers promotion is the perfect way to do it.
Not only will you get the chance to play on courses steeped in history, but you’ll also unlock up to £750 in savings for your group.
So gather your teammates, design those team shirts, and make your next golf holiday one to remember. Who knows, you might just write your own piece of golfing history.
