Founded in 1894, Ashburnham is one of the oldest and most revered courses in Wales. It's members golf, with a history that includes Welsh PGA events and some big-name winners, Bernard Gallacher and Sam Torrance among them. The course has a traditional setup, where the golf does the talking and you're not paying for resort frills you don't need.
It's more about placement than pounding driver. Miss your line and you'll often be chipping out or negotiating well-placed bunkers, and the greens have enough movement to make lag putting a skill. If you like working the ball and hitting the right side of the fairway, you'll enjoy it here. The routing makes clever use of the natural terrain to create variety across all eighteen, and it's the kind of course that reveals a bit more each time you play it.
The clubhouse has the traditional feel you'd hope for, and visitors are looked after without any fuss. There's a decent pro shop for essentials, practice facilities for a warm-up and a comfortable bar for the post-round debrief. Nothing flashy, just solid hospitality that suits the setting.
Who is this for?
Golfers who want a classic Welsh members' club day, with history baked in and a course that asks you to think your way round. Great for a society stop or a low-key weekend where the golf is the headline.
Who is it best for?
Players who prefer plotting and position over power, particularly mid-handicappers and better. Also ideal if you're building a South Wales itinerary and want something with genuine pedigree beyond the obvious resort names.

In 1902, the original nine holes were extended, and architectural contributors include J.H. Taylor, James Braid and Ken Cotton. Hazards at Ashburnham include treacherous out of bounds, steep changes in elevation and deep pot bunkers. Add to this the tall fescue that adorns the course's sand dunes, and all the components for a magnificent links course are in place.
Though not particularly long, Ashburnham is tricky and requires great control to achieve good scoring. A perennial favourite in Wales, Ashburnham is certainly worth a stop during a golf tour of the south coast.

The course was interesting and has a sense of history. A number of good but slightly quirky holes. Staff member in the Pro Shop was good.

First nine holes out against the wind are difficult, with the return back to the clubhouse mostly down wind, making them friendlier. Super layout and good condition.

Ashburnham is a typical like course 9 out 9 back. After the rain we have been having the course was in good condition and the green were exceptional. A traditional clubhouse that unfortunately for us doesn't supply food on a Monday. This required us to jump in the car and go to the local shop for sustenance. A good club and will return.
