Bundoran Golf Club sits on a dramatic cliff-top headland jutting into Donegal Bay, just five minutes' walk from the town centre and right on the Wild Atlantic Way. Established in 1894, it's a par 70 links with firm, fast greens where good decisions matter as much as good swings.
The setting is the headline. You'll play with panoramic views over the bay and the Dartry Mountains behind you. On calmer days you can watch surfers working the breaks below, spot seals on the rocks and see walkers tackling the famous Roguey Walk as it runs alongside the course. When the wind gets up, which it often does out here, the course shows its teeth and you'll earn every par with smart club selection and a bit of creativity.
The layout makes the most of the natural movement of the land, with holes that ask you to shape shots, flight the ball down and use the ground. Keep an eye out for gorse and rough that punish anything drifting offline, and don't be surprised if putts break more than you first read on these quick surfaces. Harry Vardon is credited with the design and you feel his philosophy of giving pleasure to golfers of all abilities in the variety of holes and the playable, running links turf.
If you're after a proper Donegal links experience without needing transfers or long drives, Bundoran is an easy win for a golf break based in a lively seaside town. Fancy ticking off another Wild Atlantic Way links? Include Bundoran on your next Donegal golf break.

Vardon's routing makes smart use of a narrow strip of linksland, and the key here is positioning. You don't need to hit driver everywhere, but you do need to pick the right side of the fairway to open up approaches into small, firm greens. When it's calm you'll fancy a few chances. Once the breeze turns, keeping the ball down becomes the skill that saves shots.
A good tip is to treat it like a proper links day out: take one more club, swing within yourself and aim for safer targets. Misses can run away quickly on tight turf, and if you short-side yourself you'll be playing delicate chips from firm lies with the wind in your face. The greens are true and quick, typical of proper links turf, and they're small enough that approach play matters more than driving distance.
Several holes run right along the cliff edge, with the Roguey Walk below and surfers visible in the breaks when the swell's up. The views are stunning, the Dartry Mountains form a dramatic backdrop inland, and seals are a regular sight in the bay. I'll be honest, if there's a stiff breeze, it's one of those places where par feels like you've earned your dinner.
Logistics are simple. It's a five-minute walk from the centre of Bundoran, which makes it ideal for societies who want easy transfers and a lively base. If your group has mixed handicaps, it's also a nice change of pace on a Donegal itinerary, more about craft and control than brute length.
If you want classic links golf in a spectacular spot, without the bucket-list price point, Bundoran is well worth including on a north-west loop.
